WAR IN CONCERT:
Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.
My first time there and I had alot of fun. All the bands were great to !! Everyone was dancing and singing along.
As always an awesome show. I’ve been seeing WAR since the 80’s. I grew up listening to WAR since the early 70’s.
Rascals we great.. war was truly enjoyable.. the love for what they do, is evident in there music... How ever worst venue.. just to get in is a nightmare.. only one gate open.. for the whole fairgrounds, and only from one direction.. using gps is usless
My husband and I were in 1.5 hours of traffic and parking surveillance, and ultimately had to give up. I’ve never purchased tickets to a venue where parking was impossible. What terrible planning by the organizers.
nothing but trouble with tickets on cellphone bring back print at home tickets
I love war , my hubby and I always have a blast . When ever they are in LA COUNTY we try to go
Attending any live WAR concert is an all day music affair just like the song. I was singing and moving to every one. Thoroughly enjoyed each band member doing their part in performance. Brings back good memories back in the day, especially the much younger times. This band will always be at the forefront. By now they definitely should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
We really enjoyed hearing all those oldies with Sly and the Family Stone,The Rascals and most of all War!!!!Very enjoyable night!
I’ve seen War many times in the few years. I also saw them back in the days. They still sound great.
Sunday night War concert was amazing there were two great opening bands Family Stone and the Rascals both had great sets and War finished it off with a great performance
We really enjoyed War! The Family Stone was good too. You can skip booking with the Racals next time...War really made the night!
The War concert and other performances was excellent. Great line up. A mature audience. My kind of crowd. We were up close and personal. The venue was open and airy. Seating was comfortable. Well managed and controlled. Staff was very accommodating and polite.
Great performance, would see them again great songs , great location.
Front row had no cupholders it was very cramped and tight had a guy sitting next to me and we were both the same size could not get comfortable at all the show was good but the speakers were turned up way way too high to the point where they were deafening couldn’t enjoy the show because of that next time will not be sitting in the pit it just wasn’t worth it and by the way not too accommodating for seniors too many steps to get to the bathroom not convenient at all
Venue was great, concert was fantastic, concession stands were awesome. I will definitely attend another concert there.
Family stone were great, sounded like they did in the old days. Rascals great too almost sounding like they did. War was awesome tho some of the solos ran a bit long
All the bands - War, Rascals, Family Stone - rocked it! Seriously great music, those older guys rule so don't miss 'em. Great atmosphere and fans, too. The Family Stone could've played longer, they sounded great but barely touched their incredible repertoire. As to the venue: it's a great location, has great outdoor acoustics, it's run smoothly even with the packed County Fair going on, but that *can of wine the concessions only had available is a bit cheesy, to say the least.
Saw WAR with Family Stone and The Rascals. Had excellent seats 9 rows back, dead center. Was impressed with Family Stone, had some nice danceable grooves. Jerry Martini still plays a mean sax AND tambourine at 80! My wife met and talked to Phunne Stone at their merch tent during WAR's set and said she was very approachable and nice. Found they share the same birthdate. Rascals were good and Felix still has a very nice voice. A little too 'groovy' for me and a little slow but still nice listening to some oldies. WAR on the other hand just couldn't get it going. Too loud, too much percussion and bass, and I'm sorry but I just didn't experience much musicality compared to what The Family did with less. Not that much of a groovable beat with lots of abrupt starts and stops and James Brown style horn wailing. We left after 30 minutes. I'd see Family Stone again if they played a longer set.
What a fun night. Three great bands that got everyone dancing and singing along. Family Stone got us going, Rascals had everyone singing along, and WAR gave us the perfect ending. "LOW RIDER"ended the night. Great venue to watch a concert. We'll be back next OC Fair!
Lonnie Jordan was awesome with leading the music and the WAR music band. His voice brings out the original music of the songs.
