About

Founded in 1954, the Newport Jazz Festival® was the first jazz festival in America, and has been host to numerous legendary  performances by iconic figures and contemporary geniuses. The festival continues to present musicians who follow the traditions and modern growth of New Orleans, swing, bebop and modal.  The event is a production of Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. and currently is held over the course of three days at two of Newport's historic landmarks: the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino and Fort Adams State Park.

    Needed crowd noise managemrnt

by Robing247 on 8/7/16The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

Chick Corea trilogy was amazing. Unfortunately the noise from under the covered area to our left was ridiculous. There was this constant din of chatter nearly the whole set. Staff should have shut that down

Nora Jones and Chick Corea were super!

by Swinme on 8/6/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

The festival made it clear not to bring chairs over 30 inches tall. The signs on the way in stated that the requirement would be strictly enforced, so we did not bring our 34 inch tall chairs. Our view was obstructed by a chair well over 36 inches. Where was the enforcement????

    Beautiful setting, hot jazz

by PagosaSprings on 8/6/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Four jazz groups were playing at one time under four different tents, but you couldn't hear any other acts. It was a lot to take in and hard to choose which one to go to. Many musicians not on the main stage were as good as the main groups. There were water stations where you could fill up your water bottles. There were cellphone stations where you could charge your devices. There were plenty of portapotties. There was plenty of food vendors, though the prices were expensive. There were tents where you could get out of the sun. There were lots of details to make the experience pleasant. The only complaint I had was that the website said no chairs over 30" high. We took great care to buy chairs that complied. Many people had chairs well over 30". Some people even had extra shade tops to give them shade. We weren't allowed to stand, so it was difficult if not impossible to see the performers. I think there should be no 30" restrictions or enforce the 30" rule. Also, many people, us included, arrived early to get good seats. Then throughout the day, latecomers came and set up chairs in front of us wherever there were a foot of space, further restricting our view.

    Logistical nightmare

by CHMIAMI on 8/5/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Music was a mixed bag, with several artists bringing in new vocalists that were more of a distraction than an asset. Chick Corea arrived late and finished early. Apparently his bus got stuck in traffic. Traffic was an absolute nightmare. 10,000 attendees' worth of cars were put on a one lane road into the park; it took an hour and a half to get in on Saturday, even though the same trip took 10 minutes on Friday. They also didn't do a good job of keeping the paths clear of chairs, meaning that it was difficult to move around the venue.

by Algebra123 on 8/4/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Lots of good sets, not so many favorites for me as last year, but loved new Storyville Stage. 86 year old Japanese pianist was amazing, lovely music, inspiring story. Gotta keep going!

    About Saturday in Newport, RI

by MaryfromDC on 8/4/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Saturday's show was particularly awesome. First completely sold out show in about 20 years. The line up included: Chick Corea, Noral Jones, Secret Society, and Gregory Porter. No other show venue is more beautiful than Fort Adams. We bought our own chairs for first come first served general seating which worked out quite well. It was an amazing two days for us with blue, yacht filled water vistas, beautiful weather, and world class entertainment. This one was truly historical!

Secret Society and Scoence Fiction hard on the ear

by JohnPan on 8/3/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

How can this festival put these 2 acts on the main stage? This is Jazz at its worst. I have never heard bad jazz except for these 2 acts. Please find another home. Also the Saturday show was sold out. Please don't take credit because the crowd was not only stuffed so you couldn't even walk but there was bad crowd control and you couldn't see the stage from behind the footpath. The line was completely jammed. Not coming back for a while.
