White Christmas On Tour

This Christmas classic is as much a cultural institution as Coca Cola or Thanksgiving dinner, and its music feels like it’s been around nearly as long.

White Christmas originated as a 1954 musical film from Paramount Pictures, directed by Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, Mildred Pierce). The narrative came from David Ives and Paul Blake, while famed Tin Pan Alley composer Irving Berlin wrote the music and lyrics. A star-studded event of the highest order, White Christmas starred Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen. In the film story, singers Bob Wallace and Phil Davis meet up with Betty and Judy Haynes to perform a Christmas show in rural Vermont. When they find out that their old commander from the war, General Waverly, is having trouble keeping his inn afloat, they try to help out by putting on a blockbuster musical show.

White Christmas came to the stage in 2000, where it premiered at The Muny in St. Louis as Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. It then played in San Francisco in 2004, going on to tour the U.S. and Canada. The show toured the U.K. during Christmases from 2006 to 2011, after which it saw a limited engagement on Broadway, running 53 performances and 12 previews in 2008 and 2009. In the subsequent few years, it toured the U.S. again, garnering acclaim, including two Tony Award nominations in 2009 for Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations. That same year, White Christmas was nominated for six Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Director of a Musical, Choreography, Orchestrations, Set Design, Costume Design, and Sound Design.

Whether you’re an old fan or new to these tunes, you can’t do much better than catching White Christmas during the holiday season.

The show was fun, the male lead singers and the dancers were fabulous. The lead female singer was just average. Overall the show was a ton of fun! But what ruined this show for me was the theater and the theater staff. The ushers were helpless. They couldn't tell us where our seats were and sent us from one usher to another until someone figured it out. Then I asked for a bill although we still had 1/2 hour until the show and was told I can't have one until I sit down. There was a bathroom attendant going through a power-trip. She decided to go off at my mom for 5 minutes because my mom, who doesn't speak English, couldn't understand her drill. Let me just say, a bathroom at a show I paid for is the last place where I need a traffic cop writing a ticket for me not peeing according to her rules.

    Why change a classic?

by donnatm on 12/18/10Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The cast did a great job! The group of us that went to see the musical are all big fans of the movie and we were shocked by how much they changed it. They cut out some of the best songs and added songs that made no sense to us. They even changed some of the characters names and stories. When you start with such a loved classic why would you mess with it. They even changed the ending! Although the cast did a great job I can not recommend this show to someone who is a fan of the movie. If you are not familiar with the movie I am sure you would enjoy it.

    Curiously flat

by Rsmroadrunner on 12/18/10Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Let me start off by saying we are huge fans of the Bing Crosby/Danny Kaye musical so the bar was set pretty high. That said, the production had some talented singers and dancers. The orchestra was good - hit all their points. All the pieces are there but the product is flat. No sparkle or joy. The adaptation skimmed over some critical plot points so the audience couldn't engage with the story line. Just OK.

    White Christmas was Wonderful

by Purrsfive on 12/18/10Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The entire play was fantastic. The acting, dancing, and music were a real treat from the 50's. What a way to celebrate Christmas by seeing such a terrific performance.

    WHITE CHRISTMAS

by Retired07 on 12/18/10Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

I guess we were expecting more in tune with the movie. It was just to jumbled up. didn't go along with the story. And the singers weren't the right ones for their parts.

    Don't Go!

by whateverlolawants on 12/18/10Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Well, while I still believe someone could have done a very fine job turning this story into a play, it sure isn't this version of White Christmas. The script was choppy; the acting and singing were mediocre; and despite obvious effort, the spirit and energy were nowhere to be seen. Chris Jones nailed it in his review in today's Chicago Tribune, which I recommend to anyone considering attending this play. My advice is "don't go."

by dpsthree on 12/18/10Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

White Christmas was a great show built on a wonderful classic. The quality of voice of every cast member was outstanding. I took my wife and she loved it as well. Would go again.

The show was just ok. I love the original, there were many songs that were not in the original and there were many scenes out of place. The singing and the dancers were great.

Bing and Rosemary they definitely were not. I don't think this would be on my annual to do list. But, it was a cute musical that left you with the Christmas spirit. The tap dancing was excellent.

    Music & Dance was magical

by Carmella01 on 12/17/10Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The singing and dancing was excellent and most enjoyable. I was just alittle disappointed with the scenery. Stage was dull until the very end and then it felt like christmas. Overall, four attended and we were all happy and filled with the christmas spirit when we left.

    This was no Irving Berlin!

by Notsowhite on 12/17/10Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

This was only fair for the money spent on tickets. More like a small performance venue. Changes made to the original movie plot were very noticeable and disappointing. Great tap dancing, but signing , well definitely not Bing Crosby! I chose this for our family's Christmas evening out instead of the normal Christmas Carol or Nutcracker, and we all were very unhappy that we had done so.

    White Christmas

by cannotbe on 12/17/10Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

White Christmas at Bank of America Theatre was wonderful. There were 11 of us (men and women - young adults and older adults). We all thought it was very entertaining and enjoyable. The voices on the singers were very good, the costuming was beautiful and the dancing was awesome. (and we were sitting in the last rows at the very top of the theatre off to the left side - and still were able to see everything). Recommend it highly for an lovely entertaining evening.
