About

Sporting Kansas City History

Sporting Kansas City has the honor of being one of the original franchises of Major League Soccer, first kicking off in 1996 as the Kansas City Wiz. A year later, the name changed to the Kansas City Wizards, which remained in use until the end of the 2010 season.

The Wiz/Wizards/Sporting KC were founded by Lamar Hunt, who owned the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL. Hunt also helped to create Major League Soccer, the American Football League, and the United Soccer Association of the '60s, and his Hunt Sports Group owned the Wizards until shortly before he died in 2006.

Kansas City's MLS franchise has been home to some of the greatest names in American and international soccer, including Alexi Lalas, Tony Meola, Preki and Matt Besler. They have had a sustained period of achievement under former Wizards player and 2000 MLS Defender of the Year Peter Vermes, who has coached the team since 2009.

Sporting KC have claimed the MLS Cup in 2000 and 2013, a Supporters’ Shield in 2000 and four U.S. Open Cup titles (2004, 2012, 2015, and 2017). In 2023, Kansas City reached the Conference Semifinals of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

    Don't overpay for poor seats

by Spenttoomuch4whatigot on 8/19/15Sporting Park - Kansas City

Nice venue from the outside, but poorly handled on the inside. Even though you spend good money for what you think are assigned seats, you don't get your seats and in fact, you don't even get to sit down. We went to the seat numbers on our tickets and were told that these are not assigned seats, but rather first-come, first-serve - by the usher. Despite purchasing tickets that included a designation of "seat", we were unable to sit THE ENTIRE match. 2+ hours of standing made for a miserable experience.

    Loud and fun!

by Shamrockm on 7/21/15Sporting Park - Kansas City

I love MLS and have been to a few stadiums. This one is loud and fun. They have a good variety of food and drinks. I had a gyro and a signature beer named for the team!

Sporting KC game was a great time!!!

by gandkmom247 on 7/21/15Sporting Park - Kansas City

My boys and I had a great time at the game. We arrived before gates opened, and once staff came out they were all very friendly. Many of them approached my boys and chatted with them, once inside we enjoyed some meal and drink deals for that day. Again all staff we encountered were very helpful and friendly. The game was exciting and the crowd was a lot of fun.

    Enjoyable outing, great atmosphere

by Wschart on 7/2/15Sporting Park - Kansas City

This has been my year for attending professional football. In April, I went to London to attend an English Premier League match (QPR vs West Ham) and so I decided I should also go see the closest MLS team: Sporting KC. The stadium was easy to find: west on I-70 to 435, then north a little ways. I did have to fumble around a bit to find the general parking, but a helpful attendant at a reserved lot got me going in the right direction. I was a bit surprised that there was free parking available. You have to walk a bit, but what the hey. There are closer lots available for pay. The stadium is located next to a large shopping center and there are various eating establishment for a pre-game meal. There were a number of people tailgating in the parking lots too. The stadium itself is nice. It is only a few years old, so everything is nice. This is a soccer-specific stadium, so the stands are nice and close to the pitch. I had a GA ticket for the south stands, located behind the one goal, so I had a nice view of the action at that end. The game was close to if not actually a sellout and the crowd was quite into the game. In front of my section was a group of people, presumably connected with the team, who served as cheerleaders. Not the kind you find in the NFL, but true cheerleaders to get the crowd going. Three had drums, the other two stood on a platform and had megaphones. The kept going throughout the game. The game itself was entertaining, plenty of action and good plays. The home side prevailed 2-0, helped by some good saves by the keeper. I will probably go again sometime.

    Great Experience.

by Coloradoseahawk on 7/1/15Sporting Park - Kansas City

As a fan of the opposing team, I couldn't help but get excited for Sporting KC. The energy was amazing, the fans were very respectful, and the entire experience was much better than the other MLS stadiums I have visited.

Best atmosphere I have seen in a long time.

by Anonymous on 6/30/15Sporting Park - Kansas City

The stadium was almost packed even though it was a bottom table team they were going against. No one went to see some big name world super play and yet the crowd was there chanting and celebrating The stadium is simply world class. Beautifully constructed and every seat is a great seat. To watch

    Fun to watch but...

by Iolakid on 6/30/15Sporting Park - Kansas City

I love watching sporting kc play, it's a great team, the stadium is always clean and nice, the only problem I have is, the third time I went I unknowingly bought general admission tickets. GA ticket don't guarantee you a seat. We got to the game an hour early and the entire section was filled and we had to stand the entire game which wouldn't be bad but there was a lot of people standing also. So watch out for that when you are buying tickets. Other than that, I had a good time drinking $10 beers

SKC vs St. Louis First-Ever Match was Exciting!

by RageCage42 on 6/22/15Sporting Park - Kansas City

Cup match between two teams that have never played each other before. I was very impressed with the turn out by the St. Louis fans. This could be the making of a new rivalry once St. Louis joins the MLS. Great game, great weather, and the place was rockin'!

GREAT GAME even though we lost!

by coachgirlssoccer on 6/19/15Sporting Park - Kansas City

Sporting Park and the plaza was very impressive! All of the event personnel were very helpful and professional, as were all of the Sporting fans even though I was with St. Louis FC supporters. Only negative comment was prices of concessions, they were high.

Another great night at Sporting Park!

by Tashinka on 6/9/15Sporting Park - Kansas City

This was most assuredly not my first time at the Park, it wasn't even my first time in the SRO section (that was the MLS Cup Final - which we won - in 2013). But it was my first time doing SRO during the regular season, and it was better than I thought. We took turns with the other fans standing at the rail and watching the game, and the screen at the end of the field was helpful when trying to see a play in more detail. It was hard standing on concrete for 2 hours, though (but better than the Final in 2013, since it wasn't 20 degrees and there weren't 10 rounds of penalty kicks adding to the time). Anyway, I would absolutely do it again, especially if that's what it took to go to a sold-out game (highest attendance ever for a regular season game) where we were destined to defeat the first-place team! Sporting Park is always an amazing experience, whether you're sitting or standing or jumping up and down like a crazy person giving high fives to strangers!

You won't find a better atmosphere anywhere else besides sporting park! Good game good food a little pricey but you tend to expect that! Good seats I thought we wouldn't have good enough seats but I was shocked how good they were!
