About

Minnesota Timberwolves History

The Timberwolves joined the NBA in the 1989 expansion that also brought the Orlando Magic into the league. The Wolves struggled during their first seven seasons, but the arrivals of first-round draft pick Kevin Garnett, general manager Kevin McHale and head coach Flip Saunders signaled a turnaround. The franchise earned its first playoff berth in the 1996–97 season — the first of eight straight years in the postseason — and its first winning record a year later.

In the 1999–00 season, led by Garnett and rookie Wally Szczerbiak, the Timberwolves posted their first 50-win season, the first of three straight years they reached that milestone. But it was not until the last year in that streak that they advanced past the first round of the playoffs.

With guards Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell joining the Timberwolves for the 2003–04 season, the team won their first division title and first two postseason series, eliminating the Denver Nuggets and the Sacramento Kings. They ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals.

After Garnett was traded away in 2007, the team rebuilt around all-star Kevin Love, but failed to make the playoffs during his tenure in Minnesota. They ended a 13-year drought without a playoff appearance by finishing 47-35 in the 2017–18 season, good for second place in the Northwest Division.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center

As the Minnesota Timberwolves play their fourth decade at Target Center, the arena is much-changed from the building that first hosted the young franchise in 1990. The Target Center has undergone three significant renovations over the years. The last round of upgrades were unveiled at the outset of the 2017–18 season, with a newer exterior and a three-story atrium over a new entrance, home to the iconic statue of George Mikan.

    Timberwolves Win!

by Marcburger on 2/9/15Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

The entire experience at the timberwolves game was very exciting. I was engaged the entire time. It was my first time seeing the newly acquired players the wolves received from the Kevin Love trade, including Andrew Wiggins. He is definitely a rising star and cannot wait to see him grow as a player with the timberwolves.

    Wolves Vs. Cavs

by DarcieB on 2/3/15Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

Best game in a long time!! Half time show was amazing, food was good! The only clmaint I had was that the seats we were siting in weren't serviced by the people walking around selling sodas, sno comes and cotton candy etc. we were in section 222 row A seat 9&10.

    Timberwolves/ Cavaliers game

by Sueb9 on 2/3/15Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

The game was good. Fun atmosphere to watch, closer than I thought it was going to be. We were disappointed in the half time show and the time outs. The past games we went to these down times were filled with fun and entertaining events with Crunch and other funny things. It was boring at times because nothing to entertain when the game wasn't going on.

This was the first Timberwolves game I've gone to, I'm not a basketball fan but my 17 year old son is and he had a great time, which made me have a great time as well. I loved the surprise Naughty by Nature half time show, I was singing, dancing, waiving my hand in the air like a maniac! The only thing I would change is it took forever to get out of the parking ramp. PREPAY like the Twins games, having to pay after the game caused major delays in leaving. It took us over 45 minutes just to get out of DT Minneapolis which is absurd.

    The T-Wolves are just awful

by BloomingtonChris on 1/13/15Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

For a basketball fan, like me, the T-Wolves are almost painful to watch. I went with my son and his friend, who both play high school ball. Even they were appalled by how fundamentally unsound that team plays, getting beat on simple pick-and-rolls, giving up points on back cuts, giving up lobs to 104-year-old Tim Duncan. Geez. It's hard to justify the ticket price when the product on the floor is so terrible, not matter how many T-shirts they cannon up into the stands.

    atmosphere win!

by Siouxpassion7 on 1/12/15Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

It was my first time at an NBA basketball game, I was so pumped and counting down to watch my first game against a great team! I was impressed the moment I stepped through the gates, very clean, lights, camera and action! It was my first official date with a guy as well! I loved the Timberwolves mascot he made my night! Honestly everything was prefect except one thing, for what I paid for seats I could barely feel at the game I know I'm not a millionaire so my dreams of on court seating were never going to happen, but as a broke college student I paid 85 dollars for a seat that still almost touched the ceiling, the theater wasn't even full and so many empty seats below me :( I just wish I knew how far away I really was going to be or I might as well have bought the 20 dollar seats :( sad day but now I know

    below .500 - still a good show

by tpups21 on 1/6/15Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

Been years since I've been to a Wolves game, brought my 9 yr old son to his first game. He had a blast - and even though the Wolves have a terrible record, they and Target Center still put on a good show, pre-game, timeouts, half time etc.

    Take what is given

by Betterdaysahead on 1/4/15Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

Regardless of the starters out--make free throws!! It is embarrasing and and very frustrating to play a team straight up but lose because we can't make free throws. If we have nothing else, I can not understand how professionals can be so poor in taking what is free. We have shooting coaches and people that are being paid very well for their skills. High school players have better free throw effectiveness than the Timberwolves. Despite an otherwise great show, our inability to make free throws put a cloud on the event and cost us the game.

by Darwin13 on 12/17/14Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

Volume shooting Kobe Bryant finally had enough shots go in the hoop to surpass MJ on the all-time scores list. He did get alot of help from the officials too.
