About

New Orleans Pelicans History

The New Orleans Pelicans franchise joined the NBA in 1988 in Charlotte, North Carolina as the Hornets. They struggled until the early 1990s, when in a three-year span they assembled the young trio of Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson and Kendall Gill. With Glen Rice added to the mix, they made four playoff appearances in the 1990s, and started another successful stretch in the 1999–00 season fueled by guard Baron Davis. But after an unsuccessful bid to get a new arena, the team moved to New Orleans in 2002.

The Hornets made the playoffs each of their first two years in New Orleans, but after the third year they were forced to relocate to Oklahoma City for two seasons due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Upon returning in 2007–08, they finished 56-26 to win the Southwest Division, led by the trio of Chris Paul, David West and Tyson Chandler. In the playoffs, they beat the Dallas Mavericks in the first round before falling to the San Antonio Spurs in a seven-game conference semifinal.

Under new ownership (New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson purchased the Hornets in 2012), the team changed their name to the Pelicans. This new era was initially spearheaded by No. 1 Draft pick Anthony Davis, joined later by All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins, and followed by the pairing of 2019 first overall draft pick Zion Williamson and 2020 Most Improved Player Brandon Ingram.

    Perfect Family Outting

by CasTrim on 3/6/18Smoothie King Center - New Orleans

I ordered a Pierre Party Pack as a Christmas present for my husband and son. It came with 3 tickets (8 rows behind the bench), 3 food tickets, and 3 after game free throws. It was great to have a waiter in our area and the food delivery was very quick. I also like that there’s a separate restroom area for families.

    outstanding NBA Players

by folderking on 3/1/18Smoothie King Center - New Orleans

The gane between the Pelicans and the Suns was outstanding, fast-paced and full of extreme athletic ability. The two stars, Anthony Davis and Devin Booker, did not disappoint scoring 53 and 41 respectively. The venue, Smoothy King, was excellent.

    First NBA game

by jannshort on 1/5/18Smoothie King Center - New Orleans

We loved being at our first NBA game. Especially, seeing UK alumni. The facility was awesome, except for way expensive beer. A little upset they took my wine opener and spy guy mini pocket knife. Common sense has eluded us all. A person could do more damage with their bare hands. And the fact, they didn't have a place you could store the items. They said they were just going to throw it away. Pretty crappy. Seats kinda sucked, but that is all on Ticketmaster. App didn't work, long wait on hold, tickets gone except in the rafters. Pizza was good, Convenient location.

    Nice Event

by Liquidgrammar on 12/20/17Smoothie King Center - New Orleans

We are Sixers fans, but live in Kenner. We decided to go to the game, and were able to get floor seats, which were amazing! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience, and plan to make this a yearly event. We also have decided that we may even attend more Pelicans games because the venue was so nice. An all around great night!

Pierres party pack was a joke

by Steviemac11 on 11/25/17Smoothie King Center - New Orleans

I upgraded to pierres party pack for the pelicans game which was supposed to come with a combo meal! When i got there i found out it came with a hot dog and fountain drink.. neither myself or my wife can eat hot dogs and neither of us drink sodas.. we weren’t even allowed trade for a water! Not much of a combo.. waste of money! Other than that the game was good

by SenseiBoogiePower on 11/5/17Smoothie King Center - New Orleans

Everything about the in arena experience for the Pelicans vs Cavs gane was top notch! The Smoothie King Center has great sight lines from all areas of the arena and is a perfect venue for NBA basketball. The staff working the arena is always very helpful. I always enjoy attending Pelicans games at the venue. Go Pelicans!
