by IWAC on 10/23/11Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesThe music of The Legend of Zelda is simple, evocative, memorable, and utterly iconic. Although there have been orchestral takes on these familiar tunes sporadically over the years, none of these efforts have boasted the breadth or refinement exhibited by these fresh new arrangements presented at the 25h Anniversary Symphony. The arrangers did just enough to embellish the music without losing the quaint honesty of the original interpretations, while the warmth and enthusiasm of conductor Eímear Noone heralded a tight, glossy performance from San Diego's Orchestra Nova and the CSU Fullerton chorus. Although there was a noticeable disappointment from fans who expected the presence of video game legend Shigeru Miyamoto, all was forgiven most sincerely thanks to Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma, whose modest charm and humor easily delighted despite language barrieres. The concert became especially poignant when composer Koji Kondo took the stage and performed a sentimental piano solo for the encore. The honor of having these two guests set what was already poised to be a magical evening well over the top. The experience went well beyond what occurred on stage. The event fell between the realms formal concert and a fan convention, with the organizers hosting raffles, interviews, and costume contests. Fans brought their 3DS systems in droves, playing games and exchanging data while waiting in line for the doors to open. Stepping into the Pantages' regal lobby, I found the royal family of Hyrule's heraldry adorning the walls while inventive cosplayers posed for photos and scores of fans made bee lines to Wii kiosks demoing The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Although the fan's loud overreaction to some of the nostalgic video images during the concert was a bit irksome to me, it was well worth it to have such a unique, good-natured community experience at this fabulous venue.
