This concert was a magical blend of sounds at once both primitive and sophisticated- absolutely perfect for the outdoor venue!
The music was very good. We had lawn seats. The only complaint was the choice of the video on the screen. While the other performers were good, we went to see Yo Yo Ma, and he was very infrequently on the video screen.
I adore Yo-Yo Ma. However, I think the title was misleading. Instead of being "Yo Yo Ma with Silk Road Ensemble" it should be "Silk Road Ensemble featuring Yo-Yo Ma." I did expected to see more of Yo Yo Ma, and I was disapointed. Although the Silk Road Ensemble are wonderful musicians, I believe for me it will have to be an acquired taste if anything. I am, still, looking forward to see Yo-Yo Ma in the future, in a more classic or contemporary event.
How fortunate we were to have this amazing concert here in this area. YoYoMa is so influential in bringing together all cultures....there needs to be more of this type of experience for better understanding between people of the world!!!
This was a dynamic, cultural, warm and highly entertaining evening. Yo Yo Ma is an unbelievable cellist, but his ability to unite people from different cultures obviously is invaluable in this Ensemble. After all these years, however, the Ensemble is much more than Mr. Ma, and observing how much they enjoy each other as people and musicians was delightful. I was with three other friends and we would all recommend this concert experience!
This was a very personal and interesting performance. Many countries were represented by musicians and instruments, and the combination was very exciting and pleasing. The visual experience was as important as the auditory, however. Listening to the concert we went to without watching it, would not have been as successful for me. The personalities of the musicians really came out as they performed.
I loved seeing and hearing the different instruments. Some were so unusual and uncommon that it was really wonderful to my ears to hear them. They played so well together and I especially appreciated the percussionists.
Yo Yo Ma perfromance with Silk Road Ensemble was memorable! Unique performance!
Definitely unconventional but wonderful music performed with joy and gusto. A fantastic evening. And who expected an essentially classical ensemble to do three encores?
Yo Yo Ma and his incredibly talented Silk Road ensemble were nothing short of amazing. The arrangements were spectacular with interesting, often ancient, music. All of the musicians were outstanding, many playing very unusual instruments (or conventional instruments in an unusual way). If you have the opportunity to see and hear this performance, DON'T MISS IT!
I thought I was in for a night of quiet classical music, anything but, loved it!
I have seen Yo Yo Ma for years at Tanglewood in the Berkshires. He is a tremendously talented person and a genuine performer and contributor to the arts. This ensemble was outstanding and interesting on many levels, and it was a nice to experience this in our local area.
The night was filled with internationally inspired music. The ensemble was obviously having a good time which made me feel right at home. Although MR. Ma was the headliner you wouldn't know it by the way he and the group interacted. They were all "headliners" and handled their instruments with skill and comfort.
Bare bones concert Spent a lot of time filling with talk and intros instead of playing It seemed like they played just a few pieces. Overall, we thought the concert was really short And they started exactly on time when the car lines to park were still backed up Tickets were $70, we felt they were really worth $30. MAYBE........
It was the best concert I have seen in a long time! Anyone would love this!
What a gift that a world renowned classically trained cellist would use his talents and influence to create such a wonderful ensemble. This group of incredibly talented international musicians played music from around the globe on instruments from around the globe. They performed with such ease that they were feeling the music rather than playing it. Yo Yo Ma himself is charming and gracious. Although he played alone a few times, he was definitely not the spotlight of the show, clearly enjoying being part of the group. The only downside was the poor house management at CMAC who allowed large numbers of patrons to find there seats during the first 20 minutes of the performance which created a quite a distraction and obstructed the view to the stage.
At one time I would not have matched classical music with world music, but Yo Yo Ma has taught me differently. The Silk Road Ensemble is lush with woven themes of culture universal to us all, and leads us to a better understanding of our fellow mankind. The best way to peace and harmony is one person at a time embracing other ways of life.
What a marvelous concert! Lively, innovative...full of musical brillance! Many muscians; all very talented on various unusual instruments; the music was quite far from classical; it was international and entertaining. Mr Ma is just one of the musicians; and he did a few highlighted pieces, but otherwise, just shared the billing . Go..lose yourself in this very relaxing evening...
Outstanding !!! And the pianist was really incredible as well!
The musical selections were excellent. The entire audience was in awe of the mastery that YoYo Ma shows with a 300 year old cello. The crowd was thrilled to have 3 encores played.
