Amazing music, dance, story. I'd recommend this to anyone who has any interest in Africa, African music or recent African history.
The production was great but Sandra- Michelle Williams I felt like she was out of place with the dancing and singing. Her voice was not as powerful for the other vocalist
I cannot even begin to explain how well this show arranged. The music, dance, and the story of Fela's trials and tribulations. All while producing a sound that will live for ages. I have read other reviews, and completely agree with the ones that say everyone should see this show. It is ultimately inspiring, and gives one a new appreciation for the music of Fela. Even if you're like me and have been listening to his music for years, one can still gain more knowledge from this show. The man portraying Fela is absolutely amazing as well as Michelle Williams and the entire cast. this show is very engaging and again I would recommend everybody see this show!!!
I was amazed by the dancing and the message. I was in college during that time but was not aware of the trials and tribulations the people of Nigeria were going through. It saddens me to know about the inhumanity to man by man, especially men of the same ethnicity. That should have saturated the news media but we know the message was not delivered to the world and we know why. I appreciated getting to know more about the struggles and I hope all of us who saw the play would spread the message to our friends and family. Unless we know history, we will be inclined to repeat it and on too many occasions, the negative side of history is destructive. Thank you for allowing this play to come to our area.
This show was over "micked" for the Gammage which was at most 50% full. Even in 7th row center, the echo made the performance completely unintelligible. I think some of these traveling shows bring their own sound people and speakers. If they did, nobody bothered to check the sound in the audience. If they used the Gammage sound people and speakers, ditto.
The only reason I am not giving 5 starts is bc of the ASU small stage that obviously constrained
Loved this musical-so much to learn, and appreciating the musical talents of such amazing voices was unforgettable. My husband and I loved every moment!
This was the second time I enjoyed Fela. First on Broadway and now at the AZ Gammage. The second time was just as great. I took my reluctant husband who declared it was the most exciting show he had ever seen. More enjoyable if you know a little background about Fela Kuti. A show you won't want to miss!
High energy, entertaining performance. Captivating story
Music, actors, dancers were powerful! Love the audience participation.
Absolutely Amazing!!!! The music, the dancing and the sets were wonderous.
I went to this on the recommendation of a friend. She said she'd heard it was wonderful. The first twenty minutes I was thinking, is this thing ever going to get interesting? By intermission I had planned every viable excuse in my mind to get out. I stayed as I'm a nice person and didn't want to ditch my friend but it was torture. I have to say, Michelle can carry a tune, powerful voice, though we did not get to hear her enough and Fela has a great physique. Other that that, not much to write home about.
Fela had a good performance. The cast was outstanding in their roles. Also the story line of Fela, was quite compelling. My wife and I always enjoy Shea's Theatre. This is a perfect venue for seeing quality Broadway productions. Kudos....
Really enjoyed the show and the music had me moving in my seat all night.
I expected better.. It was ok but not worth the money that I paid
Fela! If you didn't know of the name before you've seen the show, you definitely will know and remember it after. This show is the way entertainment should be. It captures your attention from beginning to end. This very talented cast presents with energized dancing, lively music, and awesome singing as it educates on the life experiences of Fela.
i heard of the Fela the man but new very little, the story line was gripping and needed to be told. thanks to the producers and the cast that deserves awards for this production. i would see it again.
It was amazing..Never seen anything like it. Totally unexpected perform, the whole entire cast was talented and in terrific shape.
