About Delaware Blue Coats/87ers

The history of NBA G League (formerly known as the NBA Development League) teams are always fun exercises in great nicknames and confusing timelines. The Delaware Blue Coats are no different.

The team started life in 2007 as an affiliate of the Utah Jazz known as the Utah Flash, playing their games at the UCCU Center (previously the McKay Events Center) in Orem, Utah. The name was chosen in a fan contest. The first real star in the team's history was Morris Almond, the former Rice University swingman drafted by the Jazz in 2007. Almond broke scoring records — including the single-game points record twice — and led the G League in points per game.

In 2013, the Flash were acquired by the Philadelphia 76ers and moved to Delaware, where they became the Delaware 87ers, honoring Delaware's role as the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States in 1787. Continuing the team's tradition of setting single-game scoring records, Jordan McRae scored a whopping 61 points to grab the record in January of 2016.

As of 2018, the team has a new name and a new home. The Delaware Blue Coats left their usual arena at the University of Delaware campus and arrived at the brand-new 76ers Fieldhouse in Wilmington, which was built expressly for the Blue Coats.

The rebranding is part of getting fans in the area excited about the team, and the 76ers have been one of the most active teams in the NBA in utilizing its G League affiliate. Will the Blue Coats have more success than the 87ers? Only time will tell, but as the NBA as a whole starts taking the G League more seriously, the level of play will only increase.

    What fun!

by Mimi on 2/28/24Chase Fieldhouse - Wilmington

This was my first Blue Coats game and I will certainly be back. I brought my 2 and 4 year old grandchildren along with the family to Coaty’s birthday game. It was perfect for the young kids. Plenty of activity to keep them occupied. We all really enjoyed the game as well. Only 1 negative- there were no parking spaces available due to all the other practices and training using the facility. Had to park outside the facility grounds.

    Overall, it was worth it!

by Flash on 2/1/24Chase Fieldhouse - Wilmington

It was nice, a fun-filled evening. I would return. There were a few improvement opportunities such as initially experiencing difficulties with my ticket. It came up in my phone but the attendants could not read it for some reason. After being directed to customer service, the problem was corrected in little time. However, the band's music was so loud, we could barely hear each other to navigate through the difficulties. Kudos to the initial attendant who left her post to ensure the problem was solved! Yep, I'll be back! :)

    Last Saturday’s game

by Bud on 3/28/23Chase Fieldhouse - Wilmington

I brought 3 teenage grandchildren for a night out. The game environment was a real family themed night out. I was amazed how happy all of the children around us were. Thanks for a reasonably priced night out.

Catered food quality has gone downhill

by James on 3/27/23Chase Fieldhouse - Wilmington

Had courtside seats and the food upstairs was not good. It use to be much better. Not sure if they changed caterers but please make the food upstairs better.

Great experience, makes me want to keep coming back

    by CW on 3/2/23

I went to the Blue Coats for the first time a couple weeks ago. I was floored about how amazing the experience was. It was super relaxing, comfortable, and upbeat. I have gone several times since, with a romantic partner once and it was romantic. Coaty the mascot is super nice, and upbeat. Its really a relaxing time where you can forget everything in life. The parking is free, concessions are reasonable. Basketball players are extremely respectful and there is no profanity from anyone including fans. Its just a very comfortable place to be, that feels very safe. It has law enforcement here too to make sure everything goes well. The Delaware Police dont mess around. The cool part is you are very close to the action. And top it all off, that you have McClung. This guy is so humble and so incredible, He wants to take no light from his teammates and tries to build them up. At his expense because he passes the ball a lot when he can go ape on the other team. At some point for him to advance to the level he will, he will have to just go ape every time he can and not worry about his teammates light and growth. The music is absolutely hot and so sick. They send tee shirts to the fans and have interactive games at every break no matter how little the break. The game goes so quick, but its about 2-2.5 hours. I have been here 3x when I thought I would only go once. I am waiting and watching for that incredible McClung dunk that is coming. There are only a couple games left. I am going to go to all of them if I can. The most incredible entertainment. The last game is sold out as is several others. My recommendation is get your tickets while they are available. Its more memorable by far than any Sixers game and to see McClung at this stage would and could be like watching Iverson in G-League before he went up. You'll never forget it and can watch him very closely. This may be the last couple games this year that you can watch him at G-League. Im not going to miss it. worth every penny. Will also bring who I can to these games because whomever has not gone has been missing out. The hot dogs are bangin, incredible quality. They have other small freebies here too for fans you never know what they will have with the exhibitors that have different promotions at every game. They also have a free balloon maker for kidz but it seems like the adults are having even more fun. Incredible, you got to go!
