    Carmen left me cold

by Benjihank on 5/21/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

The set was interesting. The singing mediocre at best. Carmen never really evolved into a character I could like

    Strong Performance

by noparking on 5/20/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

This performance was strong enough to succeed without the typical formal staging and costuming of an opera. I appreciated the directorial approach and found the music to rise to a more central position without distractions. My family and I recommend this version of Carmen.

    Carmen was dreadful.

by notblissful on 5/17/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

I cannot begin to express the extent of how deeply disappointed I was by the production of Carmen. I had desired to see a production of Carmen my entire adult life. It is amazing to me that an organization as prestigious as Opera Colorado would sanction such a STARK production of an opera which should have been presented as the passionate work it has always been!

Good performance with minimalist setting and cast.

    Carmen

This was my first opera! I was astounded at the beautiful duets. I loved it all.

    Carmen rocks!

by motheropearl on 5/15/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

While it was unusual to see the orchestra on stage, rather than in the pit, it definitely did not detract from the experience. I quickly adjusted, and enjoyed the performance immensely. Took my 15-year-old daughter for her first opera experience, and she loved it too!

    Carmen was a miss

by Joey50 on 5/15/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

The lack of props, costumes and scenery was disappointing. I mean, that's what opera is about. The orchestra on stage was a nice touch, but it overwhelmed the voices of the singers, often making it difficult to hear the singing. More often than not it seemed that the actors weren't acting, but just singing the songs without a depth of feeling. We had gone to an opera at DU this spring that far surpassed this performance. We were expecting much more from an opera at this venue. Overall we were disappointed and heard many others saying the same.

    Where was the scenery?

by Anonymous on 5/14/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

Carmen was only the second opera I have been to see, the first was in Santa Fe. The singing and music was beautiful! I enjoyed seeing the orchestra but was disappointed that there were no beautiful backdrops. I had seen The Nutcracker at the Ellie and was expecting some extravagant sets for Carmen. While I understand the story didn't need the pageantry, I was disappointed and would have gone to a different opera if I had known. As an opera newbie, it was important to me. Maybe when I've seen many operas, I might appreciate the simplicity.

    Loved it!

by Lupitabens on 5/14/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

It was everything I expected. It was worth traveling 4 hours each way to see it.
