Arizona Coyotes History

Before they were the Arizona Coyotes, this franchise — a founding member of the World Hockey Association — was originally based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and began playing in 1972 as the Jets. The early team made headlines before the season even started after signing hockey star Bobby Hull from the Chicago Blackhawks. The Jets went on to be one of the best teams in the league, winning three titles from 1976 to 1979.

The WHA merged with the NHL before the 1979-1980 season, but the Jets were unable to maintain their dominance and the franchise was relocated to Arizona before the 1996-1997 season; they became known as the Phoenix Coyotes. The Coyotes subsequently qualified for the postseason in each of their first four seasons and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky became a minority owner of the team in 2000 and their head coach in 2005.

After filing bankruptcy in 2009, the team was later purchased by the NHL. Despite the tumultuous seasons, the Coyotes won 50 games during the 2009-2010 season. In the 2011-2012 season, they won their first division title in franchise history. In 2013, the NHL sold the team and its name was changed to the Arizona Coyotes in 2014. Since 1997, the Coyotes have made it to the playoffs a total of nine times.

You have to see an NHL game in this barn

by APK on 2/25/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

I've been to several different NHL cities to see the Leafs play in 18,000+ capacity arenas, and seeing the Buds play in Phoenix was the best game experience so far, hands down. Other cities I've seen games in like Nashville, Tampa, Miami, Raleigh, and Las Vegas have great fans and nice arenas, and great in-game experiences, but the Mullett is like no other. With a capacity of 4,600 for NHL games, it feels like you're in a small-town Canada junior hockey rink. There's not a bad seat in the house, and the sounds of the game - the hitting, the crisp passing, the missed shots hitting the glass, and even the players communicating during play - make for an an immersive and sensory NHL experience that no other city can come close to. Tickets are expensive, as we paid about $375 CAD each, but we were 10 rows back on the Coyotes end and right on top of the action. If you're thinking about seeing a game at the Mullett but are hesitant because of the price, I promise you it will be the best money you'll ever spend on an NHL game.

    Drums behind our seats

by Troy on 2/24/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

The game was great however the team has a drum team that sets up right behind our seats. They continually rounded on the drums right in our ears. It made the game less enjoyable. I'd suggest putting a disclaimer on those seats stating that they will be there pounding drums the whole game

    A Perfect Night

by Hawkestone on 2/24/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

Easy parking, great standing room experience, excellent beer and grilled cheese, and a big win for the Maple Leafs with Austen scoring Numero 50 in the 1st period. The Yotes are my second favourite hockey team!

    Coyotes game

by JayD on 2/23/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

Overall experience was good. Two things bothered us…My wife brought her smallest purse,4”x7”. One guy said it was ok and no worries. Next guy came along and said we had to get rid of it. Not cool as I had to run back to the car with it. Next thing was our seat was great except for the railing right in our view. Missed half the game trying to look around it. But everything turned out ok as Oilers beat coyotes 6-3!!!

    Fabulous

by Scooper on 2/20/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

We loved everything about the MN Wild vs. AZ Coyotes game and Mullett Arena!!! We felt like we were at a youth hockey arena. It was fun to be able to hear some of the players that were on the ice. It was great to see so many Wild fans. Bucket List - check!

Great view of the game no matter where you are

by Lorraine on 2/19/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

A small arena but big on concessions, and fan experience.

    Great view/service and selections

by StewRoy on 2/18/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

View of the ice was unbearable as was the service. We didn’t have to wait for anything and the food choices were really good.

    Drums in the arena

by MN Fan on 2/17/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

Everything about our experience was great except the 🥁 🥁 🥁 behind the goal where the visiting team shoots twice. Who thinks having those rights behind the fans on the top row is ok? It's not and you need to remove them or put a warning on those seats!

    Cool venue

by Mo on 1/26/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

The mullett is an awesome place to watch the coyotes. It's very loud with a party atmosphere. However, it should be noted that the seating located behind the net, are bleachers.

    Coyotes vs Predators

by John on 1/23/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

Arena is small as expected but enjoyable at the same time being food, beverage and restrooms are in much closer proximity than back in Glendale without major lines. Once the game ended the arena staff rudely rushed us out the door and made us exit on the other side of the building from where we came in. Unfortunate way to end a great afternoon and great game.

    A Unique NHL Experience Awaits

by Mark K on 1/16/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

If you get the chance to attend an NHL game in Phoenix while the team plays out of the small ASU arena, do it! It's unquestionably a memorable pro sport experience since the arena capacity is about 75% lower than any other arena in the league. From the easy parking and access to get in, the short beer /concession lines and then the outstanding sight lines from virtually any seat, this is a fun sports experience.

    A Must!

by Scott on 1/15/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

Best way to exprience an NHL game. You can hear the skates cutting into the ice. If you love hockey, put Mullet for an NHL game on the list of must do's!

Felt like a more intimate experience.

by Jody on 1/14/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

Prices were to high considering the venue but I did enjoy the game here. It felt very intimate and evolved. I'd def see a NHL game there again.

    Coyotes Drummers are classless

by JHH on 1/7/24Mullett Arena - Tempe

When the Islanders come to town, the Islanders fans come out. Every time the fans started a "Let's Go Islanders"chant, the Coyotes drummers interrupt with 3 beats to try and stir the Coyotes fans into a "Let's Go 'Yotes"chant. This is totally classless. If your fans are being out-cheered by the opposition's fans, make your team better to attract better home team fans.
