About

SLOAN IN CONCERT:

Power pop titans Sloan have achieved cult status in their native Canada and built a diehard following around the world thanks to their potent blend of crunchy riffs and catchy hooks. The band's four members share songwriting duties, and the result is a wildly diverse sound that encompasses jaunty piano ditties, charging pop-punk, and stirring power ballads. Each member sings their own songs in concert, treating fans to a steady stream of distinct styles – from Chris Murphy's bright tenor to Patrick Pentland's rocking growl – before wowing them with gorgeous four-part harmonies. Their all-together-now enthusiasm in concert has ticket buyers singing along on stadium-worthy anthems like "Underwhelmed," "The Other Man," and "The Rest of My Life." Every aspect of Sloan's eclectic, infectious sound is cranked to the max when they perform live, and fans can’t get enough of the rocking party.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Bassist Chris Murphy and drummer Andrew Scott formed Sloan in 1991 while attending the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Guitarists Patrick Pentland and Jay Ferguson joined shortly after, creating the core lineup that’s remained unchanged for over 25 years. The band made their full-length debut in 1992 with Smeared, and instantly caught on with alternative rock fans in Canada. Unfortunately they had frequent disputes with their record label Geffen, who balked at promoting their hooky rock outside Canada during the grunge-obsessed '90s, and following the release of their 1994 sophomore album Twice Removed they split with the label. They used their own label Murderecords to release their 1996 album One Chord to Another, which was a huge critical and commercial success at home and received rave reviews when it was released in the US a year later. The group amassed fans through the late '90s and early '00s with perpetual touring and consistently solid records, and in 2006 they finally cracked the US charts with their eighth album Never Hear the End of It. Their popularity continued to grow abroad, leading up to the Top 10 debut of their 2014 album Commonwealth on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Well into their third decade together, Sloan continues to impress both critics and fans with their adventurous recordings and powerhouse concerts.

    1st Show Did Not Dissapoint!

    by Tom on 7/12/23

Fantastic show! I had never seen them before and didn't realize that each band member sings their own songs. All have a slightly different feel. Almost like four separate indie bands in one. Played for a full two hours, with an intermission halfway thru the show. Two thumbs WAY UP!!!

Sloan puts on a great show

    by Elle on 7/4/23

Sloan was incredible live. The venue was quaint but very nice. My boyfriend is a huge fan and has now seen them 4 times live and he loves it every time. We traveled 5 hours to see them and it was all worth it. They're even better live than their recorded albums. After the show Chris Murphy did a bit of a meet and greet and we got to talk to him and he gave us a program and signed it. Overall a fantastic experience and we will absolutely be seeing them again.

A great show that was almost perfect

by Daryl on 6/25/23Saint Andrew's Hall - Detroit

Sloan brought the goods and played a tight, fun show. My only criticism is that I felt that the FOH mix favored the bass to the detriment of the vocals and guitars. Drum mix was perfect, and the bass sounded great but was too dominant in the mix and made it hard to hear Patrick Pentland’s guitar solos and the vocals during the first set. But I had a ball anyway, and the staff at the hall was awesome.

The best Canada has to offer

by bweets on 3/10/20Saint Andrews Hall - Detroit

One of the most underrated bands ever and they always put on a great show. The Detroit show was packed and the setlist was a great sampling of all their albums.

    Too many people...

by Matthew Gilbert on 3/10/20Saint Andrews Hall - Detroit

This show was horribly oversold as is becoming the norm for shows at Saint Andrew’s. They think by opening the Shelter it allows them to pack more people in and everyone tries to cram themselves on the main floor. It makes for a very unenjoyable time.

Solid show from a veteran band who sounds in their prime

by MommyUnit on 3/2/203TEN Austin City Limits Live - Austin

Sloan gave a really solid show sure to please old fans and new discoverers, alike. Their first set was comprised of playing their Navy Blues album in its entirety, a very fun way to start the concert. Their next set was a satisfying mix of songs from the considerable catalogue. Perfect venue and memorable show.
