About

The Fantasticks, the world's longest-running musical, is a captivating and simple romantic comedy about a boy, a girl, two fathers and a wall.  The audience uses its imagination to follow El Gallo as he creates a world of moonlight and magic, and then pain and disillusionment, until the boy and girl find their way back to one other.  The score, which includes "Try To Remember", "They Were You" and "Soon It's Gonna Rain", is as timeless as the story itself.  Having played a record-breaking 17,162 performances in its original run at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village,  and recently celebrated its 20,000th performance at the Snapple Theater Center, The Fantasticks is a true New York institution which The Wall Street Journal calls "THE PERFECT MUSICAL".

The actors and actresses were wonderful, as well as the musicians! Just think the story line was blah.

Wonderful talent. Sweet ambiance. Whimsical and powerful- side by side. A lovely afternoon. Creative use of props. In a small space, magic can happen!

Still terrific after all these years

by CraigGM on 1/20/16The Theater Center - New York

My wife and I saw this play about 30 years ago when it was downtown. We loved it then and we loved it now. The message is timeless. These actors were terrific with great voices, memorable songs and enough laughs from the four 'old guys' to make the day. I especially thought the lead's voice was incredible. I'd give it 5 stars

    A timeless classic

by Anonymous on 1/20/16The Theater Center - New York

A wonderful, magical show. A small show in a small theater, it's the perfect counterpoint to the blockbuster musicals that surround it. Take a vacation from broadway and allow the charming and talented cast of The Fantasticks to share with you a timeless tale that is the longest running show in New York. Once you've seen it you'll understand why.

    Beautiful voices

by AliceLiddel on 12/21/15The Theater Center - New York

This was my third time seeing The Fantasticks, and the cast did not disappoint. The director chose to play the comedy a bit broadly, sometimes to the sacrifice of sweeter emotional moments. But this is a musical, and it's mostly sung, so the the whole show rests on the voices of the cast. And all of them could sing. Not only that, because The Fantasticks is done black box theater style, the actors were not mic'ed. It's a pleasure to hear a human voice unadulterated.

    THE FANTASTICKS was Fantastic

by Jimcap4 on 12/15/15The Theater Center - New York

My girlfriend and I both loved it There's a reason this show lasted 55 years. Within minutes of starting, the show puts a smile on your face that will last the whole time. An very unique and heartwarming theatrical experience. The sets & costumes are minimal, and the orchestra consists of a piano and harp. But don't be put off by that, because it all works beautifully. Also theater is small and cozy, and doesn't need a sound system. This allows the great cast to really connected with the audience. After the show they mingled, telling stories and signing autographs with us in the lobby. I will definitely be seeing this show again, "Deep in December our hearts should remember And follow..."

    Time for the Final Curtain

This is apparently the longest-running musical in New York. It seems like it is time for this one to close.

The Fantasticks is still worth seeing

by Manintheaudience on 11/12/15The Theater Center - New York

The Fantasticks has not aged well since its 1960 opening, but is still well worth seeing as an important part of theater history, especially in a production as beautifully performed as this one. It's rare to be able to see such gifted artists in such an intimate setting. If you want to be dazzled by special effects, go see a movie. If you want to see live actors lovingly recreate a classic production, go see this Fantasticks.

    a classic

by donno on 10/10/15The Theater Center - New York

I've seen the Fantasticks several times over the last few decades and it just keeps getting better. The ensemble cast is perfect. I saw a matinee with two understudies and they are excellent. The small theater makes for an intimate performance. How wonderful to see a musical where the cast do not need microphones. The piano/harp are well-balanced to the singers. I particularly enjoyed the actors who played Henry and Mortimer. The musical itself never fails to evoke many emotions in its audience, from tears to laughter, and it speaks directly to the heart and the child in all of us. The only regrets are the changes that have been from the original, including the Rape Ballet's lyrics (for politically correct reasons) and the odd choice to switch the words at the end of the musical from "you must always leave the wall" to "it's not about the wall." Messing with the original poetry of the writer is never wise and, quite frankly, the lyrics were perfection the first time around. Other than that, I would drag everyone I know to see this show over and over again.

    Go somewhere else

by TheatergoerSeptember on 10/1/15The Theater Center - New York

I have seen high school students act better than the cast of The Fantasticks. In fact, I recall the actors in the original play were better. The voices were nice, but the acting is weak if not terrible.

Pretty and the most lovable musical in all time

by Tomoyuki on 10/1/15The Theater Center - New York

I saw this musical from two decades ago. And this is the first time on Broadway Theater. This is still pretty and the most lovable musical in all time. The actors' singings are very natural. All of songs are master peaces. And they are sung without mikes. It takes me to a dream. Hope The Fantasticks will be performed forever.

    Love, Love, Love this Show!!

by CGmiamiNY on 7/21/15The Theater Center - New York

I have seen this show over 20 times and I am such a fan of the music, the script, and sometimes I just go to see the newer actors playing the roles. It's such a refreshing show detailing a "Romeo and Juliet" scenario that is sure to warm hearts and make lots of smiles. Thank you for staying on production year after year... it gives me more opportunities to see the show whether alone, or with friends/family. I also like that it's small and intimate, with only 2 musicians who are perfect in their ways and cues. The beginning song "Try to Remember"... reminds me of my elder brother and sisters (I'm the youngest of 5) that listened to these songs that made it to radio back in the 60s/70s... so now I appreciate the music more... brings a burning smile to me every time!!

    Wonderful Performance Of A Classic

by Friedmam on 7/1/15The Theater Center - New York

I first saw The Fantasticks at The Sullivan Street Playhouse. I have very fond memories and the current performance lived up to every one of them. The performers were talented, skilled, and had excellent voices. The theater is reminiscent of the Sullivan Street location. My only criticism is that there was some construction or other activity on the floor above that disturbed some of the scenes. I would suggest that you ask about this before picking a date.

    Never disappoints!

by Anonymous on 5/6/15The Theater Center - New York

My wife and four teenage children visit NYC from Boston each Christmas season and make it a point to see the Fantasticks. The children love the humor contained in dialogue and songs. Chuck full of many life lessons and common sense themes. Intimate and comfortable theater. A show that should not be missed.
