About

THE LAST SHIP is a new musical with an original score by 16-time Grammy Award winner Sting. Inspired by Sting's own childhood experiences, this World Premiere production features direction by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Wicked), a book by Tony Award winner John Logan (Red) and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal) and choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Once).

THE LAST SHIP is set in the English seafaring town of Wallsend, a close-knit community where life has always revolved around the local shipyard and the hardworking men construct magnificent vessels with tremendous pride. But Gideon Fletcher dreams of a different future. He sets out to travel the world, leaving his life and his love behind. When Gideon returns home 14 years later, he finds the shipyard's future in grave danger and his childhood sweetheart engaged to someone else. As the men of Wallsend take their future into their own hands and build a towering representation of the shared dream that defines their existence, Gideon realizes that he left behind more than he could have ever imagined.

THE LAST SHIP is a portrait of a community so bound together by passion, faith and tradition, they'll stop at nothing to preserve the only life they've ever known.

I loved everything about this show. Had you crying one minute and laughing the next - full of emotion. Staging and choreography was very effective and the cast was very believable. The music was great. I don't very often buy and soundtrack but purchased this one right away. Would see it again!

My husband & I came from California to see it in Chicago & we were not disappointed! One of the best musicals we have ever seen! Bravo to the writers & the magnificent cast for a performance that we will be talking about for a long time to come. The story was riveting & never lulled or bored us. It kept us wanting more. Thank you Sting for your creativity & mastery of words & music.

"The Last Ship" is a wonderful exhibition of the music of Sting. The plot is a little thin but the the music and choreography make up for it.

    Dynamic tunes!

by ILsailing on 7/14/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The actress who played Meg had an exceptional voice -- it carried well through the audience and she was always on pitch...a joy to listen to. The man who played Jimmy (Sting's childhood friend in real life) had great presence and fortitude. He carried things along well and gave the show gravitas as well as the Father priest. The unique chord changes were very signature Sting. Moving melodies and harmonies. There was a little Latin lilt to one song which was weird and was notable for seeming to be out of place. The graveyard scene was too long -- that scene should be edited, to be shorter. All in all, a very satisfying show. Good luck on Broadway!

    The Last Ship was phenomenal!!

by annashelle on 7/14/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

I took my 14 year old son to see this for his first broadway type show. We were not disappointed. It was absolutely fantastic!!!! I researched seats before I bought tickets. We sat in first two rows of the mezzanine that weren't next to each other because that was all that was left in the highly recommended area. Our seats were fabulous!! I only wish the theater wasn't named after a bank. It takes away from the grandeur of seeing a broadway show. The Bank of American Theater is gorgeous!! Overall, we had a splendid experience!!!

Fell far short of its potential

by TomHfromChicago on 7/14/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

When we Dance was the high point - should have incorporated other proven successful Sting songs adapted to the story line. E.g. Fields of Gold when being shown the lot for the new house. Only good new song was When Pugilist Learns to Dance.

Good story line, good music, and we got to meet Sting to boot. Three days later we are still talking about the show and how much we enjoyed ourselves. It should do very well on Broadway. If you like musicals, Sting's music then this is a must see.

    Ho hum

by Nikki326 on 7/14/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The lead charactor , Gitdeon was not compelling. Not a great voice, lacking in charisma and a wooden actor. I could not get involved or believe the love story. Supporting cast was great and the dance numbers excellent. Many holes in plot. The priest diverted millions is dollars of church funds??? Gideon is gone for 15 years but comes back and expects woman to still love him ?

We purchased discounted tickets on Travelzoo and weren't quite sure what to expect. Well, we were pleasantly surprised to see a great musical. The play has some typical story lines and the music is really good, especially if you are a fan do Sting. The production is very professional .
