WAR IN CONCERT:

Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.

Great show. War has been around a long time, so they played many of their hits. They had great rapport and interaction with the crowd. The venue is small, but the sound carried well. Good show overall.

Really enjoyed myself. Had not been out in years. The show was great listening to music that I grew up on. It could have been a little more timely

The Dj was great but the headliner didn't show. We traveled over 800 miles to see Brenton Wood. He didn't show.

  • Terrible

by Worst time ever on 11/21/23Freeman Coliseum - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

Worst concert, it started 45 min. late and was extremely too long ( 5 hours) then to find out Brenton Wood wasn't even going to perform.

  • A comedian is not a singer.

by Cynthia on 11/21/23Freeman Coliseum - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

Where do I begin, headliner canceled along with other performer. Concert started an hour late after listening to some DJ on the stage for an hour. We finally got to see a couple of singers and then a comedian comes on stage I was irate, so I left I didn’t even get to see the rest of the show it was a waste of time and money. …..

  • Boring

by Gloria on 11/21/23Freeman Coliseum - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

Where do I start, I was so excited to see Brenton Woods as many hundreds of people whom attended also did. It was the most boring concert I've ever attended! Local bands did not play any classic oldies. They played songs nobody knew! The only good thing about this concert was the DJ he was amazing. 5 long hrs of torture nobody was singing or dancing. Then a comedian in the middle of a concert??? Um I took a nap hoping Mr woods would make an appearance soon. It was stressful . After 5 long hrs of boredom I left and so did many other people. I never got to see him. I was so upset. I don't mind local bands but they should have played classic oldies not non sence. Alot of people were upset and everyone looked bored tbh.

  • Catch you on the rebound

by Brando on 11/21/23Freeman Coliseum - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

Paid alot of money to sit up in the front to see the main headliner at the concert Brenton Wood and he was a no show . When War came on the lead singers mic kept going in and out enough for him to complain about it through half the set . Total šŸ’© show. Will never go to this promoters events ever again . So will not be catching you on the rebound punk .

  • Great concert and an even better Vibe!

by Concertlover on 11/21/23Freeman Coliseum - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The Freeman is a good place for a concert, not a bad seat in the house. Could use a better sound setup. The music wasnt as clear as it should of been. Other than that i had a great time.

  • San Antonio Concert

    by Evj64 on 11/21/23Freeman Coliseum - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

Overall, the concert was OK. The artist did great but the promoters could’ve done a better job of advertising and getting more people to the venue. The sound man could’ve done a better work. Also sometimes you couldn’t hear all of the instruments one thing for sure was the DJ did an awesome job thumbs up to him.

Great concert!!! Danced and Sang all night. The Tierra Group played music that brought great memories alive again! Lonnie Jordan is a skilled entertainer that made me want the show not to end! Lots of fun and a drive thru memory lane!!!

  • Story time and bad jokes

by Jaime on 11/19/23The Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center - El PasoRating: 2 out of 5

When they actually performed their music it was Great but they spent a LOT of time telling stories and bad jokes. I paid for the music not story time or a comedy show!! Would not go to see them again. Tierra was OK but lacking in stage presence.
