    Opera Colorado staging was awful.

by Musiceducator2015 on 5/31/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

The staging considerations for the opera Colorado presentation were terrible. When people sitting in the top three tiers of the Ellie caulkins opera house can not see the main diva while she sings the two most known arias, it is unforgivable. It almost appeared that this and other staging considerations were done intentionally and elitist. I am an avid theater goer and have never experienced the lack of consideration of the whole house. Normally, we sit in the orchestra, but because of ticket cost, we sat in a higher balcony. Although we are season ticket holders to the dcpa, we will not attend another performance of the Opera Colorado.

    A Dream Come True

by gebishop on 5/17/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

Six years ago, my then 3-year - old daughter became obsessed with The Magic Flute after hearing a children's version on CD. We were so excited when it came to Denver. It was everything we'do hoped -- great sets and costumes, wonderful performances, good (and often funny ) translation. Thanks!

    Magic Flute like real Magic

by nowbaby on 5/13/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

This opera was so much fun and enjoyable every minute. Mozart's music is happy and magnificent. The story is lighthearted yet motivating while the characters extremely engaging. I will never miss one of these in the future.

The Magic Flute was excellant !

by Olcy on 5/13/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

I enjoyed thoroughly the entire performance of The Magic Flute. All the performers/opera singers were amazing! Very glad I came to this opera. The only complaint I have is, any of us sitting up on the 4th level could not see So Young Park in two of her performances when she sang from a suspended platform. We could see her arms move and her costume from her waist down. That was disappointing.

    Magie Flute Was Not

by magpiepipes on 5/13/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

Digital effects overload. The poor queen was lost in the rafters - malfunction of the lift ? All you could see of her was the bottom half of her gown and occasionally her hands. Her song was lost to the heavens. The monitors used to translate did not work. Overall disappointing event.

    Magic Flute

Excellent, excellent, excellent. Very enjoyable. Great venue. Comfortable seats. The spoken English language with the sung German made it all the more enjoyable.

    Theatrical Performance Lackluster

by C0untryconvert on 5/11/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

The singing was wonderful. The stage and set transitions were very disappointing. It was very green screen the entire time. I expected more. The actors/singers did well for what stage effects they were given. The opera house is a beautiful venue.

    Terrible version

by wnezumi on 5/8/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

This was a terrible version of this opera. Besides the fact that it is Mozart, and therefore amazing, I wouldn't recommend it to anybody unless there is no chance of you ever seeing it properly, even on video. I will say that the singers for Pamina and Sarastro were both incredible, and it was almost worth it for that alone. But otherwise it was a mess. The digital aspect was poorly done and did not have the desired effect. The inclusion of random dancers was bizarre and made little sense. The talking was in English and the singing in German, why? There isn't that much talking in this opera, surely the performers could have memorized it. But the absolute worst thing was the choice to suspend the Queen of the Night at the top of the stage, a la the film Amadeus. It would be a nice visual idea if her entirety but her feet were not obscured to anybody not sitting on the floor due to a screen, but in actuality is completely unfitting of the emotional affect of her scenes. I honestly cannot believe the director doesn't understand this. The Queen of the Night is a terrifying figure to be sure, but she is also Pamina's mother. There is a necessary intimacy to their interaction as the Queen torments her with her command. That scene loses its intensity by placing the Queen away from Pamina, makes her less Pamina's mother and more a vengeful spirit, rather than both. On top of the narrative consequence, because there was a screen obscuring the Queen, her voice carried at about half the volume of the other performers' voices. It was just a frankly unforgivable choice. (And I won't even mention the shaky aria...) I regret wasting my time with this. It would have been more worthwhile watching the Royal Opera House version on YouTube.
