WAR IN CONCERT:
Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.
Great show !!! the sounded great. the venue was great too.
Fiftieth Anniversary! Cali concerts from Catalina, Napa, thee Agoura to Music Hall War reminds you of the good true essence of instrumental quality. Congratulation & Kudos for maintaining a smooth ride through the years from eight track... to the future.
Just a bit too much stopping of music after song started, to cut up with audience. Because of these numerous interruptions, we did not get to hear “World is a Ghetto “, City-Country-City “ and others.
Great seats, great sound! War put on an excellent show! I truly enjoyed it. I would love to sound and move like Lonnie Jordan at 75.
One of the best shows I’ve seen in years! Took my 8 and 15 year old boys … they grooved all night! Catch them while you can… on fire!
I accompanied a friend who is a War fan, and was reminded how much of their music I loved too! It was a great show! Really enjoyed it!
I did good news is that the original voice, writer, and producer of legendary group WAR was in town with an incredibly tight band. In 90 minutes because of excessive jamming, they only did 10 songs. The songs were outstanding, but could've used a little less jamming and a little West chatter. What was there was excellent.
The Music Hall venue was perfect for WAR and the acoustics were on point for the type of old school music being played. They played all of their popular hits which sounded exactly as they did 40 plus years ago. Pure vocals with no lip sync. We had an awesome time. Cannot speak more highly of the performance of the band and 73 yr old lead singer, Leroy "Lonnie"Jordan. Music is not made nor played like this anymore. Take along youngster to let them hear what "real"music was like back in the day. Do not miss this concert!
War was Awesome!! So much energy. The sound was awesome.!! Hope they come back again!!
Well I can tell you one thing that if you’re looking for the original band members you’re only going to get one and he’s very entertaining and fun leading the night to a great time for hearing all the hits from one of the best all time jam bands. He’s 75 and still can move around like he’s 20 years younger but as long as they can still play and entertain I will go see them again.
I've seen War many times over the years. They're tight, melodic, funky, and harmonious. But the overlong solos, the constant hardening back to the 70s (I get it-read the room), and the drug references as if pot was still illegal. And, how do they not do World Is a Ghetto? That's a sax solo in the uncut version That's very tasty. War is a talented group of musicians. Just play.
The music sounded awesome, brought back memories from back in the day. I loved the percussion section of the band and also the sound system was very good. I just wish they would have sang more songs. It was great to see the original singer and songwriter still in the band. I would definitely recommend anyone to take in a night of War.
WAR was a blast from the past! Thought it ended a little early considering the time they started but it was a good concert over all.
With only one member still there after 50 years (Lonnie Jordan) the current group is comprised of experienced and talented musicians. They played their hearts out! Brought back so many pleasant memories!
The concert was great, they did an awesome performance!
The concert was great, they did an awesome performance!
I like to listen to the songs the way I remember them playing on the radio. A little ad lib is ok to bring a little variety but when it’s excessive, it loses its appeal. I go to listen to the group, not the audience participation. Enough of encouraging the audience to sing the song and let me hear what I paid for.
This was a great venue to see a concert. We sat 8th row center and the band didn't miss a beat. They were awesome. I will definitely go back!
Casino is very visit friendly and the security staff was awesome clearing up incident during concert.
Everything was fabulous and we had so much fun at the concert it brought back so many memories
