About

Jose Mari Chan In Concert

Although he has been crafting and performing beautiful and romantic ballads for a half-century — including hits like "Afterglow," "Can We Just Stop and Talk Awhile," and "Please Be Careful With My Heart" — Filipino singer-songwriter Jose Mari Chan is still best known for Christmas In Our Hearts. His 1990 seasonal collection has sold around a million copies to become the country's best-selling album of all time.

Chan first appeared on the music scene in 1966 as the performing host of Philippine TV's 9 Teeners. His debut album, Deep in My Heart, was released in 1969, and, in 1973, he represented his country in the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo. As the rest of the world embraced British pop phenomena like the Beatles, Philippine youths found a sound to identify within the clear, sincere music and lyrics of a favorite son.

But in 1975, Chan made the life-altering decision to move to the United States. He worked 11 years for his family's sugar business and eventually became its CEO. His passion for music never faded, however. Upon his return to the Philippines, Chan released A Golden Collection and, in 1989, Constant Change, which included the hit singles "Beautiful Girl" and "My Girl, My Woman, My Friend."

In addition to his romantic pop songs and ubiquitous Christmas music, Chan also had great success as a composer of commercials. "You've heard my singles, now listen to my jingles," he sings on 1997's Strictly Commercial: The Jingles Collection, a surprisingly popular collection of catchy ads he wrote and performed for Dial Soap, Philippine Airlines, and other products. Extending his musical reach even further, Chan released The Manhattan Connection, an album of swinging jazz tracks produced by Manhattan Transfer's Janis Siegel, in 2011.

Appropriately for a singer whose voice embodies goodness and generosity, Chan's music has become synonymous with the holidays in the Philippines. Nothing proclaims the season more sweetly than the sound of "Christmas in Our Hearts" wafting through stores and malls as early as September. According to a popular meme featuring the singer's visage, Chan dominates "the speakers in every mall." When you see him onstage, he'll dominate your heart as well.
