Washington Capitals History
The Capitals were founded in 1974, but did not post a winning record or reach the Playoffs until the 1982-1983 season, when a group led by top scorers Dennis Maruk and Mike Gartner, along with defenseman Rod Langway, ended the frustration. It began a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive seasons in the Playoffs.
After that streak ended in 1996-1997, the Capitals bounced back the next year to win their first conference title. Led by right wing Peter Bondra and goalie Olaf Kölzig, they defeated Boston, Ottawa and Buffalo in the Playoffs to earn their first berth in the Stanley Cup Final. But the Caps were swept in four games.
Alexander Ovechkin arrived in 2005, and since 2007-2008, the Capitals have reached the Playoffs almost every year. The 2014-2015 season began a run of three consecutive years that the Capitals reached the second round, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. In 2015-2016, they won a franchise-high and NHL-best 56 games only to be felled by Pittsburgh, all the losses coming by one goal. They won a league-best 55 games the next year, but again lost to the Penguins in the second round.
The Capitals would go on to win their first Stanley Cup Championship in franchise history in 2018 when they beat the Vegas Golden Knights. Ovechkin currently ranks second in most career goals scored with 822 and continues to chase Wayne Gretzky's career mark of 894. Along with Gartner and Langway, Yvon Labre and Dale Hunter have had their numbers retired.

Amazing experience! Loved the virtual fireworks and the overall ambiance. Lighting could be better! A little too bright.
great time, easy entry to the event, and great fas
Excellent hockey game. Too bad the Caps did not win
My wife and I had seats in Section 201 which gave us a nice birds' eye view of the hockey rink. It was awesome to get our favorite Washington Capitals (Alex Ovechkin, T.J. Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Tom Wilson) take on the Florida Panthers in their quest for the Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, the CAPS lost in Overtime, but it was still a great game. Joining in the chants of: "Let's Go Caps!!", watching highlight reels on the Jumbotron, and seeing the team mascot, Slapshot skate around with a giant Washington Capitals banner made for a great time. Also, getting to Capital One Arena is super easy riding the Metro to the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro stop. Just ride the escalator up to street level and the building entrance is right there!
To clarify why I’m giving this 3 stars….it is due to the seating in the arena and Not the game itself. That part was actually awesome, since the Caps won! :) Given that my husband and I are big fans of hockey, we decided to go to the playoff game between the Caps and Panthers. While the game was exciting and fun, the seats were not! We had bought what Ticketmaster calls a ‘Semi-ambulatory Seat’ since I have difficulty climbing the (very narrow) stairs in the arena. While the seats are located in the row where you walked into the arena; they are just like the rest of the rows/seats that you would normally sit in. The space (walkway) between rows are quite narrow and the seats are not very wide. There’s really no place to put my cane safely without getting in the way of another person’s armrest and seat. Plus every time someone wanted to leave the row, you Must stand up to allow them to pass by. It’s extremely annoying and difficult for people who have limited mobility, such as myself and the other 2 people seating in the same row, one had a cast on his leg. There are other locations in the arena that is dedicated for wheelchairs and have actual chairs that allow for easy access and movement, but these seats are not those types. The nice thing about the our seat location was the view of the game. They were decent given they were close to one end of the arena, but not behind the goal. I could see well, without any obstruction…we’ll except when people stood up to cheer, which happened a lot. Lol! However, I was quite disappointed for having to stand up a lot more than expected, as well as the seats being smaller than I was hoping for ‘handicapped’ people; eventually I had to watch the game on the TVs in the main walkway area around the arena. I will say I don’t think I will buys these types of tickets again unless I have to. I might as well have saved me the cost of seats as well as the food/drinks, and watched the game at home or at the pub.
Saw a good game, ticket purchase was quick and easy. Food at the stadium a bit to pricy. Should think about kids discounts.
Always a great time at a Caps game. Arena employees are some of the nicest & friendliest I've encountered at big events!
Easy parking. Food close by. Couldnt bring my purse into the arena, but easy to run back to the car. Nosebleed seats but could see all the action. Wild killed it 5 to 1. Had a great time with my daughter and friends!
Had an amazing time. Great crowd and a special event that night. Awesome game!
Every staff member was fantastic and treaty me like I was a home team fan. The venue was clean and everything we needed was there. Great experience and would be happy to see another game there.
Refs blew the game, crowd energy was generally low, team did not play well in the first period but did make it interesting in the third. Energy deficit seemed to carry over into snack bar lines, in that service was pretty slow
Loved the game and fanfare that comes with it. Venue is great and thoroughly loved the game and the experience

Lived in DC for two years, always wanted to check out the Caps but never made it happen, so on my first trip back I had to pull the trigger and unleash the fury. Should have gone so much sooner. I had a blast. The only downside, as I'd never been to a game I splurged and got a seat very close to the ice. Now that meant that when the game was in my half then I could see everything, every drop of sweat, every thud as someone slammed into the boards, every flick of the puck. However, when the action moved to the other side, the plexiglass above the boards distorted the light such that I couldn't see a damn thing. Next time I'll just save the extra money and get a seat in the mezzanine, but I guarantee when I'm visiting our nation's capital again I'll definitely be back.
We took 3 grandkids to their 1st game on 2/5 Caps vs Kraken. College & high school schedules make our calendars difficult to coordinate. This game was exciting, gave us a bonus Caps Beenie making this souvenir even more grand, when we WON & Ovi added another goal to his belt.
I had a wonderful time! The energy among the fans was great. There was a good selection of food options.
We moved here from South Florida, where we used to have season tickets to the Florida Panthers, this was our first hockey game since we moved 4 years ago. It was as wonderful and exciting as ever. Even thou we lost, the energy of the audience was there.
We sat near a younger group of fans who as the game progressed became more vocal in their comments. I think all fans should be able to express their support for the CAPS in any way that is appropriate, but it would have been better if every screaming comment from a few of these folks didn't include the F word. In the COVID era, there appears to be less ushers in the arena and the ushers in the area around our section weren't very visible. When the only apparent option to address this is to text the CAPS Hospitality Help Desk and then have a group of ushers descend on your section and cause a stir, I would have liked to have a less obtrusive option be available (since in most cases, these folks were just being passionate fans).
Watching the caps in person is awesome! Can’t wait to go again.
