About

YO LA TENGO IN CONCERT:

Indie rock pioneers Yo La Tengo have brought a sophisticated edge to underground rock for the past 30 years, and they show no signs of slowing down in terms of creativity or quality. The band's eclectic sound touches on everything from meditative serenity to noisy punk aggression, and they're just as likely to groove on soulful ditties like “Mr. Tough” as brooding folk ragas like “Before We Run”. Frontman Ira Kaplan skillfully navigates these diverse genres with effortless confidence,  bringing insightful gems like "Autumn Sweater" and "Cherry Chapstick" to life with his breathy vocals, world-wise lyrics, and experimental guitar techniques. With audiences and critics still unraveling the lyrical complexity and musical diversity of their 2015 album Stuff Like That There, Yo La Tengo are sure to offer a soul-searching and heart-racing concert experience for ticket buyers whenever they go on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Husband and wife duo Ira Kaplan (vocals/guitar/keys) and Georgia Hubley (percussion/vocals) began making music together as Yo La Tengo -- Spanish for “I’ve got it!” -- in 1984. The Hoboken, NJ couple originally went through several lineup changes on their way to releasing their 1986 debut Ride the Tiger. The duo began to pick up commercial success with the 1989 release of President Yo La Tengo, which also kicked off a long love affair with music critics that continues to this day. The band finally settled on a consistent bassist/backing vocalist/multi-instrumentalist in James McNew, who joined the group on their 1992 album May I Sing with Me. The solidified lineup explored electronic instrumentation during the ‘90s, and remained fruitful as elder statesmen of the exploding indie scene in the ‘00s. In recent years the band has continued to experiment both on stage and in the studio, thrilling devoted fans and new converts alike as they continue to make some of the most restlessly creative and eclectic music available.

    Intense

by WeedLuver420 on 6/18/23Théâtre Beanfield - (anciennement Théâtre Corona) - Montreal

I got so incredibly high and had the most life-changing epiphany I’ve ever had. I genuinely was terrified for half of the concert but it all came to fruition at the end with a vision of my late grandmother telling me everything was going to be alright. Thank you Yo La Tengo for this experience

Wow what a great YLT show

by Steve W on 6/14/239:30 CLUB - Washington

What's NOT to like here -- an iconic band in one of the best live environments nationwide. It didn't hurt to arrive early and secure a floor spot up close. One of Yo La Tengo's greatest attributes is that every live show is different, as they draw on their gigantic catalog of decades of music -- in fact I was at their 9:30 Club show a few months earlier, and just 5 of 22 songs were repeated across the 2 shows. This show featured a handful of songs from their latest (and excellent) album This Stupid World, but they really reached into their back catalog too. The second set was OUTSTANDING, featuring Big Day Coming, Autumn Sweater and a 12- or 15-minute Blue Line Swinger that built slowly and ended with spastic guitar. They closed the show with a lovely "Center of Gravity" performance. Yesssss!

    930 never disappoints

    by SugarCube-Fan on 6/14/239:30 CLUB - Washington

Yo La Tengo was exactly what we have coke to expect and more. Similarly, the 930 club continues to allow artists and fans to have the best possible time within those walls.

They are as innovative as ever, making amazing music. And so much energy in the performance. Georgia is a national treasure, well the whole band is. Thank you Yo La Tengo, for your awesome music and generous performance!

    Great opening set.

by RedDog149! on 3/5/23Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Third time I've seen YLT and my least favorite show. Great opening set by all. Second set turned boring due to Ira's super self-indulgent feedback noodling (actually thought about leaving during "Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind." James and Georgia redeemed it in the encore with a lovely Velvet Underground cover in honor of Doug Yule's birthday and "Dreaming."

    Incredible show, great venue

by John Mc on 3/4/23Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Ira, Georgia, and James were in absolute top form. The musicality, song sets, performance, and energy were superb. I've seen a lot of amazing concerts over the years, and this one easily ranks in the top three all-time. The venue was also great (the acoustics and super friendly personnel especially) and I hope the band will play there again in the future. The reality is, I'll see them anywhere they play whenever they're in LA again! I've gotten so used to being disappointed by live shows over the past 40 years (even by my heroes). So I admittedly went into this one with a cautious attitude. And yet, here I am, four days later still buzzing with obsessive energy and joy -- yes, JOY -- from the show. That never happens anymore. It was that good.

    Amazing show

by g_girl on 3/1/23Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Perfectly intimate venue. We were up close and right in the center of the stage. Put us right in the middle of all the action. Band was incredible. Husband's birthday wishes came true!

    AUTUMN SWEATER WEATHER

by MATTMAN5000 on 2/28/23Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Fantastic Sat night double-setter with ‘I’ll Be Around’ & old fave ‘Autumn Sweater.’ Beautiful ‘Dreaming’ closer from the birthday girl GEORGIA that night as well. Band is still such a wonderful band to see live.

    From precious to sonic blasts

by MrVertigo on 2/27/23The Fillmore - San Francisco

I came a little late. The show was interesting as the band took a 10-15 minute break in the middle of their set. The first half was a little too precious at times with the drummers plaintive voice that one could barely discern as opposed to the guitarist whose voice was clear through the languid and repetitive melodies. The second half was louder and definitely got the crowns more up. Though, the squalls that some of the songs fell into got tired and obvious. Though the rhythm and melodies on some of the songs were gorgeous. The crowd, looked sold-out and was of various ages which was pleasantly surprising. A solid show but not great from a legendary band.

    Fantastic performance

by Ticketmaster should be nationalized on 12/27/22Bowery Ballroom - New York

YLT and Ava Mendoza killed it, all around just top notch creativity. They were great, the venue is great, I just wish that Ticketmaster didn't take the lion's share of the revenue just by leaching off of both! The ultimate capitalists. Producing nothing but shareholder profits at the expense of everyone else involved.

One of the best YLT shows I’ve ever seen.

    by F. T. on 12/27/22Bowery Ballroom - New York

Joined by the opener, a 5-piece jazz quintet, the band started in high gear and only got better. And Calvin Trillin as the ‘comic of the night’ was a nice surprise.

Yo La Tengo did not disappoint. May only regret was not being able to catch a a couple more of the shows. Talented veterans of indie rock and they blew us away.
