Stray Cats in Concert
That slinky, walking bassline? That snap-snap-snap of fingers, and the soulful, sensual croon? It's the unmistakable sound of "Stray Cat Strut," and it's wafting its way from a dark alley once again as the international kings of the rockabilly revival gear up to hit the road. The summer of 2019 marks the Stray Cats' 40th-anniversary tour through England, Scandinavia, and the U.S., performing hits like "Stray Cat Strut," "(She's) Sexy + 17," and "Rock This Town" — which was named by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the songs that shaped rock ‘n' roll — alongside soon-to-be classics from their upcoming 11th album.
Featuring their first new material as a band in 26 years, ‘40' was announced in early March with the release of lead single "Cat Fight (Over a Dog Like Me)," with trendsetting bandleader Brian Setzer, upright bassist Lee Rocker, and drummer Slim Jim Phantom regaling a typically debauched, degenerate tale. After participating in various high-profile side projects over the years and reuniting in 2018 for concerts in Las Vegas and California, the veteran trio is in classic, cool-cat form and most definitely ready to rock.
Stray Cats Background
In this anything-goes time of musical cross-pollination, it's hard to believe that rockabilly ever needed a revival, but in the late ‘60s through the '70s the sound that gave birth to rock ‘n' roll had fallen into obscurity. Enter three eccentric 20-something musicians from upstate New York. Setzer, Rocker, and Phantom were obsessed with rockabilly originators like Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, and Eddie Cochran — not just their toe-tapping, swing-dancing sound but their dapper look and lovable tough-guy attitude. They came together in 1979 but found fame after relocating to London and releasing their eponymous debut in 1981. The ‘Stray Cats' album established the band as retro-leaning innovators and put rockabilly back on the musical map, and the band returned to the U.S. to lead a rockabilly revival that has evolved over the decades into an all-around appreciation for vintage Americana rock. The Cats have disbanded and reunited a few times over the years, and separately Setzer, Rocker, and Phantom have played with the likes of George Harrison, Keith Richards, Jerry Lee Lewis, Los Lobos, Mike Ness, and many other icons of rock. But when they come together in their original form their allure is irresistible — and going strong after 40 years.

The three performers were so filled with energy, it was contagious and the entire house caught it. I have never before seen a crowd of mostly 60 and 70 yr olds forget they had chairs and just stand and sway and cheer from start to finish. They were more than a treat, they were a blessing! PLEASE tell them to not hide that talent for another 40 years! They are a one-of-a-kind!!! I wish there were more than 5 stars.
Had a great time. My 8 year old knew all the lyrics and hung in there for 1st oncore song, then we bailed. Staff was sweet to her, which was impressive and appreciated!
Great show! Entering the Humphrey's concert area was pretty simple. Some people lined up at the back door and didn't realize they could get right in through the front entrance. Great weather, friendly people, nice environment. Not too ever crowded like some venues.
Beautiful venue. But, the rows are way to close together. You could hard stand up with pumping into the person if front of you or walk in and out of the row.
The Stray Cats rocked! They were very impressive and showed lots of talent and showmanship. I must admit I liked them in the 80s and was not expecting them to rock the house for their 40th anniversary. I was wrong They rocked the house and I loved it!!!! Great concert!
How rarely do the Stray Cats perform? I was willing to fly in to town to watch them perform, since they weren’t touring where I live and I wanted to see the tour finale. Turns out, it was worth every penny I spent. Brian Setzer tours all the time, but there’s something special about seeing the three original members playing together. All three guys seemed in great spirits and were at the top of their game, even after a long tour (and 40 years). Great show — can’t wait for the next one!
Great show.....hope they don’t wait another 40 years to do it again.
Great show, Stray Cats were raucous and incredibly FUN! The crowd was having a blast, singing along. There was dancing everywhere. It really was like a giant party at Humphrey’s by the Bay. For a trio, they are tight and very, very professional.
The music was great! Super tight, and Brian Setzer is phenomenal. Sadly the crowd really sucked. Why are people spending $130/ticket to get wasted and talk through the entire show?? I've waited my entire adult life to hear these guys play together. Instead i had to listen to some white wine chugging middle-agers talk about their kid's soccer schedules while posting selfies on social media. This happens EVERY single time at Humphrey's. There is zero breathing room between the tiny wedding chairs they set up so you're just forced to endure bad behavior at an insanely high cost. I wish they would take out one chair per row and have more open space to stand. Until then, i will avoid that venue at all costs because it is such a huge disappointment.
