About

Finding the box in which to place singer-songwriter Neko Case has proven perplexing for the Grammy Awards poobahs, and just about everyone else. She released her acclaimed seventh solo album in 2013 -- titled The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You -- and promptly earned a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Alternative Music Album category. Her preceding set, 2009's Middle Cyclone, earned the Alexandria, Va., native a nomination in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. With her tendency to write folk-based songs with a bit of a loping beat, she's often refereed to as an Americana or alt-country artist, but her sound fits just as comfortably in the indie-rock singer-songwriter category. Further complicating matters is Case's longtime status as a member of Canadian indie supergroup The New Pornographers, with whom she's been known to belt out power-pop tunes.

Whatever you call her style, Case is a hit with fans and critics alike thanks to her poignant songwriting and her distinctive, smoky voice, which shines in concert. It's a combination that has fans flocking to buy tickets to see her on tour, where she's put the focus on the music while eschewing trappings like costume changes and fancy set designs.

    Neko better than ever

by DirkW on 11/19/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Just saw Neko Case at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, and 4 nights earlier in Santa Rosa at the Luther Burbank. Both shows featured Neko's exquisite singing, beautifully complimented by Kelly Hogan's perfectly enchanting harmonies, not to mention Jon Rauhouse on pedal steel and the rest of the band. A friend of mine described Neko's singing at the Fox as "flawless," and I can only agree. Neko has her own distinctive songbook aa well as her style of singing, and I was mesmerized by her during the whole performance each night. There's a mystical quality to Neko's performances that is once again very much her own. I got to sit in the front row in Santa Rosa, and I took advantage of the opportunity by focusing on how those gorgeous sounds come out of her mouth! Though I've seen her around 30 times, Neko Case still slays me!

    Neko is divine

    by mzimmer800 on 3/5/16Orpheum Theatre - Boston

Terrific, career spanning set. Disappointed that Kelly Hogan did not perform with the band but Neko was in fine form.

    Talent

Her singing only improves with time. Great 4 piece band with no drummer. Couldn't be better.

Neko was great, but not as great as could be

by Flickerino on 3/4/16State Theatre - Portland

The musical accompaniment was way too muted, and the lack of drums was sorely missed. Neko's voice is amazing and incomparable, but the show is significantly lacking due to the aforementioned.

    Neko was great, opener sucked.

by Rororecords on 12/7/15Apollo Theater - New York

Great performance by Neko and band (though perhaps it was my imagination but her set felt short). Soren Juul opened and could barely play his own music live. Unfortunate but typical of a younger crop of indie artists who lack basic musicianship. Neko's songwriting and voice were at their best.

Neko great in spite of poor sound.

by PeterOP on 7/7/14The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

I've been a longtime fan of Neko Case but had never seen her live before. I had high hopes for a concert at the Chicago Theater. Unfortunately, although Neko and her band were great, and the audience attentive, the concert was marred by sub-par sound. I was sitting literally a few feet from the sound board and was tempted to get up and ask the operator what the heck he was doing. The balance was completely off: Too much guitar (not Neko's) and drums, not enough vocal, and hardly any bass at all.

    Neko delivered the hits

by fredfredfreddythefred on 5/20/14The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

Good show. Not a lot of rarities. was hoping that since she has been on tour for so long that she would play some stranger stuff. Very solid set. Chicago Theatre is a great place for a show. She had a great encore too. I bought 2 beer coozies.

Neko Just a Little Bit Weako

by VoxLucis on 5/16/14The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

She clearly has a remarkable voice, and her down-to-earth persona is very endearing. She's also not afraid to take risks, which resulted in some of the evening's finest moments. I have been a huge fan, based only on a familiarity with the half dozen of her songs that have gotten significant radio play. Alas, her resume turns out to be rather thin beyond that. There is a repetitive quality to the way she structures her melodies, with the result that many of the songs end up sounding vaguely alike. There was also very little musicianship on display, as there was almost no soloing at all on the part of her back-up musicians. They seemed capable, but it's an act that's all about the vocals, and that leaves a bit of a hole in the overall experience. She worked hard. I'd give the performance a B-.

    Great Night Out

by Sfrajett on 5/16/14The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

This was a really fun date night for us. Neko's voice is lovely, and her band is professional and accomplished. She played a lot of favorites, and varied the songs from rocking to slow, full band to duets. My only criticism is that I wish she and the band had jammed together a bit more; the songs were polished but a bit bloodless, and definitely on a time clock. However, she did play several encores, and that's where the performance loosened up a little. The Chicago Theatre is a fantastic venue--ornate decor; good drinks; popcorn; and a casual feel. Very relaxing for these harried working parents!

    NEKO WAS BORING

She definitely was on something and was distracted. A truly unforgettable concert. Her voice is awesome but this concert was simply awful.

    Neko Case's best show yet

by ChicagoJosh on 5/16/14The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

I've seen Neko about 4 or 5 times now - including a couple of block parties. Each time I've seen her I thought it was better than the previous. I think she has grown a lot in songwriting and performance and this concert covered the widest range of emotion for me. I really didn't realize how much I like the new album until I heard some of it played live. I have to believe that she is acquiring new fans with each tour/album. I don't know what value radio play has anymore - but I'm guessing she's underplayed.

    Neko Case Memorable!!

by Lores77 on 5/16/14The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

This was my first time seeing her in Chicago, last time around was in St. Louis Missouri October 2013 and it was such a memorable performance. Neko Case, Kelly Hogan and band are phenomenal at performing together. Love that she interacts with her audience, i.e., jokes, and being just her plain witty self i.e., kicking off her shoes, forewarning on those words that may be offensive. Her energy is a very positive one and I'm so happy to have come across her musical talent. Hope one day she can offer a meet and greet, I'd pay to be at her side and her band members.

Neko and Kelly were great but the venue was...

by KristenSL on 5/16/14The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

This is my first time seeing Neko Case and she is a fantastic vocalist and her music is wonderful! Kelly Hogan is a master at supporting and blending and it was a real delight to hear her as well. My only hesitation with giving this show 5 stars is that the venue was just maybe too big for the group. A lot of the time between songs it was a bit awkward as Neko changed guitars and tuned them, which is okay in bit smaller spaces, like Lincoln Hall, for example. The show was sold out so there is obviously a demand there, but I would rather see her do a couple shows at a place like Lincoln Hall or even Park West.

One of the most talented artist you may never hear

by GenieG on 5/16/14The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

Neko Case may be one of the most talented and diverse artist that you will rarely hear on the radio. Mass media can't figure out what "box" to put her in, so they have left her out, which seems fine to her as long as she can do what she does and some of us stuble across her work and appreciate it.

    Beautiful Times

by Pio323 on 4/21/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

It was a lovely evening with the city lights shinning bright in the spring night. As we approach this theater there it was on the outside in big black letters as clear as can be "Neko Case". My first time really being aquatinted of the music, name, songs, character , and performance. It was a gift to my girlfriend which she has followed her music since her teens and the present. She's a big fan. As we walked into the theater it was love at first sight. Everyone was feeling good and it was understood that there was a something good brewing this night. As the first band came and went. There was a quick intermission . Then the performance started and within the first seconds of hearing Miss. Neko I knew then that she is a great musician, songwriter , proformer , SINGER, of our time. I'm into a lot of old music blues, jazz, folk , country, etc..... I was just glad to be there enjoying these epic moments of such a gem. Also I failed to mention that the band was really good and her back up singer whom complimented her really well as well as the band were beautiful.

Neko is beautiful, funny and her musicality is stunning. The backup band was rock solid. The dodos were a fine lead in.
