About

Jesus Christ Superstar on Tour

The musical-theater version of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice's hit 1970 rock opera gets the passionate revival it has long deserved when the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar comes to the United States. The show's 50th Anniversary Tour offers an emotionally resonant, hard-rocking experience that debuted in London in 2016. Director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie's cutting-edge production won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards. The 50th Anniversary Tour marks the first major revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in nearly a decade.

Jesus Christ Superstar Background

Jesus Christ Superstar originated as a high-concept rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice in 1970 and sold more than 7 million copies by 1983. Their account of Jesus' last week of life made its Broadway debut as a musical in 1971, dazzling audiences with its stirringly maximal music and minimal dialogue. Two film adaptations followed, in 1973 and 1999, and NBC aired a live concert version, starring John Legend as Jesus, on April 1 (Easter Sunday), 2018.

"This is not your grandmother's Superstar," Catey Sullivan wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times when Timothy Sheader directed the musical in Chicago in 2018. "Drew McOnie's choreography has the explosive feel of barely contained ecstasy, filled with flailing movements that evoke old time tent revivals where snake handlers spoke in tongues and miraculously cured the sick."

The 50th Anniversary Tour production of Jesus Christ Superstar stars actor-singer-songwriter Aaron La Vigne as Jesus, actor-poet James Delisco Beeks as Judas and Jenna Rubaii as Mary Magdalene. You'll shout hallelujah! during the onstage rock band's renditions of "This Jesus Must Die," "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar." And when one of the Pharisees sings, "One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is cool," you will take him at his word.

Very moving performances by everybody - music was great. Wish they would be in town longer so others in my family could go.

    It was somewhat interesting

by BillJ on 5/20/24The National Theatre - Washington

I was expecting more melodic music as it is a Webber/Rice score, however, with the exception of a few songs that people might recognize, it was a lot of screaming. The volume of the instruments vs. the voices was not in balance to the point where it was difficult to hear the lyrics. Good thing I know my bible or else the score would have been difficult to follow. The audience seemed to laugh at the most inappropriate times which was disconcerting.

    Dark

by Popper on 5/5/24Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

The dramatics where great, the music was a tad to loud where it was hard to follow the lyrics. I did not care for the theowing of the mic by Jesus. I gave it a 3.5, and would ask people to let me know what they thought, without giving my thought.

    Next time, sit closer

by wnybab on 5/4/24Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

We had balcony seats. To be honest, it was hard to hear the words. It was good that I knew the album and story. The last scene was excellent when they crucified Jesus, however, the angle of the light behind the cross was blinding in the balcony seats. I had to close my eyes. If I were to see this show again, I would try to get a seat closer. I love Shea's and have enjoyed many shows there.

    Jesus Christ Superstar

by lisa on 5/3/24Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

The show was excellent!! The only problem is if they would have opened the doors earlier for seating at the ground level, it would have alleviated much of the congestion.

    Amazing!!

by Liv on 5/3/24Peoria Civic Center - Peoria

Sometimes you listen to a soundtrack so much that you’re afraid when you see the show in person, it won’t be as good as the version you’re used to. I went into this with that fear and was absolutely blown away. The set, the choreography, the lighting, the music, the VOICES? I had high hopes and this still exceeded them, I would have seen this both nights it was in my town if I was able to. Absolutely everything was fantastic, I wish I could see it again.

Absolutely wonderful. All performers were top notch, but the actors for Jesus and Judas were incredible. Their voices and renditions of this classic work were so powerful. What talent, Bravo!
