Laura Burhenn was born in Omaha, NB in 1981. As a child she studied classical piano before relocating to Washington D.C. She played and sang in several local bands before releasing her 2004 solo debut Wanderlust, an auspicious record that grabbed the attention of former Q and Not U drummer John Davis. The two formed the indie band Georgie James and released the album Places in 2007. The duo disbanded the following year, and Burhenn released her first album under the The Mynabirds moniker in 2010, the critically acclaimed What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood. Both the debut and its 2012 follow-up Generals received praise for Burhenn’s indie soul sensibilities, and struck a chord with reviewers at Pitchfork and NPR’s All Songs Considered. Burhenn and the rest of The Mynabirds continue to win fans over with their must-see live performances sonically-adventurous recordingslike 2015’s Lovers Know.
