John Prine on Tour
John Prine has been regarded as one of America's foremost musical storytellers since the 1970s. Although his reputation looms large, when he strolls unassumingly onto a stage, his vibe is more like an amiable next-door neighbor just hopping the fence to commandeer a corner of your porch, ready with an anecdote. So even though Prine classics like "Angel From Montgomery," "Sam Stone" and "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" have been beloved by generations of fans and covered countless times by everybody from Bonnie Raitt to The Lemonheads, Prine delivers them in concert with a disarmingly casual air, as though these masterworks of Americana were no big deal. Of course when they hit you, there's no denying just how big a deal his idiosyncratic but accessible tunes are.
John Prine in Concert
At the start of the 1970s, when the singer/songwriter boom was at its strongest, it was no less esteemed a talent than Kris Kristofferson who spotted the unusual gift of a young Midwestern troubadour named John Prine and helped him land his first record deal. Prine's self-titled 1971 debut LP remains an American classic, combining complex notions with catchy country/folk melodies and a naturalistic but poetic approach to lyric writing. Many of its songs, like "Illegal Smile," "Hello in There," "Sam Stone" and "Angel from Montgomery" became part of the singer/songwriter canon, and were covered for decades. Over the years, Prine sometimes dipped more into rock 'n' roll or veered further into country, but he never lost the core of his genius. In later days, his releases have been more sporadic, but he's never quit bringing his tunes to the people. Even after enduring some serious health issues, he emerged on top and continues touring and recording throughout the 2010s with as much elan as ever.

I have been listening to John Prine since I was a boy (my older cousins kept illegal smiles), and after all these years (near half a century), he seems like an old friend. I wish that he would come to Asheville more often, but I am not against seeing him at Red Rocks, again. John Prine still puts on as good a show as any I have seen, and all I can do is look forward. Until then, know that I love and miss you.
Attending this event was my birthday present to my husband. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to match or exceed it in the future! The music was wonderful, the venue acoustics were great and John’s stories were charming. He truly looked like he was having the time of his life. I highly recommend catching a show on this tour if possible.
A wonderful performance by JP. His talent has not been wasted. I hope to see him perform again.
Great concert!! Super energy! Great band and he did solo acoustic set too
Enjoyed seeing and hearing him at the Thomas Wolf Auditorium.
The show was fantastic. John Prine engaged the crowd playing new material as well as old favorites. He is a great performer and his backup band was amazing.
Prine was excellent. He’s a great storyteller through his songs. The venue was not good. Uncomfortable seats and the crowd was disrespectful to others in the audience. Lots of loud talking during the performance, plus lots and lots of phone usage. The bright screens in a dark venue are really annoying.
Best concert I have seen from a living legend in the music field. The wide range of ages and styles in the audience attest to the fact that Prine has lasting appeal and has been discovered by young people also! His band all well seasoned and spot on! Center needs to work with ushers and the annoying flashlights a little more though.
Have been a JP fan since the 1970s. Shows are always the BEST!
John was great as usual. Accustics at the Thomas Wolfe auditorium are terrible. Place should be torn down.
While john's voice is a little fading and he doesn't have the range of 30 years ago, the concert was the most complete and polished I ever saw. He has a great band and did every song I wanted to hear. On top of the venue at the Fox was terrific.
Excellent venue and concert diffently worth seeing
Overall a fine show, but opening act needed more mid-range and less high end frequency response, a bit shrill. John's voice was overpowered often by the electric guitar. Even affected by age, we wanted to hear him clearly for his poetry. Was great when he soloed, missed half his words when the band played. My first time at the Fox, loved the venue, but missed a better vocal mix.
We loved this concert! The joy of watching these musicians play cannot be captured in words. The admiration they have for each other is evident and makes the audience react in kind.
My hubby is a fan and I didn’t know quite what to expect, and I can tell you I had a great time. John Prine is an spectacular show man! He is talented and funny and I found myself singing out loud to songs I had never heard before! I did not want the evening to end. The Fox Theatre did a great job too. It was such an easy venue to be at, good security but no lines to speak of anywhere. Bars everywhere, and we sat in the pit, where the view was fabulous and the seats super comfy. Oakland is really a beautiful city with amazing architecture. They do have a number of homeless in the area and we encountered a few with obvious mental illness. That was sad. We walked from the new Hampton Inn. It was a quick walk with literally dozens of taverns and eateries on the way. There is a young and very easy going hip vibe in the area. My suggestion, do it! And be kind.
Totally impressed with the performance. Amanda Shires was fantastic. John Prine is a true entertainer in every respect. He has total respect for all his musicians. His new material is very impressive, even though I grew up and love his older music. Great choice of songs. He appeared to totally enjoy performing for us, as well as performing in general. I would go see the concert again.!!!!!!!!!
I've seen John Prine a few times and he has consistently provided delightful entertainment. Even though this tour was supporting his new album, he did not stay stuck on promoting it by playing every tune. He mixed it up by playing some old sing along classics, seamlessly weaved between tracks from the new record. My favorite song of the night was 'Hello in There.' This was the first time seeing him perform live with new band member Fats Kaplan, who in my opinion, brought new life to many of the songs with some tasteful pedal steel guitar playing and even tastier mandolin work. I always wondered why John hasn't had a jack-of-all-trades virtuoso musician in his band and it was a pleasure to finally see it happening. The highlight of the entire evening for me was watching John smiling and having fun. He seemed a lot looser to me than he has in the past and appeared as though he was simply enjoying making music with a great band. I've never heard of Amanda Shires, the opening act, but she was awesome. She had a witty sense of humor and played that fiddle with raw emotion. It was nice to see her getting a rise out of John during the last few songs. I think she made him blush even. Overall, a wonderful evening spent listening to some of the finest American music around.
John Prine's return to The Landmark Theatre in Syracuse was not a night to be missed. It was a must for Prine fans. He gave his all, singing both old and new songs crafted by one of the most talented and unique songwriters our country has ever produced. The Syracuse fans could not get enough of Prine. And our love, in the form of applause that wouldn't quit, was all repaid when he danced for us at the end of the Lake Marie performance. A Joyful night. Can't wait for him to return.
I started listening to John when I was 13 thats 50 yrs worth and still he keeps rocking it, keep goin John Buffalo,NY loves you .Always welcome in the big B
