The set where amazing what they did with lighting on simple set was great. The quality of the actors and their voices was outstanding. When a part of the set (chair) broke before it was suposed to ther was no delay Constantine went on like nothing happened.

    Hit and Miss

by Riproars on 3/26/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

The performances by the cast were outstanding - especially the leads Constantine Maroulis and Deborah Cox - they made their characters real. Orchestra also great. The staging was inventive but not always on - sets that should have been out of sight after a scene were sometimes still in view and overall seemed constrained by budget - it showed. The play itself showed it's age - starting slowly and mostly staying there - except for the solos which stood out. I enjoyed it enough to recommend (especially at the 2 for 1 ticket prices) but doubt I'd consider seeing it again if it returns.

    Jekyll and Hyde

by cfreem on 3/26/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Voices were amazing. Deborah Cox is a Whitney. Constantine - where did that voice come from? Did not see that side of you on American Idol. He was truly scary as Hyde. The scenes with Deborah Cox need to be more seductive. Dr, Jekyll needs to make the eye contact more obvious and play it up as that song duet "In His Eyes" is phenomenal. Was easy to understand the words - yeah! A show worth seeing. Good luck in New York!

    Jekyll and Hyde was superb!

by QueenLeisa on 3/26/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

The performances were as expected - superb! Anything at the Cadillac Palace is exceptional, and this one did not disappoint. I'd seen Constantine in 2 other live theater performances, so I knew his talent was remarkable. I had not seen Deborah Cox, I'd only heard her music over the years. The pairing was an excellent idea - they exuded raw sensuality onstage - their chemistry was on point. The music is plentiful and the lyrics were key. Every performer was exceptional. The theatrics, drama, comedy, and stage presence of characters were all fascinating. I highly recommend this production.

by TLWilk on 3/26/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Constantine did an awesome job playing good and bad characters. The other members did an amazing job as well. The stage settings were very intriguing also. My friend and I had a wonderful time.

    rather melodramatic

by skivs on 3/26/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

The characters were hard to connect with. There is no doubt that the leads can really sing but the acting was not very good. Jekyll's accent came and went and was too soft to hear half the dialogue. Visually exciting, set was very cool.

The new approach to Jeklyll & Hyde is great. Constantine Maroulis and Deborah Cox are a great pair of voices, and they bring new levels to the roles. The production is stunning, and a great choice on the big white way!

From the very beginning the cast and the story line drew me in. It is a rare treat when you can say ALL the actors were great.

    Jekyll was not likeable

by ksuchomel on 3/25/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Part of the story was the good of Jekyll and the evil of Hyde. This rendition never let us see or like the good Jekyll. Also needed a stronger Jekyll/Hyde in the lead. Lucy was fabulous, Emma ok. "In His Eyes" was fabulous. The Jekyll/Hyde big number was very bad with Hyde being on a video screen.

Deborah's voice made the show. She hit every note and was on key! Constantine was fanastic too. He created 2 characters with ease.

Is there an antonym for the word "Revival?"

    by Review525 on 3/25/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

When I saw the ad for Jekyll and Hyde in Chicago, I was so excited. I was waiting for this musical to come to the big stage. I have loved the music for a long time now and own the Original Broadway Cast recording. I should have paid more attention to the fact that this was a "Revival." If you ask me, it was the opposite of a revival as they stylistically butchered the show. As soon as the overture was played, I knew something was a bit off.... I would describe this "Revival" as the Metallica rock version of Jekyll and Hyde gone wrong. Although I didn't see Rock of Ages, I imagine it was something like this. While this genre worked for Jesus Christ Super Star, it did not work in this case. While certain songs were rewritten with more of the "rock" quality, other songs remained in the classical musical style it had been written in. The Revival version seemed like a poor mishmash in which the singers' voices did not fit both styles. When Constantine (Jekyll/Hyde) was singing songs that still retained the more traditional quality of Jekyll and Hyde, his voice often sounded off key and he lacked the vocal musically of the Jekyll in the original cast. When Constantine when into this "Hyde" screaming metallica voice, it made more sense to me why they cast him in this role. Deborah Cox's (Lucy) voice, while very powerful and moving on the belting parts of her songs, lacked musicality and sounded hoarse on the more delicate softer parts of the score. Teal who played the role of Emma had the most outstanding voice on the stage. I would describe the "staging" as creepy, jarring, and too loud. As soon as the musical started, I wanted to turn down the volume (and I'm in my 20's). Each time Jekyll began to write in his journal I wanted to close my eyes and plug my ears because it was just so cheesy. When Jekyll faces Hyde in the mirrors, I felt like I was watching the Rocky Horror Picture. Costume wise- for some reason the maid costumes rubbed me the wrong way. They reminded me of the sexy Halloween version of a maid costume and made them look trashy. Overall, I was disappointed with the revival version of this show and feel as though the rock style did not accentuate or highlight the reasons why people initially liked this musical. Those reasons being the musicality of the score and the voices who sing it. I do applaud the producer's for taking a risk and applaud the case and crew for all their hard work.

I thought the show was very well done. A few of the artistic and director choices I didn't like but it was very good otherwise.

Great!!! (If you never saw the original!)

by JStay on 3/25/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

I saw the original play with Linda Eder & the rest of the cast so it really wasn't fair for this cast. It was my first musical ever & I was completely blown away. This play was awesome in itself, the songs were delivered masterfully & I did have fun. The music was a little more "rock & roll" though than the original. Bottom line: go to enjoy what it is, don't compare it to the original!

This was vegas not musical theatre

by AdamStachowiak on 3/25/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Director took liberties on the music tempo that made some the the scenes drag, murder and facade were awful and most of the ensemble numbers were poorly staged and sung. The only saving grace was the female lead's songs which were great however Emma had a weird British accent that did not match the rest of the cast. The guy playing Jekyll was too pop and not enough musical theater... he acted like he was singing a concert and not a theatrical show... it was pretty bad at some points... you don't expect Jekyll to have runs and vocal inflections... he is a doctor/murderer not a pop star... finale was awful and I hope they fix a lot of what is wrong with this show before it hit Broadway... back to the basics... acting, staging, and singing... this is Broadway not Vegas.

Jekyll & Hyde was campy fun!

by MusicalGirls on 3/25/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

I took my 11 and 9 year old daughters to see J&H. It was a great night at the theater, although some kids might find it a bit scary. My girls enjoyed the thrill. I had them prepare by reading the Wiki plot summary of the R.L. Stevenson original, so they knew what to expect. It was also a mature subject matter. However, as musical lovers, my 11 year old and I had a good laugh because we can hardly think of a musical without prostitution in the plot line (Gypsy! Les Mis! Gigi! Amer. in Paris!). So that doesn't bother us. Deborah Cox was outstanding! Constantine Maroulis was also very good. Note to costumers: please get rid of his Ed Grimley pants. I had a hard time finding him irresistibly sexy with the high waisted, suspender look. He has a slight build and I just could not take him seriously as Hyde when he wore that getup. Lucy would never have fallen for him! Also, Constantine, it may be time to lose the hair. I know it is your trademark look, but it was really distracting that you kept playing with it. You are handsome and you don't need it! Let us see more of your face when you are Hyde, I believe your acting is good enough it doesn't need to hide behind so much hair.
