About

“A MAJOR MUSICAL. RICH, EPIC AND ENGROSSING. A CELEBRATION OF BROADWAY CRAFTSMANSHIP.” -The Washington Post

Two-time Tony Award-winning legends Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole join forces to portray the trailblazing cosmetic icons who built empires in a business world ruled by men.

From the creators of Grey Gardens and the director of Rent and Next to Normal, WAR PAINT tells the remarkable story of Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden—fierce rivals who defined 20th Century beauty. In creating an industry, they reinvented themselves and revolutionized how the world saw women.

    War Paint is Exceptional

by Jaymaysea on 10/7/17Nederlander Theatre - New York

Highly recommend the play. It was witty and thought provoking. I was however appalled there was no coat check at the theater. I had a small roller bag and I was told I could not bring it in and told I could take it to a garage on 46 Street to store it (the theater is on 41st). Lucky I am a quick thinker and took the bag to the hotel next door and checked it ( the person who suggested I take it to 46 street also told me the hotel would not take it -- good thing I did not listen). I refused to allow the negative venue experience to detract from the positive experience of the play.

No, no, no, no no....Don't Go.

    by Lolala12 on 10/6/17Nederlander - New York

Two great voices, but a very lackluster story and blah music. The songs had no tune, just singing sentences. The male actors are a amateur or are in a very poor role. Total disappointment, left at intermission. Seats are also very tight and uncomfortable. My knees were touching the next seat, I couldn't move and I was touching the older man next to me at the shoulders and leg areas. And, I am average size. Total awful waste of money.

    War Paint

by GrandmaTrish on 10/1/17Nederlander Theatre - New York

I recommend that you see these two great legends at their finest. Play was slow at first, but got better as it went one. Bottom line - you left with a good feeling that you enjoyed it. Of course, I'm not sure I could say the same without the power of Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole. They are what made the show shine.

War Paint is not to be missed!

by Sondyandme on 9/30/17Nederlander Theatre - New York

Both Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole give their all to make this witty, endearing musical work. The songs are great and the humor had the audience alternating between laughter and thunderous applause. I've seen it multiple times and play the CD often. I would highly recommend War Paint!

    very disappointing

by balloonlady5 on 9/27/17Nederlander Theatre - New York

I've seen quite a few Broadway shows and live theater in general. Even though it was nice to see Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole on stage (and their voices are awesome), we found the score and lyrics to be totally forgettable and all the songs began to sound the same by the end of the show. Dance numbers were minimal at best. Totally a waste of great talent with these 2 ladies. glad I didn't pay full price

    The title was appropriate.

by Deeg24 on 9/23/17Nederlander Theatre - New York

While the history behind the two female icons was interesting, it wasn't Broadway Show caliber. The leads were wonderful but the story content ( drama, dancing, singing) was lacking.

A SPECTACULAR SHOW! A MUST SEE!

by Arguendo on 9/23/17Nederlander Theatre - New York

I have five favorite shows: Chicago, Follies, Company, 1776 & Purlie. I now add War Paint to that list. It was a fantastic theater experience! Patti LaPone & Christine Ebersole were perfect as Helena Rubinstein & Elizabeth Arden. The costumes were exceptional depicting the period from the 1930s to the 1960s. The intrigue and constant one-ups-manship between the two was ferocious. So, with a strong book, great lyrics, sublime music, and great scenery, it was a rare theater treat. I would see it a second time if financially possible!!!!! So . . . my advice . . . go get yourself a ticket as soon as possible!!!!!

It's so nice to see something NEW & ORIGINAL on Broadway. How many times can they re-do Phantom or Miss Saigon?? Very enteraining & fun. The actresses were as awesome as you would expect them to be & then some!! The music & dancing were excellent as well. Great time with my BFF!

    Can't understand the lyrics

by MariaRebecca on 9/19/17Nederlander Theatre - New York

Great show, can't appreciate the music because I can't understand the lyrics. I think both Ebersole and Lupone had issues pronouncing the lyrics. More so with Lupone trying too hard to incorporate German accent while she sings. As a result, I can't fully appreciate what's going on on stage. Great production props. A bit slow pace but nevertheless highly entertaining.

A great show about how 2 women with much in common made history, earned their place in a male dominated world, faced discrimination despite their wealth and power. A must see show

    War Paint was a disappointment

by suze71 on 9/19/17Nederlander Theatre - New York

War Paint disappointed on many scores. Patti Lupone's voice certainly is no longer what it used to be. Christine Ebersole was the better of the two, but perhaps going with less well known actresses but ones with voices more in their prime would have been a better choice. The musical's about women but the women portrayed were done in cardboard style. Perhaps if a woman had been directing a more complex character might have evolved. No great songs. Good costumes. Too much full force singing. Audiences are getting blasted on Broadway. This show like many others needs to improve the range of kind of songs. No song in this show was memorable. Despite all I just wrote, many audience members were enthusiastic. I do think that experienced theater goers will be disappointed.

    Star Power

by WinnerShow on 9/19/17Nederlander Theatre - New York

This show lived up to all of the hype of these two super stars with voices that fill the theater in a way that few others can. The story is poignant and thoughtful about two extraordinary women and their journey in life and business. Lessons are still relevant and this show is well worth seeing while PL and CE are still in it. Bravo.

by LoreB66 on 9/19/17Nederlander Theatre - New York

My first Broadway show was one of the best experiences of my life! Ms. Ebersole and Ms. Lupone have incredible voices and their acting...wow! Don't miss this beautifully staged show! The costumes alone are worth the price of a ticket!

It's a privilege to witness the spectacular performances of theatre legends Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole in a show with gorgeous music, a witty book with depth and bite, and clever, insightful lyrics. Not to mention fantastic costumes, and beautiful production, overall. The entire cast is first-rate. You will be entertained and enlightened and moved.
