From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, comes a hot new Broadway musical that bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Inspired by actual events, Memphis is about a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical,Memphis features an original score by Bon Jovi's David Bryan that evokes the powerhouse funk of James Brown, the hot guitar riffs of Chuck Berry, the smooth harmonies of the Temptations and the silken, bouncy pop of the great girl groups of the period. Turn up that dial! It's time for Broadway's roof-raising rock 'n' roll musical, Memphis!

The energy and acting was great. The story line was more than expected and the voices were terrific.
One of the best musicals we've seen in a long time. The cast was perfect and so, so talented. Really hated to see it end. As huge fans of the blues, we were blown away.
Hearing rave reviews for years for Memphis, I was looking forward to enjoying the excitement, dance, and song. Friends claimed that the spirit of the music and singing would go right through me leaving me in a naturally happy state for days. But instead, I saw a nice play done by talented actors with good voices and dynamic dance ability. However, the sound system at the Walnut street theater under delivers. Sitting in the orchestra not far from the stage, I had to struggle to hear the lead singer's voices. The experience was reminiscent of a local or high school play production as opposed to a professional theater where the sound resonates through the room and connects with your soul. My apologies to the performers.
What an amazing cast of singers and dancers. This is one show I will recommend to friends.
The play portrays racial and religious attitudes in Memphis starting around 1951 in both black and white communities. Through the use of music and an improbable love story, we witness the changes that we went through as a society, sometimes painful and sometimes joyous, as we progressed through the days of radio and the early days of television. Interspersed with humor and suspense, the story keeps our interest to the end, while the music builds in intensity and we experience the process of becoming a society with a common musical culture.
This show is amazing! Great music, dancing and an unforgettable story line! Go and see it!
