Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Josh Giddey, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first match-up, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center.

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

    More NBA in mtl

by Need 2 nights on 10/15/23Centre Bell - Montreal

As usual I will find a way to go to the game. However the prices of the tickets sky rocket it makes it insane for families to get tickets if you don’t get them on pré-salé which is where I try to get them. I think next year they’re should be 2 nights of NBA. We have the crowds to watch so why not. The prices of beer and drink even kids juices are absolutely insane and not even almost fair. Next year I will stuff my children before I go to avoid buying anything while I’m there if that is the price to pay especially in this economy. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. I will continue to come to the games as long as I can afford too however each year I will plan better to spend less. Concert and shows I say continue to charge your prices but on family events try to come up with family prices please. And maybe more sellers in the higher rows with other snacks other than popcorn. Thanks for bringing the NBA to MTL but please try to make it more affordable for the families out there. We pay so much in sports lessons for our kids we don’t want to deny them the chance to see their idols in person play ball!

    Fun and engaging

by Lowisss on 10/15/23Centre Bell - Montreal

My first NBA game. Fun, and fast pace. The fact that there’s always music playing, constant entertainment, the energy is high. A bit pricey for a pre-season game.

    NBA game in Montreal

by SportMom on 10/15/23Centre Bell - Montreal

It was a great event. Everything was run very well. Our seats were very high up, but we could see perfectly. Our tickets were bought during the pre-sale and were affordable. The players from OKC took the time to sign my son’s hat. They were a class act.

Great game, but pregame could be better.

by Max Q on 10/15/23Centre Bell - Montreal

Overall the game was great, I think everyone can agree on that. The thing I was more disappointed about was the pregame. Last year, there was a lot of activities and it was one of the best part of the night, so we decided that this year, we would arrive sooner so we could enjoy the pregame activities more than last year. Sadly for us, there was almost no pregame activities this year. I think there is room for improvement on this part of the night, there is one game from the NBA each year in Montreal, it would be nice if the event was bigger so people could enjoy it more.

    NBA should be ASHAMED

by NBA should be ASHAMED on 4/16/23Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

Last game of season and the B team plays. All super-stars that you pay to see play were sat out. If you are.going to do that then make the tickets 1/2 price. NEVER AGAIN. I rather watch College basketball.
