About Delaware Blue Coats/87ers
The history of NBA G League (formerly known as the NBA Development League) teams are always fun exercises in great nicknames and confusing timelines. The Delaware Blue Coats are no different.
The team started life in 2007 as an affiliate of the Utah Jazz known as the Utah Flash, playing their games at the UCCU Center (previously the McKay Events Center) in Orem, Utah. The name was chosen in a fan contest. The first real star in the team's history was Morris Almond, the former Rice University swingman drafted by the Jazz in 2007. Almond broke scoring records — including the single-game points record twice — and led the G League in points per game.
In 2013, the Flash were acquired by the Philadelphia 76ers and moved to Delaware, where they became the Delaware 87ers, honoring Delaware's role as the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States in 1787. Continuing the team's tradition of setting single-game scoring records, Jordan McRae scored a whopping 61 points to grab the record in January of 2016.
As of 2018, the team has a new name and a new home. The Delaware Blue Coats left their usual arena at the University of Delaware campus and arrived at the brand-new 76ers Fieldhouse in Wilmington, which was built expressly for the Blue Coats.
The rebranding is part of getting fans in the area excited about the team, and the 76ers have been one of the most active teams in the NBA in utilizing its G League affiliate. Will the Blue Coats have more success than the 87ers? Only time will tell, but as the NBA as a whole starts taking the G League more seriously, the level of play will only increase.
What a fun day for our family! We hadn't even been before but are planning on coming back. My sons loved it.
My. Family. Enjoy. The. Game. And. The. Entertainment. During. Breaks. Of. The. Game
We are not necessarily fans; we were just visiting the area and thought it might be fun to watch a game. The team did not disappoint. All the players worked well together, were respectful of one another and the officials, and displayed athleticism in a humble manner. The facility is huge and easily accessed. The setup and seats were comfortable, and the atmosphere was family-friendly with no excessive yelling or profanity and bounce houses for kids who are restless. The concession area is small but ample and the prices are reasonable. We saw hot dogs for $1--not sure if that was a special or the usual price. If they were closer to us, we'd enjoy going regularly.
It was fun for the kids. The venue does a nice job at creating value for the fans.
Good Seats. Enjoyed the game even though Bluecoats lost. Great play on both teams! These games are definitely worth going to. Ticket process was easy!
It was a great atmosphere and great experience for our first time coming to a game.
Had a great time! Game was awesome! Guys really got it in! Seats were great! Couldn’t beat the price $12. My son and daughter both enjoyed the game! Parking was a little slow but fine. And free! Couldn’t ask for a better inexpensive night out with the kids considering everything so pricey nowadays!
We had a great time at the Blue Coat game! It was so family friendly. Neither of my kids caught t-shirts, so event people came through and made sure we had them. The seats were awesome. We can’t wait to go back!
Really enjoyed the Blue Coats game. The team really takes pains to make it a fun atmosphere, especially for the kids. Their mascot, Coaty the horse, has a lot of energy. The food prices were not outrageous and the employees at the venue were very helpful. Parking is free and the arena is easy to get to, just off I-495. Tickets were only $12 for the top row, which is still onl18-19 rows from the court. All things considered, a good time was had by all
Being a huge Sixers fan and from a family of 5 seasons ticket holders, I was eager to join my family to view their G-league team. Although the seats were awesome, it wasn’t enough to make me want to return again. We all left at halftime in order to return home and watch the Sixers edge out the Bucks in Milwaukee for the win.
My wife & I attended the game that was held at the Fieldhouse verse Ignite. This was a very nice experience. Very engaging & fun filled interaction with host of this event.
The venue and the game were awesome. It is great to watch pro players so close to the action and for such an affordable price. The people in my group were not so favorable on your public address announcer. He was condescending to the opponents and was providing some play by play commentary in an attempt to be funny. Although an enthusiastic and biased announcer is great , I would prefer he leaves out his comments "You can't do that", etc and also to be at least fair to the opponents. He was so bothersome that I would have preferred no commentary at all.
I enjoy watching basketball and I thought the music playing during the game was annoying. I would rather hear the sneakers squeaking and the game interaction. The music was loud and distracting.
This was such a great family fun night!!! Even our teenagers enjoyed it! The venue is small so you feel like you are part of the game. Players were very personable. The mascot, Caesar, got the audience excited and into the game! Would definitely recommend.
We had a wonderful time at the 87ers game. The only negative was my seat neighbor was far too large for her seat. She had to sit sideways and was half in my lap, and blocked a good portion of my view. It would be nice if there were some oversized seats available to accommodate such visitors, so that others are not inconvenienced.
