DINOSAUR JR. IN CONCERT:

Dinosaur Jr. have a sound just as monstrously huge and playful as their name would suggest. Ticket buyers swoon for the monolithic volume, fuzzed-out riffs, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and passionate angst these alt rock legends bring to the stage. Long-haired leader J. Mascis blasts out masterful licks and pummeling power chords in front of three amplifiers that tower menacingly over his head, bassist Lou Barlow pumps out killer jams as he thrashes around stage, and drummer Murph beats up his skins like he’s hammering against an anvil. These monsters of noisy alternative are sure to rock out on favorites like “Freak Scene”, “Little Fury Things”, and “Feel the Pain” whenever they bring their ferocious sound on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The roots of Dinosaur Jr. lie in the Amherst, MA hardcore band Deep Wound, where guitarist/singer J. Mascis met bassist Lou Barlow. Following that band’s dissolution in 1984, the two reached out to fellow hardcore devotee Emmett Jefferson “Murph” Murphy III and formed a band. They dubbed themselves Dinosaur for their self-titled 1985 debut album, adding the Jr. diminutive later that year to distinguish themselves from a band of the same name. Their 1987 sophomore album You’re Living All Over Me became a major milestone in underground music, blending classic rock songcraft with outbursts of noisy feedback and punk angst. The band began to experience commercial success starting with the 1988 college radio hit “Freak Scene”, but Barlow departed to exercise more creative control in his lo-fi band Sebadoh. Original drummer Murph exited following 1991’s Green Mind, leaving Mascis the sole original member as Dinosaur Jr. continued to score hits into the ‘90s. In 2005 Mascis turned up at a Sebadoh concert to discuss a potential reunion, after which he and Barlow reached out to Murph. Since reuniting, the trio has released the powerful and critically acclaimed albums Beyond (2007), Farm (2009), and I Bet on Sky (2012). With their extensive catalog of old favorites and new gems, the group continues to be an earth-shaking force of nature at their concerts.

I've waited 34 years to see Dinosaur Jr. and finally checked that box! For me it was a life-long dream and it did not disappoint. In fact, it beat my expectations and I've seen many, many bands over my lifetime and they rank #1!!!!! Do yourself a favor and see them as soon as you are able.

    Loud but good

by Jill on 1/21/24Neptune Theatre - Seattle

Ok I forgot my earplugs so my mistake. Fantastic show by musicians at the top of their field. So mesmerizing. Appreciated the local guests (Seattle night 1: Dave Matthews, Seattle night 2: Head & Heart, Jessica from Deep Sea Diver who *shredded*).

    Joyous

by Kitkat on 1/21/24Neptune Theatre - Seattle

I have never been disappointed by a Dinosaur Jr show. This trio is packed with so much talent. Lou is amazing to watch—his style is so expressive, and his joy is infectious. The older albums are my jam, so the second half of the set was really satisfying. Oh, Jessica Dobson on Feel the Pain was a real treat; she can really shred.

Excellent concert venue and excellent concert by Dinosaur Jr. Last time I saw Dinosaur Jr was nearly 10 years ago in NYC and 10 years later they still bring a great energy and sound just as good as ever! I drove from South Florida to South Carolina to see this show and it was totally worth it!

    Dinosaur Show Rocks

by Count Dino on 9/25/23The Fillmore - San Francisco

The show was great. Lots of energy. Nice and loud. The band sounded great. Played the favorites and some deep cuts. What more is there it say. They put on a hell of a show. The Fillmore is is good place to see a show. It is a pain in the neck to leave the venue. One small exit for everyone to funnel out of. And then everyone stands right there waiting for their rides. That's annoying. Try taking the bus people.

    Good energy, poor sound quality

by G Dog on 9/25/23The Fillmore - San Francisco

J and company always rock out. The crowd loves them wherever they go. And, he's got great solos. Lou's always something to behold. The way he bounces around, it's like a 2-hour aerobic workout by a shaggy dog. Vocal mic volume was too low, though. Vocals got totally drowned out by everything else. Not sure if he's not confident of his singing. Maybe not the greatest voice. Vocals are purposely a bit apathetic. That's his singing style. Still, would have loved to hear it better.

    Great Time

by The Codemaster on 9/25/23The Fillmore - San Francisco

These guys are legends for a reason. They sounded great, very loud, but very on point for a band that is close to 40 years old. J Mascis is truly a modern day guitar hero, long live the Jazzmaster.

    Ear bleeding territory

by jolo on 9/25/23The Fillmore - San Francisco

A sort of make-up from 2022, as Lou missed the 2 shows at the Fillmore due to COVID. He more than made up for it with double the energy. Great set, sold out show.
