About

VAN HALEN IN CONCERT: In their rise stardom, the legendary rockers of Van Halen left an indelible mark on hard rock and heavy metal by challenging conventional notions of what was musically possible. From the hot-wired licks of guitarist Eddie Van Halen to the heart-pounding double bass drumming of his brother Alex, their supercharged sound never fails to excite audiences in concert. And with legendary frontman David Lee Roth bringing his charisma back to the fold, the group has recaptured the same energy that made them a must-see spectacle in the first place. Incendiary hits like “Hot for Teacher” and “Ain’t Talking ‘Bout Love” still sit perfectly beside catchy favorites like “Jump” and “Dance the Night Away”, and ticket buyers can’t help but sing along to all the classics every time Van Halen plays on tour. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Growing up in a musical household, brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen pushed each other to become instrumental virtuosos by their teens. They started playing with dynamic singer David Lee Roth and bassist Marc Anthony in 1974, settling on the eponymous Van Halen moniker later that year. Their self-titled 1978 debut went on to sell over 10 million copies thanks to Eddie’s game-changing guitar playing, Roth’s flamboyant persona, and their undeniably catchy songs. The band became a veritable hard rock institution with their masterstroke album 1984, which contained the number 1 hit “Jump” and helped them crossover from metal to mainstream. Unfortunately, conflicts between Roth and the rest of the band lead to a falling out, and the frontman was replaced by Sammy Hagar. The new Van Halen lineup scored more hits, while Roth concurrently enjoyed a successful solo career. Eventually Hagar split with the group as well, and they briefly hired former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone before announcing a hiatus in 1999. The band reunited with Hagar in 2003 for a reunion tour, but tensions in the band resulted in him leaving again. Tempers between David Lee Roth and the band had cooled by that point, and he rejoined Van Halen in 2006, while Eddie’s son Wolfgang took over on bass. Their fresh lineup still inspires the same pandemonium from their early days, while their 2012 album A Different Kind of Truth (their first record with Roth since 1984) continues to excite fans around the world.

    They Killed It!

by Riccipoo on 10/5/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Kenny Wayne Shepard opened the show, and that was a pleasant surprise. Never heard them live before. Van Halen just killed it! Alex on drums, Wolf on bass and Eddie on guitar-he is still the guitar god! And thank you, David Lee, for some great singing and showmanship. I had a great time!

    Van Halen

by BiffFuckinMalibu on 10/5/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The overall event was just OK...Hollywood Bowl over packed the venue to the point we were shoulder to shoulder with no breathing room. The ushers suck at their job! The row markings are non existent !! OK so that's the VENUE!! The show itself was amazing, Kenny Wayne was great, the camera man got up close and personal and really showed how amazing his talent is. On the other hand the camera man focused on Diamond Dave just a little too much. Would have rather seen more of Alex & Eddie show off their talent rather than David lee Roth's poor display as a singer / front man! It was great to see the band getting along again but at some point you need to let go of the past and bring in a front man that can sing...which Diamond Dave clearly has lost that ability. And finally, as well as Wolfgang played he is not an original member i would have much rather seen Michael Anthony there. I'm not sure the reasons behind Michael Anthony not being a part of this historic reunion but i was actually upset about it!!! FYI...Hollywood Bowl, Spend a little money and paint some markings on the row locations. One last suggestion...There are 4 monitors / Video screens...get 4 camera men out there and show off the freakin' band!!!!!!!

Diamond Dave is more cubic zirconia

    by sinister72 on 10/5/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Eddie Van Halen is one of the best guitarists of our time. He tore it up! Musically, the band was as sharp as they were in the 80s--although I would have preferred Alex instead of Wolfie but that's the nostalgia in me. DLR, in my opinion, made a fool of himself. I loved him back in the day for his singing and showmanship. Listening to him talk his way through my favorite VH tunes hurt me. It hurt more when he tried to sing, omg! He pranced around, sweating but refusing to remove his shirt out of pure vanity. He was wearing what looked like a nude undershirt with printed tattoos and giant scarves that looked like blankets. He told corny jokes, like a cheap variety act ruining every memory I had of VH in their prime. It was sad to witness. I had to play 1984 in the car to erase the memory of the previous hours. Oh, the horror.

VH with KWS (opening act) --> See BOTH!!

    by DG16 on 10/5/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Eddie Van Halen at 60 years of age has it ALL STILL and is simply a wonder to watch … He is able to rip up some incredibly fast hammer-on-off passages still … and also able to stop and switch gears into some gorgeous harmonics … and then also can weave in some mind-bending, note-bending riffs using the way-wah bar and many other features to get the sounds to glide out over us and then bend all around us … EVH is simply a one-of-a-kind guitar jewel … Am I biased? HELL YEAH I am … as the VH1 LP was the first to ever bend my ears. And this Kenny Wayne Shepherd was THE VERY BEST opening act I have ever seen in 50+ years of life on the planet!! WAAAYYY better than Kool & The Gang at Staples in 2012 .. and also a better match of music/talents for a VH-loving crowd. Only 2 things missing from the great evening --> (1) fireworks off the top of the Bowl … and (2) We would have loved seeing an Eddie/Kenny guitar duel-off as an encore to the whole evening!!!

    Eh. Good show, not great.

by latwin on 10/5/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The show was good, not great. Eddie still sounds great and he was running all around the stage, so it was good to see him so lively. DLR is a jackass, we all know that, but his voice sounded good. He told juvenile stories about ogling women and partying, which at his age is embarrassing, but he did put on a show. It would have been nice if he showed some appreciation to the crowd. Wolfgang was a good substitute for Michael Anthony. He just lingered in the shadows and did his thing. His backing vocals were solid. And Alex was Alex. The crowd was heinous. I was surrounded by drunken morons and engulfed in pot smoke all night. I'm normally not a stick in the mud (really!), but it was just too much. I guess I'm glad I went because I had never seen VH with DLR, but it's done and I wouldn't do it again.

    EVH band awesome

by RockTheWorld on 10/5/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Van Halen on Friday 10/2/15 was awesome. Eddie is top of game no doubt. Eddie's playing was like it was 1984 again (the year, not the album). Playing was simply amazing. They performed several unusual songs like Little Guitars and some heavy ones like Get Me a Doctor. Eddie also played Cathedral and the opening to Little Guitars as a solo. What a treat. Yes David Lee's singing is not up to par. Eddie and Alex were playing like it was 1984, but not David Lee. However, I'll take a 80% David Lee over another non-original singer any time.

Band sounded great, Roth not so much

by OMFW on 10/5/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

For years I've been hoping I could see Van Halen live with David Lee Roth as the lead singer. While the band sounded great, Roth's vocals were non-existent/disappointing. The only time the vocals were decent, was when the entire band was singing the chorus. To the band, thanks for giving it a shot with Roth, but it's time to move on.

It Was The Best Of Times, It Was The Worst Of Time

by Cayner on 10/5/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The bottom line - the 3 Van Halens are having fun, musically tight and worth the price of admission. DLR will always be a huge part of the band DNA, but he can't sing... misses lines/lyrics and is more interested in being the center of attention to over compensate for the fact he can't sing. If they hire a VH cover band singer, they could go on forever.

    Mixed up

by Happyvalleymusic on 10/5/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I am not a HUGE Van Halen fan. I like their popular songs but don't know all their music. I have never seen them in concert before. My family went to the concert to really see Eddie Van Halen. He's a master on guitar and wanted to see him. Having David Lee Roth there was a small bonus. The good: Eddie delivered! He's amazing! Show length (about 2 hours) was good. Drum solo was awesome! DLR can still move (impressive). Sound was great. Crowd was great! (I met Jeff Probst - super nice guy.) Venue is nice - very impressed with the amount of toilet stalls!! Someone got that right! Opening band was really good - Kenny Wayne Shepard Band. Overall energy was good. Good to see Wolfgang out there working the bass. The bad: Camera work - focused on DLR too much and not enough close ups on Eddie expect for his guitar solo. DLR - um, he can't sing, or forgot the words, or something like that. But it was the mid-range stuff - he did some of the high notes/screeches. Overall I gave them a 4 just because DLR can't really sing. Am I glad I saw them? YES. Do I need to see them again? No.

    Hollywood Bowl 10/2/15

by garedawg on 10/5/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

As always the Van Halen brothers know how to put on a show. The addition of Eddie's son Wolfgang brought a new dynamic to a very tight band. David Lee Roth is as much if not more of a showman than ever. Very entertaining start to finish. Eddie's guitar solo was the best I have ever seen of the multiple times I have been to their shows.. A definite "must see". Check the setlist below, they play all the hits from the early David Lee Roth era and one recent song"She the Woman".
