Finding the box in which to place singer-songwriter Neko Case has proven perplexing for the Grammy Awards poobahs, and just about everyone else. She released her acclaimed seventh solo album in 2013 -- titled The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You -- and promptly earned a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Alternative Music Album category. Her preceding set, 2009's Middle Cyclone, earned the Alexandria, Va., native a nomination in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. With her tendency to write folk-based songs with a bit of a loping beat, she's often refereed to as an Americana or alt-country artist, but her sound fits just as comfortably in the indie-rock singer-songwriter category. Further complicating matters is Case's longtime status as a member of Canadian indie supergroup The New Pornographers, with whom she's been known to belt out power-pop tunes.
Whatever you call her style, Case is a hit with fans and critics alike thanks to her poignant songwriting and her distinctive, smoky voice, which shines in concert. It's a combination that has fans flocking to buy tickets to see her on tour, where she's put the focus on the music while eschewing trappings like costume changes and fancy set designs.
Great Venue we will watch for more shows there and Neko and Co. were so great glad we skipped coachella to see her here.
She is the queen. Her voice is so perfect and round and whole and will send shivers down your spine. Her entire ensemble is amazing and funny. Outstanding and will definitely see them again the next time their in town.
Neko blew the house down! Her voice was spectacular, and the song choices were varied and lovely. The Orpheum was the perfect Jew-boxed setting to her show. The band was incredible, and I just loved every moment!
Great Show overall! Only minor downside was the fact that Neko had a cold but it didn't effect her singing much.
this is the first time I have seen Neko live in several years but she still puts on a great show. Hope she returns to New Orleans soon. Most of her songs in this concert were unfamiliar to me as I guess they come off of her new CD, which I had not had an opportunity to listen to before the show.I will remedy that soon.
I got my girlfriend tickets to this show for Christmas. It was really great, and we were definitely pleased. The show was at the Civic in New Orleans and we got seats up in the balcony, which is awesome. We were able to see everything. The sound mixing on the opener was pretty terrible, but it was obvious when NEKO came on that they have a sound guy who knows what he's doing. Her sound was spot on in comparison with the album. Great, relaxed stage presence. She was casually funny at some choice moments between songs. Played to best songs from her recent album.
The show was wonderful. She played a great mix of new and old songs. Her voice was clear and beautiful. I have nothing but praise for Neko Case and her band, but the sound is terrible. She is usually very funny, but we couldn't understand anything she said when she was just speaking. She deserves better!
Neko is fantastic, but my only regret is that she doesn't sing any of her New Pornographers songs. And she didn't sing "People Got a Lot of Nerve", one of her biggest hits. I'm sure she has her reasons.
Neko Case was as awesome as I thought she'd be and Thao Nguyen surpassed all expectations.
Great show...vocals were great...the venue was fantastic
I never tire of Neko and Kelly! And Jon Rauthouse is always brilliant.
From the opening song to the two(!) encores, this show was simply amazing. Neko's vocals are stunning and are reinforced by the equally-talented Kelly Hogan. Neko sang a lot - it was a long set of both new and older songs - and every performance was superb. It was fun to watch Jon Rauhouse effortlessly switch between various instruments. I would recommend anyone see Neko Case. She truly has something to offer to everyone, no matter what type of music you enjoy.
I have loved Neko Case for many years... She is bold, she is gritty, her voice is a great mix of gorgeous and unusual, she writes her own songs, she doesn't try to sound like everyone else, but, BUT, I was very disappointed with her show. It was tired, it was short and it was hard to understand/hear Neko very well. It may have been an issue related to the instruments overpowering her, but shouldn't there be some kind of sound quality control about that? Anyway, I still like Neko but don't know that I'll be dishing out funds to see her live in concert again very soon. At least not in a large venue. Her opening act, on the other hand, was a lovely surprise. Lucy Wainwright Roche. I've already bought tickets to see her when she is back in town.
Neko rocked the house. Great vibe got the audience totally pumped.
This was the first time I had seen Neko Case live. If you are looking for a great evening go see her. Very engaging with the crowd. Her band was great and that voice. We had a really great time.
The encore alone was worth the price of admission. 'Barracuda' and 'Crazy On you'??? A dream come true!!
I love this woman. Such a strong voice. Surprisingly sharp wit and just a solid, solid performer. Her set list is always a great mix of old and new and she's a total professional - even with a chest cold she can hit her notes and charm a crowd. See her!
The Orpheum is easily one of the best venues in the city (my other top venues are The Paradise and Somerville Theater). Neko Case is my favorite artist. So this was pretty much as good as it gets for me.
Neko Case and Lily Wainwright Roche were great performers! What a wonderful concert in a gorgeous venue.
Neko Case live is true to her studio work! She is very entertaining as she is incredible as an artist! She and Kelly Hogan together are truly amazing! And the band is top notch, doing a lot of double/multiple duty roles to make it all happen and come together! Wow!!!.....Is just the beginning of how awesome it was to be there! When she comes to Boston again, I will make it a point to be there!
