Script was so Confusing to follow. Could have done better. Understood it after reading the notes given after show
It was quite difficult to understand what it was about. What was described in the sheet handed out after the play bore little resemblance to the actual play.
Enjoyed every minute. If you like who done it it’s a must see
My son and I were in NYC for one night during some travel. He’s an adult, hadn’t been to NYC before, so I wanted to take him to see a Broadway show. We saw the big billboard in Times Square and thought Ooh! Fun! Longest running play in New York? Wow! It was just off Broadway, but on the 4th floor of a “theater center.” We were 2 of 15 people there, spread out among the first 5 rows. The female lead begins her part juggling phone calls — “gotta take this, hold on, what? No. Hang on. That’s the maid agency. Have you got someone for me, don’t make me cook dinner for myself tonight…” This went on endlessly. I have no idea how many calls she was supposedly on because she never once took a breath to “listen.” I was cringing. She has done this show WAY too many times. She’s just running through it. Which doesn’t help because it’s an absurdly confusing play. The acting was noticeably bad on her part. The Patient and The Detective did quite well though. At least it was actual acting. But even the best actors could not have saved this thing. Anyway, what a mess. And I paid $150 on Ticketmaster for our tickets. And wasted our one night in NYC. And ps, the solution sheet they give you at the end was the only good part because we could sort of suss out where we were supposed to have learned about x, y, z. Everyone just walked out deflated. It was silent all the way to the sidewalk. Really. It needs to stop running now.
(Spoiler: we looked up the show beforehand.) it was like watching a murder mystery book unfold in front of our eyes. We enjoyed trying to catch all the clues and put the pieces together. In the end, we figured out the entire perfect crime. Look it up before you go to get background information and you will love it.
Not knowing the theme of the play, I was taken back by all the violence. It should have been titled, Perfect Crimes! There was good acting, which helped keep the play light!
Went to see this with several girlfriends for a “girls’ day out”. We found the play to be a little confusing at the beginning. Things started to make sense as the play progressed but I think there could have been a little bit better “introduction” of some of the parts upfront. It was interesting that, upon leaving the theater, you are provided with a question and answer/cheat sheet to the play. We discussed this over dinner and had actually already solved most of what was asked. One or two of the questions were not really explored during the play. Could not beat the price of tickets.
We read some negative reviews on this so wanted to provide another perspective! This is a well acted complex whodunit-play. The characters were believable, the acting was great, the dialogue was witty and engaging, and the theater was small which provided an intimate view of the actors and stage setting. It was great! Yes it was complex, and both my husband and I lost track of some of what was going on in the second act....but that didn't really bother us. At the end of the play, the theater also handed out a list of explanations of the more obscure points which helped us tie some loose ends together. I think this should be a cult classic, really, it is unique and a lot of fun. We were not disappointed.
All I can say, you be the judge, how good is a mystery when you receive a 2 sided document at the end of the play to explain what the heck happened???
Quaint theatre, great staff. Most of the audience was confused by intermission; felt like key pieces were deleted or the actors talked so fast in the beginning we couldn’t catch it.
The acting was superb but the plot had too many twists and turns and it was difficult to get all the nuances of the goings on. Fortunately an answer sheet handed out at the end of the show helped unravel all the intricacies if you were still interested by then.
I first saw the show in May 1988. It was my first Broadway show and it was quickly followed by Cats and A Chorus Line. Fast forward to 2022 and I saw it again (in a seemingly much smaller venue). Loved it. Much of it seem different than the first time I saw it, but was enjoyable nonetheless. Catherine Russell is still as beautiful and talented today as she was to a then 22 year old.
Any play that I need an answer key for I wish I hadn’t wasted my time or money. Having to wear a mask for the entire thing was ridiculous and had I know. That was required I would not have gone. The actress looks 10 years past the part she is playing.
It was an honor to watch Catharine Russell play the role she created 34 years ago (only four missed performances in all that time)! Manzi's play is intricate and deeply satisfying as a whodunnit x 5 (the number of murders eventually revealed)...
Off-Broadway can be a mixed bag. Some Off-Broadway shows are every bit as good as the major headliners. Other Off-Broadway shows are a step above Community Theater. PERFECT CRIME is the latter. The four actors are talented and capable (although the lead talks WAY too fast), and the story is diverting and well-structured (without providing enough clues for you to figure out what's going on before play's climax). I'll put it this way: when the play ended, I didn't ask for my money back, but I also walked into the theater knowing that I wasn't about to watch TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Hence the title of my review: if you temper your expectations, you'll have a diverting couple of hours.
An averge theater experience. This was the 3rd time I've seen it in 21 years. Each time the play was tweaked from the previous time. The actors spoke too rapidly and it seems that important details to the plot were omitted. I had to "fill-in-the-blanks" myself. It was a mystery and the plot twist was intersting but overall I wouldn't go again
Good story with lots of twists and turns that makes you think. Loved the characters. You can’t beat the price. Great location just off Broadway. Thumbs up!
Must see, excellent performances, clever mystery thoroughly enjoyable. Intimate theatre adds to the casual ambiance but remains totally professional. Bravo
What a great show to reopen Off Broadway. Thoroughly enjoyed it. All the actors and the actress are fantastic.
The plot was a little difficult to follow but the cast made it enjoyable and added the prope level of comedy.
