Every year Ballet Hawaii seems to out-do itself. This year was especially great. 5 stars, mahalo!
Beautifully executed ballet with all the facets of the traditional take on the Nutcracker we love...and a new flavor of Island life expertly woven into the story, ballet artistry and costumes. We see the nutcracker annually wherever we are and this was wonderfully refreshing and so glad we saw it!!!
Going to the nutcracker has become a tradition for my family, and we have now attended a show for about 8 years consecutively. Most of the time we try a new show venue to keep it exciting and vary the cost of paying for my large family to go. Last year we had a hard time finding one in Hawaii, as I found out about this show too late. We did end up finding one, but my kids were disappointed that it wasn’t the traditional show they were used to and they didn’t even have “the lady with the big dress.” This year I splurged and bought 7 tickets to this show. I was excited, until I heard they had recently reimagined it into a Hawaiian nutcracker. I love the Hawaiian culture, and I love living here. My girls and I take hula lessons, we surf, and generally really appreciate trying to immerse ourselves in the culture here. However, I was nervous about a Hawaiian nutcracker, given the reactions last year to a less traditional ballet. As it turned out, this was one of my favorite nutcracker performances we have ever attended! They did have a Hawaiian twist, but it was thoughtfully and beautifully done, and absolutely maintained the music and spirit of The Nutcracker. Plus, they did have a lady with a big dress. :) Highly recommend! The only issue for me was that we attended the matinee and several people brought small children/babies. I could hear crying throughout the show, and it was bothersome to me because we had spent hundreds of dollars on this afternoon and I wanted to be able to focus and enjoy it. I wish that the venue would not allow lap babies and require a paid ticket for each person attending, regardless of age.
We ended up attending the matinee performance with all the little children. It was fun. The comments by the little girl ("there are the flowers again") added to the atmosphere. The performers were excellent, the set was amazing, and I especially liked that the narrative was placed in Hawaii. It makes way more sense to everyone here, especially to the kids. This is my first Nutcracker in Honolulu, so I didn't know what to expect. I've seen it it SF and NYC. I have to say that this is the best!
The performance was exquisite. My favorite was Pele's sister, Hi'iaka's performance.
The Sleeping Beauty Ballet was very lovely, the costumes were amazing,
Really enjoyed this Ballet. Choreography was well done. Costumes and color were amazing. Sound system very good, even without the live orchestra.
The dancing was superb! The costume designs were gorgeous and I would recommend anyone who loves the ballet to come and support this awesome cast!
It was a wonderful way for my teenage nieces to experience the beauty of ballet and classical music for the very first time! Mahalo to Ballet Hawaii for continually putting on their annual Nutcracker performances and featured performances such as a Sleeping Beauty with professional dancers!
