About

This epic musical features the words of Abraham Lincoln and music inspired by the letters of those who lived through the Civil War. Through a series of highly theatrical vignettes, we see everyday Americans courageously confront the gritty realities of a tattered nation and a war that pitted brother against brother. Lincoln’s inspirational words intermix with these stories, imagining a bloody nation once again unified. Ford’s Theatre is developing this work as part of "Ford’s 150," a series of events commemorating the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s assassination

We enjoyed this well done musical. The singing was exceptional. We were a little disappointed that there was no period music.

    Freedom's Song

    by DataJo13 on 4/23/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

I have seen The Civil War at both the Ford's Theatre and on Broadway. This show required greater acting and easily met high expectations. Bravo to the director, and as always to Frank Wildhorn whose musicals are grossly underrated

    Powerful!!

    by 2Travelers on 4/22/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

My husband and I recently visited Washington D.C. for our 47th anniversary. We purchased tickets to Freedom's Song as we were planning a visit to the Ford Museum. Had no idea what to expect. The audience was captured from beginning to end. The cast was outstanding from their acting to their singing. The story line flowed with the music and there was not a dry eye in the house at the end of the production. This was so powerful I hope that everyone will try to see it.

The show was excellent. The performers were highly professional, talented, they gave their best at all times. The set was unique, creative and amazing. The show overall was one of the best in historical drama that I have seen, Highly motivating to young learners to know more about the people and events of the Civil War era. We were 3 retired social studies teachers from Baltimore County and would recommend this show to friends and fellow teachers.

    An Excellent Choral Performance!

by GoValGal on 4/18/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

This was more like a choral performance than a musical, but for all the songs and the amazing voices that sung them, I can not fault them for not having a dialogue between characters and a plot. 90 minutes with no intermission really only allows performance of all of these wonderful songs and that they did, very very well! But I thought for a moment how much more amazing it would have been with characters who had meaningful interaction with a clarity of purpose in between the songs helping to weave the story the songs told from beginning to end. There was certainly room to lengthen it and insert an intermission as with most musicals. The songs alone seemed to lack cohesiveness. Also, I nor anyone around me understood even at the end why the stage structure was creatively tilted. I kept hoping to learn the significance of that, but somehow missed it.

    Cannot be missed!

by Ederfan on 4/18/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

Talk about an appropriate musical to stage during the 150th anniversary of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and it would have to be "Freedom's Song." Beautiful music sung by actors that brought me to tears paired with the words of President Lincoln and you have an unforgettable musical experience.

Freedom's song was a moving experience

by Machiel on 4/18/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

I came to Ford's Theatre on the 15th of april, exactly 150 years after the death of Lincoln. I loved the show, the performance, singing, everything that brought one of the deepest darkness in American history to light. The drama and the pathos were real, these young men acting very well and beautiful voices. Being there in that historical place, with the balcony where Lincoln was enjoying his last moments of life, just e few meters right from me was an onforgettable expreience.

this play was fragmented and disappointing

    by phillygirl27 on 4/17/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

I attended the musical with high hopes. Unfortunately, after discovering that the production lacked a plot and main characters, my enthusiasm waned. The show felt more than a fragmented assortment of loosely associated songs rather than a cohesive story. Several of the main vocalists were grossly off key in every song they debuted in. Many of the vocalists were talented, however, these individuals were unfortunately not chosen as leads. The finale was baffling. The cast took off their civil war attire to reveal their 2015 contemporary clothing. They then hung their war attire on hangers that floated down from the ceiling. The clothes subsequently floated back into the rafters for display during the final song.
