Humble singer-songwriter Zee Avi has been making music that's as unique as her name since her breakout success on YouTube in 2007. Avi's sweet, warm voice has the ability to silence any room and her soothing ukelele-based songs leave fans in high spirits at her carefree performances. Plucking her guitar with the accompaniment of a backing band, Avi captivates audiences with simple yet powerful numbers like "Concrete Wall" and a lovely cover version of "Dream a Little Dream of Me" from 2014's Nightlight. On tour the songstress always leaves concertgoers awestruck with her charming performances.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Zee Avi, born Izyan Alirahman, broke into the music industry in an unexpected way: the singer-songwriter posted a video of her song "Poppy" on YouTube in 2007 that became a viral sensation. After the success of the tune, Avi posted a few more songs on the site but decided to call it quits the night before she turned 22 with her final track "No Christmas For Me". The song was another viral hit, garnering her attention from hundreds of labes before she eventually signed to Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records. Her self-titled 2009 debut secured shows throughout Los Angeles, where she played to sold-out crowds and introduced her music to hundreds of new fans. Her sophomore LP Ghostbird was released two years later to major acclaim, topping the Billboard Heatseekers chart and earning her opening stints on tours with Pete Yorn, Ani DiFranco, and labelmate Jack Johnson. With her 2014 album Nighlight, Zee Avi will have plenty of new material to perform alongside older fan favorites at her alluring shows.

All of them very different bands and many of them fun and entertaining in different ways. Bury Your Dead was fun purely based on audience participation New Found Glory was half the band and half the audience. But Zee Avi was pure fun just of her. Her amazing voice, energy and charm were all set to 11 throughout the whole night. She only played around 10 or 11 songs, but I left satisfied. And with other shows I have been to this year, I moved around and ended up everywhere in the venue. With Zee Avi, were I was standing was right were I was when the show ended. She captivated us with her energy and her charm. Every song song sounded great live, sometimes even better then on the album. Easily the best band I have seen live this year.

Had my doubs cuz the lead singer started playing the guitar semi-amaturish but then she started destroying it with skill lol. Violinist was stuff of legends. They have such a different sound. Kinda reminded me of something off of lord of the rings lol and whoa she could whistle inhumanly!

Played a great mix of music off her new record and plenty of "throwbacks" as she called them. El Rey theatre is a small intimate venue, a pleasure to watch a live performance in, BUT the show did not start till an hour after the doors opened and there was a full 30 minute break between acts, same setup between opening act and Zee Avi - really should not have been 30 minutes. We suspect that both the hour before and half hour between were driven by El Rey to drive up concession sales, a disappointment.

No amount of talkers in the audience (and believe me, there were a few) could distract from her great performance and infectious charm. If nothing else, her fans opened up my eyes to the potential of rude frat boys and hoochie mamas liking her music as well. Didn't think it before but I guess Zee Avi really does have broad appeal!

by Maj0926 on 9/29/107th Street Entry - MinneapolisFor starters, we weaited an hour and half past the starting time of the show to watch her and once she finally came out she was dressed very slob like and her brand crew was all drunk and wobbly. Overall though, her voice is fabulous but she needs to work on being on time and not having her crew all drunk and wasted.
