About

WAR IN CONCERT:

Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.

    Knockoff not original

    by Nostatic on 2/26/24

Saw them on the Detroit Waterfront free concert. They should have paid us to show up. When they finally came on, it was all hype and none of the bass lines matched. Riffs and drums did not match. Vocal lines did not match. This is not or ever has been WAR. They cannot play the originals due to copyright infringement so if anybody gives these clowns five stars to jam around for 45 minutes they must have been smoking the same stuff that they did back in the 70's. We left 30 minutes into it and a thundershower shut them down as we exited the parkade and drove by. God does not wear pajamas.

    WORST CONCERT EVER

by Concert Junkie on 12/28/23Freeman Coliseum - San Antonio

The whole reason for attending this concert was to see Brenton Wood and Evelyn King of which neither performed. They got some random acts that are not known to anyone in replacement for them not performing and to top it off, the intermissions were EXTREMELY LONG in between and the sets were very short. I go to several concerts every month and this one by far was the worst one I’ve ever attended in my life and horribly put together. Don’t waste your time or money on trying to attend this show, definitely NOT WORTH IT!!!

    the venue is great

by Ragtopw on 12/9/23The Magnolia - El Cajon

Ok, the tickets said 6:30 here; is the real rundown 6:00 outer landing open which is fine if the weather is nice. but the inner alcove is not large enough to accommodate, all the people 6:30 seats opened 7:45 (ish) show started. this isn't always a bad set up. but you should list all the times on the tickets. 6:30 is misleading.as the show did not start at 6:30. also. the merch table should be open and ready to rock and roll when the outer landing opens.

    Dem boys got down!

by Cup on 12/7/23The Magnolia - El Cajon

I love live music. MUSIC -- with real instruments. No damn DJs. That's why I love old school. Well, WAR did not disappoint! Dem boys got down. And they still sound EXACTLY as they did in the 70's/80's. You guys should do a concert with all old school REAL bands e.g., WAR, Confunkshun, AWB and other 70's R&B/funk bands that knew how to GROOVE!! That would be one hell of a concert!!! I'd pay to see WAR again--anytime!

    WAR December 2nd.

by Fun with Grandma on 12/5/23The Magnolia - El Cajon

Fantastic always 5 stars. I decided to bring two of my oldest grandsons, ages 15 and 12 to the War concert. They are familiar with War's music. I really enjoyed this concert. I have seen them 3 times in the last few years in San Diego. Their music was so impressive 50+ years ago and still is today. They never disappoint the audience, it is a fun concert too. My grandsons also really liked the music in person and want to see them again.

Alright at best after canceling in Houston

by Steve s on 11/28/23Freeman Coliseum - San Antonio

I bought the tickets for the Houston performance and it was canceled, so I bought tickets off the WAR web sight for the next closest city,San Antonio. Nothing was said when I bought the tickets about multiple other bands performing. We spent 5 hours waiting while other band we knew nothing about played, only to get 45 minutes of WAR. The songs the played were OK at best. Not as good as I would have expected. That was a very long night to see 45 minutes of the headline band.

    Totally Disorganized

by Tony on 11/27/23Freeman Coliseum - San Antonio

It all began with no one allowed into the facility until 40-45 minutes after the original entry time because the bands were testing equipment we were told. Two main artists backed out at the last minute. The artist who replaced them had great voices but their songs were slow songs which were putting people to sleep. Finally when War played they only played 3-4 songs and left! We all came to see War and for them to play so few songs was very disappointing.

They didn't promote the concert well.

by Raul on 11/27/23Freeman Coliseum - San Antonio

Brent Wood got cancelled at the last minute. War played 4 songs. They took a long time between sets. I blame the promoters. That I know of there was no radio promoting. No souvenirs, concession didn't have any food.

    Two Rude Women

by ABQ Mike on 11/26/23The Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center - El Paso

The La Plaza Theater in El Paso Texas is designed step. Two women refused to sit down the whole event, blocking the view of our whole section. When they were asked to please not block the view, they said F YOU. Ushers would not tell them to please let us watch. I can understand maybe a couple songs, but they stood the whole concert. Ruined not just our night, but all those around us. I wish I code upload the pictures of them blocking our view. I drove four hours to see the back of their bodys. Waste of money and time.

by Yolanda on 11/21/23Freeman Coliseum - San Antonio

Show was ok. I was really disappointed when we got an email the day before that the main headliner was not performing. We traveled from the Dallas area to San Antonio to see him and he was a no show. Not cool....

by Chris C on 11/21/23The Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center - El Paso

Great show. War has been around a long time, so they played many of their hits. They had great rapport and interaction with the crowd. The venue is small, but the sound carried well. Good show overall.
