More than fifty years ago one musical changed theater forever. Now it's back, and mesmerizing audiences once again. From the first note to the final breath, West Side Story soars as the greatest love story of all time. Directed by David Saint, using Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents' Broadway direction, West Side Story remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway's finest and features such classics of the American musical theatre as "Something's Coming," "Tonight," "America," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere."
Story, music, dancing and talent was outstanding. Thoroughly enjoyed the performance!
This was a nice revival.....beautiful voices and dancing. The acting was just so, so. The singing was outstanding. Great tribute to the original score.
If a show is being billed as "Broadway In Chicago", then that is what I expect to see. Sadly, that was not the case at Sunday evening's performance at the Oriental Theatre. While I thought the dancing was quite good - the choreographer did a wonderful job recreating the original Jerome Robbins choreography, the singing and the acting left much to be desired. The young man playing Tony was having intonation problems, as well as vocal problems in general. The young lady playing Maria was good, though I was expecting more from her vocally. Some of the higher passages sounded thin and unsupported to my ears. The young lady playing Anita I thought was the strongest all-around performer: strong singing, powerful dancing, and invested acting. They lost me on "Dear Officer Krupke". The faux gay moment was cute, but inappropriate for the period; and the sexual vulgarity was unnecessary. The most disappointing part of the evening, however, was the lack of enunciation. You have to get the words out, especially if you are going to sing parts of it in Spanish, which I thought was a nice idea. Precious few of the words reached my seat - in Spanish or in English. Overall, I thought more was invested in the tender moments than in the tense moments. And it's the balance of these moments that make the show work. I was really looking forward to seeing West Side Story on stage, as I have only seen the film version. I found it interesting to see the changes and adjustments that were made to accommodate the film. However, the overall calibre of talent in this production I found to be lacking. While I am in favor of young talent having an avenue through which they may hone their craft, that avenue should be billed as such, and should be reflected in the ticket price.
West Side Story will never grow old. The music is timeless. The dancers reminded me of the original on Broadway; the dancers were amazing and the voices were better than Broadway!
I was very disappointed overall. Costumes were pretty bad; some not within period at all. I know sets are minimal, but I felt for the price I paid, I did not get my money's worth. I could have listened to a sound track for far less .
WSS was wonderful. Title description was one of my granddaughters' comments. It is as relevant now as when it originated. I took four of my grandchildren and they loved it and want to see it again. Will never compare to the original, but cast was wonderful. All of us thoroughly enjoyed it.
This national touring group was young, talented and energetic. Seeing one of my favorite musicals again did not disappoint.
First we had pretty good seats. The play was ok. The actors/ess didn't have a strong singing voice. The part played by Maria her voice was great and the young woman who sang by herself was very good. there were some innuendos with a sex orrientation that was really inappropriate!!!!! especially in a sunday afternoon performance. either way that was not in the original play!!!!!! i felt insulted and embarrassed!! uncalled for!!!
Everything about this production was awesome! The acting and vocals were excellent. The choreography was great! The orchestra sounded wonderful! I especially liked how both English and Spanish were used in both the dialogue and the song lyrics. Any fan of the movie was able to follow along. Many people around me were humming, or singing along. The gunshot was unexpectedly loud, but appropriate at the same time.It was a very well-put together production.
I thought the play was very good but at times I could not hear the actors not to mention there was too many lines not in English....I dont remember that being an issue in the original movie..But over all it was very good and brought back many memories
I do think that inserting Spanish language is a great idea, but not when Maria is being told that her brother was killed.... Not in many places that have plot implications as not everyone knows the show forwards and backwards. Overall it is a classic story and the music is fabulous, know the story before you go unless you are bilingual because important plot points are done in Spanish...
The production was great. Great sets, lighting was fantastic, and of course, the story timeless. The two main actors were very good. More so the Maria part than the Tony. I felt Tony could not hit the high notes but otherwise, I was satisfied with his abilities. Maria I thought was great! Long story short, it was time well spent.
Beautiful music and fabulous dancing. The voices were outstanding!
The first 9 acts before intermission seemed to pack a lot in and felt a little long. The 4-5 acts after intermission were great and kept your interest.
The ladies voices were lovely but the songs wete not enunciated well, so the words were hard to understand. The men were great dancers but all of their voices fell short. If they're headed for NYC, they can pack a small bag, because they will be coming back soon!!
Was pleased with the show. Enjoyed the dancing especially. Dancers were great!
I was extremely excited to see this musical, but ended up slightly disappointed. It was difficult to understand most of the female characters. I have seen the movie enough times to know what they songs/talks were about, but I would have liked to see characters that spoke and sang clearer. I also did not like the lack of enthusiasm and feeling from most of the characters. Overall, I enjoyed the experience, but did not love the cast.
Wonderfully done! This was a first class performance.
Poor singing. Couldn't hear the words or lyrics. Dancing was good, but overall a very mediocre production
My daughter and I completely enjoyed this production! The cast was wonderful and so talented! It was beautifully done!
