Boston Calling Music Festival is an annual arts and entertainment event that is held on Memorial Day weekend. Starting in 2013 and previously occurring twice a year, the now three-day festival hosts a diverse lineup of musicians and comedians along with local food vendors and visual art installations. Boston Calling began taking place at the Harvard Athletic Complex in the city’s Allston neighborhood in 2017. Co-curated by The National’s Aaron Dessner and produced by the Boston-based Crash Line Productions, previous headliners have included Foo Fighters, Metallica, Eminem, Paramore, Kendrick Lamar and Sia. In 2024, the 13th edition of Boston Calling will take place from May 24 to 26 with headliners Ed Sheeran, Tyler Childers and The Killers.

I thought the show as a whole on Friday night was very good. Sharon Van Etten was a good opener with a beautiful voice. I wasn't really a fan of the style/singing of Tame Impala as well as their type of performance. Beck was the highlight; he literally brought down the house and had everyone dancing- he's a natural performer.
Audio was horrendous. I could hear a blown driver 150 ft. away in the crowd. there was a lot of squealing/feedback. I left early.
All 3 days had wondrful weather....Plenty of food choices....Free Water refills! AND THE MUSIC....that's what it's all about! Great bands voices singers musicians!!! Thank you Boston for Boston Calling!! See you in September!
This was my second time at Boston Calling (the previous time being May 2014), and I'll be heading back in September. It's simply always a good time. And this was no exception. The venue itself--City Hall Plaza--is absolutely unreal, and the festival offers little perks that you don't always get elsewhere (water refilling stations, re-entry Saturdays & Sundays). A lot of people will comment on the flood of hipsters and "corporate culture" of it all--lots of tents offering free marketing perks, and it's hard to miss the JetBlue banners--and I'm sure that turns potential attendees off, but having those partners means they really can deliver on the lineup each year and bring out those big-name artists. The lineup this May was a refreshing mix of up-and-coming artists, big label headliners, and many in-between, but my favorite sets were certainly Beck, Marina & the Diamonds, The Ballroom Thieves, Vance Joy, and the always hilarious Tenacious D. I couldn't make it in from the very start every day--the perk of getting the pre-sale 3-day pass is that you can afford to be more flexible with time--but there wasn't a single artist I actively disliked. And the ones I wasn't crazy about or hadn't listened much to (Tove Lo, St. Vincent) ended up delivering great sets. All in all, it was pretty awesome.
The line-up sucked this spring compared to past festivals.
It's the must see music festival for Boston that happens twice a year!
I am embarrassed for this event that they considered what they offered a show of a VIP experience. The 'hor dourves' were freezer food tacos. And a small bag of chips and onion dip. For all the price I paid for VIP -- I couldn't even be treated to a soft pretzel and honey mustard - or any something from the fantastic food vendors that everyone had access to? The seating and lighting was pretty. And had it rained a roof would have been nice for the money. BUT... the acoustics were terrible so we had to go to the general admission area to even hear the show decently.
Tame Impala was AMAZING as usual and it's really cool to see them gain traction. Beck was also great - was not a terribly huge fan until I saw him live! Good call, Boston Calling! I took a star off of my review because of the crowd. They almost ruined it for me. So many people taking snap chats and taking videos with their phones the ENTIRE TIME! Is it really about the music anymore? Extremely disappointing.
Missed the first performance, but Tame Impala was mesmerizing, and Beck put on an awesome show - really knew how to work the audience.
Fantastic concert by Beck. Just wish I could have seen him...I am short.
Every thing was great. Venue, music, crowd, security. Only drawback was stage was too low. Couldn't see much from where we were standing. Even had enough portapotties, and they were clean!
The opening acts were ok, the headliner Beck was spot on and sounded like he did 20 years ago!
Boston Calling Sept 2014 was great. From the bands that played to the setup of the festival, Boston Calling continues to improve the experience. All the acts delivered excellent performances and I look forward to catching some of them when they return to Boston. The after parties at the various venues were a solid addition. This was my third of four Boston Calling Festivals and I very much so look forward to the next one. If you enjoy listening to music and discovering new music, do yourself a favor and come to Boston Calling.
The crowd and the music did not align well, would've been way more fun with a more diverse crowd and set up. Nas & The Roots might not be the best choice for a half-irish-american city. I think there could be more creativity with attracting a different crowd. Plus, you can hear the music outside the area for free, anyway.
loved the lineup and the experience was amazing. the staff were very much concerned with our well-being, always making sure we were hydrating, which was really nice. I can't wait to go back!
Decided to head into Boston for Boston Calling for Saturday and Sunday. It turned out to be one of the best weekends ever. The venue was huge, with plenty of opportunities to listen to some great bands but also enjoy food and play games as well. Everyone at the festival was chill and there wasn't too many issues. The only change I would make is not to have both stages together in one corner of the plaza. It personally to me felt a bit crowded. I would defiantly recommend getting a hotel room nearby and making a weekend of it. Definitely something I will do next year.
This was a rain or shine event but they evacuated city hall plaza for several hours due to lightening on Saturday (never heard any thunder so my guess is all the lightening flashes we saw were many miles away). Of course they need to take precautions to ensure everyone's safety. But their "evacuation" consisted of herding everyone into the street right outside the venue and I fail to see how that is any safer for anyone. Even though the weather cleared up quickly, several sets were still canceled while we were just waiting around outside for several hours, including Girl Talk and Volcano Choir. They finally let us back in around 9pm and Lorde played, and her set wasn't bad. Then Childish Gambino played and his sound/live mix was so awful we just left and went home after only a few songs. Overall the event was a huge waste of money. I'll probably stick to small inside shows in the future, especially if Ticketmaster is not involved.
So fun! Loved the vendors. Anyone could enjoy this concert. You could be in the crowd if you choose or enjoy from a distance. The turf field that was set up with Jenga and connect for was a blast.
The festival was off to a good start, but it was swiftly postponed (everyone was asked to leave) because of a little rain. Because there was no notification or estimate about when they would allow people to re-enter we were unable to come back and enjoy the rest of the performers. We ended up wasting our tickets and only getting to see one band. No refund was offered despite the cancellation/postponement of half the shows that day.
