An Amazing Voice But A Wasted Night
by bbattersby on 5/10/10Silver Spurs Arena At Osceola Heritage Park - KissimmeeRating: 2 out of 5Wynonna is one of those performers I really wanted to love. She has an amazing voice still, but her performance Sunday night lacked energy and focus. Everything about the stage set up and performance was intimate and professional. The band was outstanding and the sound was clear and full. Wynonna started her program with a trio of her best hits from the 90s including block buster hits No One Else On Earth and Tell Me Why, Her performance abilities were showcased with her version of Elvis' Burning Love and although she obviously isn't physically agile, her voice is as fit as ever. She has recently released a new album of standards and covers. The Boswell Sisters "That's How Rhythm was Born" featured tight harmonies and a fun, crisp tempo. Equally stunning was the dark and sultry Tammy Wynette hit "Til I Get It Right" and Wynonna's vocal colors produced a luscious tune full of pain and hunger. Although these songs won't land Wynonna back on the charts, they demonstrate an artistry few country singers possess these days. Wynonna performed for 90 minutes including the encore, which is perfectly respectable for any artist. But unlike other A-list artists of her caliber I felt somehow cheated. I think her efforts to intersperse humor and personal stories about family and her mother sounded bitter and mean instead of touching and intimate, and those interruptions brought the audience energy down and caused interruptions in the entertainment flow that made it seem like she sang less. I found myself wishing she'd stop talking and instead demonstrate that first class voice. It's her vocal artistry that truly makes her a legendary performer, and the concert babble did her no favors in cementing her legacy.
