Rating: 5 out of 5by Inoshin on 5/8/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver Rating: 5 out of 5 Mozart's Most Popular
by KiwiPierre on 5/8/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverDie Zauberflaute is definitely one of Mozart's most popular, enjoyable operas. With many famous arias, lots of humour, and a happy ending for all, it is great music, acting, and voice. Opera Colorado does a fine job with this piece. The clever use of filmy curtains, with superimposed images, give the illusion of multiple elegant settings. There isn't a bad seat in the Ellie Caulkins theatre. This is a must see if you are in the Denver area! Cheers,
Rating: 4 out of 5by Maud23 on 5/8/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver A fine production with excellent singers--and the use of projections for special effects and scenery was top flight.
Rating: 4 out of 5 The Magic Flute was different
by bluestoonz on 5/6/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverThe new DCPA performance of The Magic Flute was a variation of the old and modern. Modern being the sets, which for the most part I liked-except maybe the dancers coming in and out to arrange. In some cases they seemed superfluous. Singing was great. I was disappointed in not seeing the Night Queen sing her vengeance aria-only her lower half was shown. What a waste of such talent –too artsy for me! The interjection of using English for some dialogue worked ok. I really found the whole segment of Papageno and Papagena confusing and disjointed-especially after having seen other productions of this opera. That was my least favorite part of the production.
Rating: 5 out of 5 The Magic Flute was Unforgettable
by trialdog on 5/5/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverOkay, so we all know the aria by the Queen of Night. but the rest of this opera was also amazing. The characters manage to make a silly little story interesting and understandable. The Pagagano character is a delightful fool for whom you root for. There are some incredible voices in this cast. You owe it to yourself to see this.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Mostly magic
by sopera on 5/5/15Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverThe Magic Flute by Opera Colorado was a beautifully staged and the effects were quite new and different. The singing was superb and the orchestra wonderful. The opera moved slower than it should have and the first half left many in the audience wondering what was going on. The opening scene of Tamino fighting the dragon was not dramatic and many didn't understand that the light show was the dragon. It was in fact, not exciting. The producer also down-played the battle between the Queen of the Night and Sarastro--the forces of good and evil. Much was made of a woman's role and the joy of love but I think many in the audience were confused and disappointed in the lack of excitement in the fight for good over evil.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Magic Flute was amazing and beautiful!
by Corbasse on 5/1/13Southern Theatre - ColumbusOpera Atelier's production of The Magic Flute at the Southern Theater was a wonderful match. The sets seemed to extend into the theater - each enhancing the other - and the projection of the voices perfectly filing the hall. The production was lively - full of wonderful music by Mozart sung beautifully by the Opera Atelier soloists, Columbus Opera Chorus and supported by Columbus Symphony musicians. The spoken dialogue and libretto by Schikenader was sometimes comic and sometimes progressive - addressing women's equality, racial bias, love as peacemaker, and music as a magical healing power.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Great Opera Experience!
by CintiCouple on 4/30/13Southern Theatre - ColumbusWhat a wonderful performance! We attended the Sunday matinee, and brought with us three family members who had never seen an opera before. They really enjoyed it (as we thought they might)! Our guests particularly enjoyed the marvelous harmonies of "the three ladies". Overall, the music was sublime, the performers exuberant, the costumes beautiful, and the sets were some of the best we have seen -- bravo!
Rating: 4 out of 5 THe Magical Magic Flute
by merrymcbee on 4/30/13Southern Theatre - ColumbusThe staging for The Magic Flute was amazing!! Although I am too cynical to not roll my eyes at the libretto -- I was awed at the way they brought everything to life onstage. That was truly magical.
Rating: 4 out of 5 High Notes and Low Notes
by Figarooooo on 4/30/13Southern Theatre - ColumbusOpera Atelier's Magic Flute is an extravagant production. The sets and costumes were colorful and the singing was excellent. Particularly notable was Laura Albino's impressive performance as Pamina. What detracts from this production is the acting. They appear to have resorted to cornball antics to keep the audience engaged and when the really dramatic stuff happened it was rather ho-hum. Papageno's (Olivier LaQuerre) singing was very good, but he became a tiresome character by the end and no one was convinced he really wanted a Papagena. The Magic Flute is a lot of work for the orchestra, and for the most part, they pulled it off well. They weren't always with the singers, which suggests that either the conducting was unclear or it was under-rehearsed. Or maybe both. Before the performance, next season's repertoire was announced, with the good news that locally produced shows are returning.
Rating: 3 out of 5 Voices amazing, acting and sets not
by N8andD on 9/11/12Devos Perfomance Hall - Grand RapidsWe are season ticket holders of Broadway Grand Rapids, so we are used to better acting and elaborate sets. There is no question that the cast is exceptionally talented with regard to their voices and we were very impressed with music especially vocally. The sets were very minimal and the acting was mediocre. We did enjoy ourselves, but for the money spent I'd rather go to a Broadway style show.
Rating: 5 out of 5 The Magic Flute is a "must-see"
