STS9 (SOUND TRIBE SECTOR 9) IN CONCERT:
STS9 take fans to groovy new stratospheres with impassioned performances and a unique mix of EDM, jazz, and psychedelic rock. The group prefers building a vibe to showing off with flashy flourishes, but these rockers know their instruments -- each memberÕs instrumental prowess is on full display at all times. Drummer Zach Velmer and percussionist Jeffree Lerner combine acoustic and electronic rhythms to create a larger-than-life beat. Bassist Alana Rocklin gets heads bobbing and bodies swaying with her tasty, swinging basslines. And keyboardist David Phipps and guitarist Hunter Brown alternate between smooth leads and effects-drenched rhythm chords to keep things moving and grooving. Altogether STS9 has loaded up their funky spaceship with a killer sound system and their most immersive laser-light show yet, promising to take ticket buyers on an interstellar ride during their 2015 tour.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Formed in Atlanta in 1998, the original STS9 (short for Sound Tribe Sector 9) lineup featured Hunter Brown (guitar/midi), David Phipps (keys), Zach Velmer (drums), and David Murphy (bass/midi). The group soon released their debut album Interplanetary Escape Vehicle (1999), gaining attention for their mastery of jazz, funk, and electronica. Percussionist Jeffree Lerner came on board a year later and brought fleshed-out dance influences, which featured prominently on their 2000 sophomore effort Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace. The band then opened for superstars like Snoop Dogg, NAS, and Bassnectar before headlining tours of their own that fueled their growing reputation for stellar live performances. After David Murphy left the group in 2014, the band reached out to long-time friend and seasoned touring bassist Alana Rocklin to handle the low end. The refreshed lineup continues to bring mind-expanding music and far-out laser-light spectaculars to arenas and festivals around the world, converting more and more fans each step of the way.
The tribe blew the house away with two killer sets! The music sounded fantastic and the lights were great. Liberty Hall is always fun too! STS9 always delivers, can't wait to see you again and lose my mind!

While the band is talented and the light show amazing, the people that attend Sound Tribe make the concert experience what it is. We met so many awesome people and thanks to the theater's liberal policy, everyone was able to get their smoke on. Once the show started, the dancing began. The concert, for me, turned into a series of beats, lights and shadows. The like energy that was released was a high in itself.
It will melt your face off. Literally UNBELIEVABLE. Like nothing else.
Venue, Music, Lights ... all 5 stars! It was my first STS9 experience but most certainly will not be my last.

This was my first time seeing Alana perform with the band and she was fabulous. The energy in the room was high and the entire experience enjoyable. I will definitely see STS9 when they come back this way again.

STS9 was excellent, much better than the last time I saw them a few years ago! And it couldnt have gotten much better being with The New Deal another one of my favorites...was alot of fun.

Sound Tribe Sector 9 killed it Saturday night at the Fillmore Detroit. Played some of my favorite tunes. What a special night. Emancipator Ensemble opened and rocked the house!

Not my kind of music I guess, mostly loops of simple instrumental riffs. Great drummer.
This ensemble absolutely BLEW ME AWAY. I will NEVER miss another performance when they are in the Bay Area. The Oakland FOX Theatre sound system ROCKS, and the laser show was OUTSTANDING.

The show was nothing short of amazing! The new bassist Alana was stellar and the band really grooved together in such a good way! I've been seeing this band for seven years and it never gets old. If you haven't seen them yet definitely do! So worth it!
Excellent live as hell. Great crowd and ways love the venue-- gotta do GA though no matter what- had more than enough space right near the front of the stage to dance with friends.
