About

After forming in 1961 in Chicago, Illinois, while in high school, Styx steadily toured and expanded from a three-piece to a quintet during the 60s, signing with local record label Wooden Nickel Records in 1972, and releasing their self-titled debut that year. 1973’s Styx II and The Serpent Is Rising followed, as well as 1974’s Man of Miracles, further refining their output as they transitioned from straight-forward rock n roll into a more progressive rock, incorporating psychedelic flourishes and experimental structuring, as well as hard rock guitars, powerful ballads and theatrical elements. They signed with A&M Records, releasing Equinox in 1975, and subsequently 1976’s Crystal Ball and 1977’s The Grand Illusion, their breakout album that sold over 3 million copies propelled by singles Come Sail Away and Fooling Yourself. In 1981, Styx released Paradise Theatre, a concept album chronicling the fictional rise and fall of the Chicago theatre, which became their fourth consecutive triple-platinum album, reached #1 on the Billboard charts, and spawned five singles, including top ten hits The Best of Times and Too Much Time on My Hands. Next was 1983’s full-fledged rock opera Kilroy Was Here, which featured synthesizer and vocoder-driven Mr. Roboto and the power ballad Don’t Let It End. Following a half-decade separation in the 80s and a brief break-up in the 90s, Styx’s 1996 tour Return to Paradise was a success, and since then have continued releasing albums and satisfying ticket holders at concerts around the world with the likes of Def Leppard, Foreigner and Boston. Over the course of their career, Styx has played many famous venues, like Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion and Madison Square Garden.

by Amazing concert on 3/16/24Hard Rock Live Sacramento - Wheatland

Styx never disappoints. We saw them at Thunder Valley last year too. The venue at Thunder Valley is much better but Styx slayed the concert. They still sound great!!!!

    Evening with Styx???

by dave on 3/4/24Hard Rock Live Sacramento - Wheatland

Concert was billed as "An Evening with Styx" turned out to be just a regular Styx show 15 or 16 songs played. In the past, when I've gone to "An Evening with Styx"concery, they played for 2.5 hours and around 22 or 23 songs with a brief intermission. I would think this was a mistake on the promoters and not the band. great show, though too short.

We’ve attended several Styx concerts. The entire group is always on point at every show we’ve seen. They are true experts at their craft! We’re so glad they are still out there entertaining.

    1st time seeing Styx

by Byrd on 3/2/24Hard Rock Live Sacramento - Wheatland

Some concerts just make you smile the whole time and chair dance. Or just dance. They did all the hits that I wanted to hear and then some. Did not disappoint. Will go see them again.

    Surprisingly Top-Shelf

by Jagle on 3/2/24Hard Rock Live Sacramento - Wheatland

I listened to Styx when much younger, and enjoyed the music but I wasn't over-expecting when we arrived at the show. The band was surprisingly entertaining when seen live. They played their hits, and I was amazed how many there were. Some newer band members added to the mix, and Tommy Shaw was, is, and forever will be a classy and personable musician. If there was to be any negative critique at all, it would be that many of the songs sound similar, but that's the case with many rock bands. All in all, when of the better shows we've seen over the last few years, and we go to a lot of live events.

    Styx show

by Richard on 3/2/24Hard Rock Live Sacramento - Wheatland

First rock concert at the Hard Rock @ Wheatland. Couple comedians and a medium shows prior; wasn’t sure how the band would sound. Certainly we’re not disappointed with quality of the whole venue. Seats, sound, lighting and fellow guests. The band sounded so good. Like studio recordings with enhanced vocals and extended instrument solos. Better than I remember the original album recordings. Sat on left edge of theater, in the riser seating (below the mezzanine) with long time friend. A Tuesday night at the Hard Rock. They put on quite a wonderful performance. My friend knew both the gentleman seated next to us. Small world sometimes. Looking forward to next opportunity to see someone special here again. And again big thanks to Styx for a memorable night.

by Metalhippie on 3/1/24Hard Rock Live Sacramento - Wheatland

From the start they rocked the house to the very end! Very vibrant energy! Voices still pristine! Engaged with the audience. I had the best time. In my top three concerts and I’ve been going to concerts since 1985!
