The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee follows six awkward adolescents through their daunting and hilarious championship quest. As they navigate the tournament’s pressures, the eccentric coterie finds a new sense of belonging. Along the way, they learn that there is more to life than winning a trophy. This charming coming-of-age tale also invites four volunteers from the audience to participate in each performance, ensuring new and unexpected comedy every night. Peter Flynn (1776) returns to direct this heartwarmingly quirky Tony-winning musical comedy.
What a fun afternoon! Would see it again! My husband, who does nothing culturally, also loved it as well.
My daughter, a neighbor and I went to see this play on Saturday and I must say that we had a BLAST! We had front row seats and we loved the audience participation. All of the actors were amazing. They kept us intertained and laughing throughout the entire production.
From beginning to end, we laughed and enjoyed the performances by both the professional actors and the four audience volunteers. The writing was witty and fast paced. Only a little stretched by the no admission running time. Especially loved the little bio intros to each speller and the "use the word in a sentence" replies.
Yes, amazing and hilarious! We left the theater laughing as we walked to the car and couldn't tell enough people about it the next day. If you missed it, get thee to Ford's Theater TODAY! It closes on the 17th!
The comfort counselor was awesome! The children thought he was so funny. Thank you for including members from the audience. Our son had a blast. Our daughter couldn't stop laughing!
I thoroughly enjoyed the show. The audience participation was a novel idea & added an element of suspense. Great singing & dancing and a cute theme. Mitch scared me a little in the beginning. How did he get his eyes to stay like that?
Throughly enjoyable experience. Actors were terrific, the music was great and we laughed almost continuously.
Great date night! Cast was wonderful with amazing vocal and acting talent. I have already recommended the show to all my friends and family!
What an unexpected pleasure. The music was fast and fun, the story kinda corny (but aren't most musicals?), and is was FUNNY in so many ways. Political humor, tender at times, uplifting. My husband and the guy a couple seats down couldn't stop laughing. Would go again. Great break from tourist activities.
I can picture many high school drama departments picking up on this play for their students to put on.
This was a great show...I surprised my wife with the tickets...She loved the venue as well.
I had seen this show on Broadway several years ago in the company of teenagers so thought my 11 year old granddaughter would enjoy it. The Washington performance seemed to me to put emphasis on the happy, funny, zany parts of being young and de-emphasized the unhappy circumstances that led to the finalists being in the spelling competition, which were more evident in the New York interpretation, The performance was thoroughly enjoyable. My granddaughter said she would like to see it AGAIN. We spoke briefly with the actors after the show and that was a plus, too. A great day. We had seen A Christmas Carol at the Ford Theatre two years running and my granddaughter noted that some of the same actors were in this show. Thank you.
Cast was wonderful! Show was so good that the time just flew! Great venue
Highly recommend for an evening of laughter and good times. The addition of audience members to the cast was an added bonus and very funny - improve style funny. I would highly recommend. This was also our first time and Ford's theater. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house, and we will definitely be back.
This was an amazing, funny and light-hearted broadway musical. We have wanted to see if for some time, but were unable to catch it in NYC before it closed its doors. Was thrilled to get the chance to see it on tour. There is definite adult humor, so would not bring young children. Great time at the theater.
Excellent production and superb performances from all.
Loved it! My teenage daughter was skeptical about a play based on a spelling bee, but she and we had so much fun. It's not really a spelling bee. It's about the emotions and expectations of being a kid and the pressures associated with competing. It was a talented cast.
Spelling Bee was really fun, my 12 and 14 year old boys also loved it! Seeing it while on vacation in DC and at Fords Theater was a complete bonus!!!
My grandkids ages 13 and 15 really enjoyed it. My daughter and son-in-law enjoyed it too. And I (Grandma) enjoyed it too. Lots of laughs for the whole family. We laughed out loud a lot and continued to talk about and laugh about it for several days. The renovated theatre is beautiful and very comfortable.
I loved the show. The audience participation aspect was fantastic. It was consistently funny and light on its feet. Highly recommended.
