About

ELVIS COSTELLO IN CONCERT:

He may be the "other Elvis," but when it comes to clever, madcap,  personality-drenched rock and roll, there is only one Elvis Costello. From his days in the British punk and new wave scene to his pioneering role in the rise of power pop, Costello has repeatedly broken the mold, appealing to both cult and mainstream audiences. On tour as a one-man-band in  2013, he displayed serious performance chops, making a backing band seem obsolete with beautifully stripped-down versions of classics like "Allison" and "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding." Hitting the road again in 2014, Costello will be treating fans to his acclaimed solo show as well as select dates with his band the Imposters.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

London-born Declan Patrick MacManus, better known as Elvis Costello, began playing music at an early age under the influence of his father, a talented musician and bandleader. After playing in a pub rock band in his early twenties, he released his solo debut album My Aim is True in 1977 to moderate success, landing in the Top 20 in the UK and Top 40 in the US. Shortly after forming his backing band the Attractions, Costello  released his breakthrough 1979 album Armed Forces, a No. 2 hit in the UK and an enduring new wave classic. In addition to his knack for catchy, clever songwriting, Costello's provocative performances, pointed political lyrics, and anti-authority attitude helped fuel his success. With more than 30 studio albums under his belt, Costello's impressive run continues with another highly anticipated tour in 2014.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Simply an amazing show. So many great songs, and the man just doesn't stop! A great experience!"

"It's amazing that all of the talent on display was coming from one man. He played for nearly two and a half hours and not a second was wasted. Performers like him are a rarity."

"Quirky, eclectic and utterly entertaining. Elvis' voice is as distinctive as ever, and while he played many of his classics, the set list included many songs that were throwbacks to his father's time. I have a whole new appreciation for the man's guitar talents."

    Costello has still got it!

by Jefisbored on 6/8/17Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

First thing I loved is that the show started right on time. Greatly appreciated on a work night! Elvis Costello sounds as good live 25 years later as he did on the original Imperial Bedroom album. They played for a solid 2.5 hours straight and never missed a note. He still sings with the passion he had in his prime and you can feel the energy throughout the hall. The pianist was also amazing, sometimes having to run from the grand piano to the keyboard bank and back during one song. Elvis played at least 6 different guitars, as well as taking a turn on the piano. Back up singers were beautiful with giant voices. It all came together to form a perfect evening.

    Sound mix was terrible.....

by Coronadofan on 6/8/17Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

The sound mix for this show was terrible. I have been to hundreds of concerts and this was one of the worst mixes. I could hear the piano and the drums over everything else. I wouldn't be able to tell you what the backup singers sounded like - I could never hear them until the encore when only Elvis with a guitar and the singers were there. Very disappointing concert..........could have been great but the mix spoiled it.

    Elvis Costello was Disappointing

by MusicLover1010101 on 6/8/17Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

Wow. Where do I start? 1) The sound system was awful. The engineer pushed it too far and it led to a distorted muffled sound that made it difficult to recognize the lyrics. 2) I understand that the concert was billed as a tribute to the Imperial Bedroom album. I get it. But why leave out such great songs such as Pump It Up, Veronica, Red Shoes, Peace Love & Understanding, Radio Radio, ... I wish I could get my time and money back. What a waste!

Technically, the worst concert I ever attended

by Emeee on 6/8/17Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

The sound crew was completely out to lunch! The bass drum was so high that it cancelled out the other instruments. The guitar tech for Elvis, was MIA when Elvis' guitar wasn't working. Took forever, and Elvis kept on signaling for another guitar, finally some sound came out of his guitar just at the same time the guitar tech finally came out and Elvis shooed him off. Basically, the sound sucked! Just one big mush!!!

    Where were the hits?

by Jenboronio on 6/8/17Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

I saw EC in Cleveland OH 30 years ago , one of the top shows of my life . Monday however ; did not live up to my expectations. Sound was poor , I was in the balcony and couldn't hear him speak and the sound just wasn't good . I did not recognize 95% of the song selections. I'd say about 20% of the patrons left well before the end some at first intermission.

    Aweful sound at Symphony Hall!

by DaveZZ on 6/8/17Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

The sound was so bad we left early. Everything was overpowered by drums and base. Very difficult to hear Costello's vocals and guitar. The keyboards were hard to hear too. Really disappointing. Expensive tickets, great venue (or so I thought), terrible sound. Elvis Costello should fire whoever mixed this live show.

I barely knew ANY of the songs

by LegalEagle65 on 6/8/17Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

He played maybe two songs that I knew throughout the concert and saved five good ones for the encore. By then I was bored to tears and ready to leave. If he interspersed more familiar songs with the unfamiliar, newer stuff, he would have held our attention much better. A lot of people got up and walked out. It was too bad because he sounds great.

    A bit disappointed

by SDChapinFan on 6/8/17Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

My problem is I was not familiar with Costello's music and I had a difficult time understanding his lyrics because of the way he sings and the volume of the music.

    Elvis Costello

by Jaybsie on 6/8/17Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

We left after almost an hour of the concert, the sound was horrible. The band was so loud you couldn't hear the singing or melody of the music.mabybothers left before us. So disappointing.

    Classic Elvis

by Abbott123 on 6/5/17Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - Woodinville

Elvis Costello is an amazing performer well into his late career. His vintage band, full of Attractions and two amazing backup singers, looked as if they should be playing Live Aid. Elvis' vocals and rock'n roll guitar-playing continue to be tremendous. He definitely still has the fire. Plus, this was one of the most eclectic setlists I've seen him play and that includes the tour where he just spun a wheel of his songs and played whatever came up. Brilliant.

    No energy what so ever.

by tdellay on 6/4/17Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - Woodinville

I love Elvis and can't tell you how much I was looking forward to this concert. I love going to the Chateau for concerts and was so happy when I heard he was coming. There was no energy to this show at all. This was one of the worst concerts I've ever been to. He played maybe four of his hits and it was like he doesn't enjoy playing them anymore. He changed them so much it was like hearing a new song. People were walking out all night and less than half stayed to hear the on chore. Don't waste your time or money on the show. Man, I am so bummed out about this show

    Mellow Fellow

by Fedmedtech on 6/4/17Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - Woodinville

Attendance was my hubby's idea, as he is more of a fan than I. I found the concert to be very mellow-perfect for relaxing and drinking wine. I only recognized about three songs, but tapped my toes to a few others I didn't.

Elvis has been a big part of my life for years from blasting it on fishing boats while pitching crab in the 70s to painting my first apartment 80s to crazy nights in LA 90s to rocking my babies to sleep.....to NOW. Elvis always delivers, his concert was amazing he still has IT and i will never forget....one of my best concerts ever!

    Low energy

by Lalo1963 on 6/4/17Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - Woodinville

He took too long to play his famous songs. Did not seem connected to audience.

Elvis has obviously left the building

by Schweener on 6/4/17Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - Woodinville

Elvis finally showed up- 30 minutes late-sang without much passion, but managed to leave the stage early. We clocked him at about 1 hour for his performance. We were tired of his antics and left. He did come back for an good encore which we heard as we drove away. It is starting to look like this concert series doesn't care much about quality.

    Elvis lives

by RlPcity on 10/26/16Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Elvis Costello visited Nashville and played a wide repertoire from his long career. A giant 50s looking television played videos of Elvis' earlier hits. Then following the opening act, Elvis came out and played solo and acoustic versions of his work, mostly newer things. He was joined by the opening act, Larkin Poe, for a few songs and then brought out the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for the final six songs. I enjoyed the show, but would much prefer to see Elvis with the Attractions or the Impostors. He butchered "Everyday I write the Book."

Worst Waste of $$$ in Ages

by norepeat on 10/26/16Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

The opening act was totally forgettable! I only hope I can!! Elvis mumbled, told unfunny jokes, and was overall a total waste of my time and $$$!!

    Elvis Costello at the Ryman

by Anonymous on 10/25/16Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

A mostly solo set, with EC switching between guitar and piano, let his songwriting skill shine! He finished off the show joined by Preservation Hall Jazz group (!) and Larkin Poe. Magical evening!

One of the best Elvis Costello shows I've seen!

by Lizziebuck on 10/25/16Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

I've seen Elvis Costello around 20 times, beginning in 1982, and this was one of the top three shows I've seen him do. He always does something different — but this tour was truly brilliant.

    Best Elvis Concert

by membry on 10/21/16Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

Elvis is extremely entertaining. His banter is quite amusing, and he can be quite enlightening. This is one of his best, because, it is the most intimate concert. Not encumbered by additional musicians, he plays the more ballad-like songs that I enjoy most of his repertoire. He played a lot of the new songs he's writing for a new production/play/musical. I'm looking forward to see/hear it in the future.
