Unlike any musical I have been to

    by Ashmud on 6/9/13Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Great show. We were dancing and singing the whole time. I don't normally like musicals but this was a sensory party - combined dance, music, history. Oh, and damn their bodies are hot.

    Fela Lives

    by Inkosi7820 on 6/8/13Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

An amazing show. I love Afrobeat and Fela. He died before I was exposed to his music. This show gave me a taste of the life of Fela. He lives on in his music, his family, his fans and with this show. I want to thank the performers and creators of this.

    WOW

    by RexHavoc on 6/6/13Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

There is not much else to say other than WOW! That sums it up. I thought the first half was a bit better than the second, but it was an amazing show. The music was fantastic, the performers top shelf for sure, and pulling the audience into the story was fantastic.

    The play Fela is Exceptional!

    by Empowered on 6/6/13Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

The play was absolutely wonderful. The woman who played Fela's mom had an incredibly beautiful voice. All of the singing was very good. The energy of the play was soooo high. It was amazing the amount of high impact dancing that was performed. The choreography was great. The lead character as Fela was also amazing. He sang well, played that saxophone and... how could he possibly carry all of those lines? He did so quite impressively. The story is an important one, a good introduction to Fela and overall, empowering. Though I'm told there is much more to learn about Fela the man, his music and activism. I truly enjoyed the experience. The Paramount Theater is a beautiful theater as well, and the audience packed the house and we partied! I highly recommend this play.

As good as the cast and show are, the real stars are the musicians - especially the AMAZING sax player and conga player, who are out of this world! My only complaint is with the audience - when a show starts at 8.00, that does not mean 8.30. Please be on time. It's NOT OK to be "fashionably late," or to get there when you feel like it. Also, please put away the goddamned cell phones. It's distracting, not just to the other paying audience members, but to the cast as well.

    FELA

    by coyote54 on 6/6/13Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

I just went to the musical FELA- it was at the Oakland Paramount- I love the Paramount for entertainment & ambience- beautiful theater- great seating - the play was fantastic- more than I anticipated- I had no idea it would require audience participation that was different...- the dancers were fantastic- excellent choreography- African Dancing is very difficult and requires special hip movements and shaking techniques- these ladies and men had it going on-The Band was excellent- good music- Fela- the lead actor- in the play talked to the audience and engaged and connected w the audience- it made you feel like you were a part of the story. I recommend for all ages!!!

    Wicked Fun!!!!

by Moodyw on 6/4/13Paramount Theatre - Seattle

Fela! had been on my list of things to do for a while. I had wanted to attend the show on broadway in NYC but tickets were too pricey. I finally managed to go for the show in Seattle and I must say that it delivered! The dancing was a perfection of my 'West Africa Dance class' with more additions. And the vocals were from another universe!

    Fabulous!!!!

by RSJONESZ on 6/4/13Paramount Theatre - Seattle

The road production of Fela was absolutely FABULOUS! Even though it was a larger house than when I saw it on Broadway it worked here in Seattle. Thje energy and over the top dancing keep me moving the entire time. Invited a few friends to join me and they were blown away. This is what Broadway is all about.

Could have been so much more.

by Anonymous on 6/3/13Paramount Theatre - Seattle

The music and vocals were wonderful, the dancing was great, so alive, so energetic. The story itself is based on the real life of Fela Kuti, which should have made for an equally energetic and interesting story, but this is where Fela! falls flat. There was only the thinnest plot. The Fela character mostly monologues with only brief occasional interactions with the band and his wives all on stage with him. Those interactions were the more interesting aspects from an entertainment perspective. We do learn a lot about Fela's life and his experiences through his monologues (presented as if he is talking to an audience at his night club) but they are more like a lecture. As I said before, no real plot to move the story along. Just interesting information. I think this show could have been iconic and an instant classic had the writing been more inspired.

Awesome show. Too bad more people didn't attend. The lead was great. Story was one that should be told. Dancing throughout the troupe was amazing.
