About

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it's apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how Loveletting was born".

Loveletting, the first single off VV's debut album 'Neon Noir' out in early 2023, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music's most distinctive and intriguing voices. It belongs to the same forlorn world of woe and whimsy once conceived and governed by Valo in HIM, but with the nuanced notes of a fine aged Cabernet.

"Artistically speaking the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It's the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn't want to witness that?"

Throughout their career, VV has drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like Theatre of Living Arts, the Depot and Summit to capacity.

  • H.I.M. @ the Pagent

by poisonxgurlx on 4/12/10The Pagent - St. LouisRating: 5 out of 5

This show was amazing! All the opening acts did wonderfuly, & I got to speak with the lead singer of each band, which was great. H.I.M. gave an incredible performance, this was my second time seeing them in concert, and I was blown away. Ville who usually walks out on stage at the last moment, walked out with the band, and they all seemed excited to be there. He was very sociable with the crowd, and the band as a whole rocked for almost 3 hours straight. The other fans were just as pumped as I was, and screaming for them to come back on stage, when they took a short break. I pushed my way to the front of the stage at one point during the show, and I was literally only a few feet from the band, because of how the venue was setup. It was a great concert, I had the best time. The lighting did make it a little difficult to get good pics, but we came away with some decent shots from the concert, reguardless. I would highly recommend seeing this show to anyone.

  • A phenomenal performance by HIM!

This show was yet another reminder as to why HIM has been my favorite band for seven years. This is the fifth HIM concert I've been to, and they just keep getting better. The instruments were incredible, and Ville Valo's vocal range was nothing short of godly. The set list was a good span of the band's career, taking fans back as well as a great intro to their most recent album. Kudos, guys, keep rocking us!

Ville's Voice was in top shape, Mige's Bass was banging, Linde's AMAZING Talent of Guitar playing was in full force, Burton's perfect piano playing was great, and Gas lit the house on FIRE with his drumsticks!!! I have been a HIM fan for years and this was totally worth the wait to see! Not only was HIM amazing, like I knew they would be, but I got turned on to another band I had never heard of. I am now a huge Dommin fan and can not wait to see them again the next time they come through the St. Louis area.

  • HIM w/We are the fallen @ The Rave!

    by Jayceace23 on 4/11/10Eagles Club/The Rave/Eagles Ballroom - MilwaukeeRating: 4 out of 5

On Saturday 4/10/10 HIM returned to the Rave in Milwaukee, WI with a searing 15 song set that included most of their crowd pleasing songs, and several choice cuts from the new album "Screamworks: Love & Theory in practice". Along with HIM was Drive A, Dommin, and We are the Fallen. We arrived several songs into Dommin's set and after procuring the necessary 8 dollar beer and amazing view from the Balcony we settled into enjoy the show. The final 3 songs of Dommin's set was melodic & tight complete with syncronized headbanging (new olympic sport anyone?!?)---- which although slightly cheesy, showed off the fact that the band was enjoying themselves & were truly grateful to be on tour with HIM. Their most memorable moment was a surprisingly heavy rendition of Cutting Crew's "I just died in your arms tonight". Next up was We Are the Fallen who's forthcoming debut album "Tear the World Down" drops on 5/11/10. This band was the perfect opener for HIM's brand of hook-filled melancholy. We are the Fallen ( comprised of original Evanescence guitarists Ben Moody & John LeCompt + Bassist Marty O'Brien + drummer Rocky Gray with American Idol Vocalist Carly Smithson) ---picks up right where Evanescence left a gaping hole in the hard rock music scene that many bands have tried but not yet managed to completely fill. As one would expect with the duo of Moody & LeCompt the guitar playing was soaringly precise. When coupled with the canyon spanning vocals of Smithson, together they evoked lush, ever-evolving sonic landscapes with evocative moments of melancholy emotion. They even tried an ambitiously hard cover of Madonna's hit song "Like a Prayer" that had it's moments, but overall left this listener feeling as though the song choice could have been better. The highlight of their set in my opinion was definitely 1st single "Bury Me Alive", a haunting tale of having ones hands tied while watching the one you love recede into a nightmarish self destruction. Finally it was time for HIM to hit the stage and from the opening notes it was clear who the crowd was there to see. This is my 3rd time seeing HIM live and they have yet to fail to deliver an aurally pleasing set. During this show their musicianship was on full display-------from the pouding groove of drummer Gas Karppinen, to the searing solos of guitarist Linde Lindstrom to the always amazing vocals of Ville Valo----- HIM delivered an impressive experience for the ears. Set highlights included a rocking rendition of "Right Here in these Arms" & an atmospheric, inspiring version of "Join Me" both from the HIM classic album Razorblade Romance. Some other standouts songs included a pummeling "Buried Alive by Love" & stunning cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game"--Long a HIM standard (The song was even included as track #6 on the US edition of Razorblade Romance) live this song took on a life of it's own buyoed by the crowds energy and Valos seductive songcraft----Guitarist Linde stepped up and made the moment magical with a solo that many in attendence likely felt would melt the neck on his guitar. The solo that was formed, for me, brought to mind wisps of Bon Jovi's Sambora and Former GNR Guitar God Slash at their finest wrapped in a finely prepared coat of beautifully tragic melody. All night Valo held court from center stage, effortlessly swaying and moving as the songs moved him, looking neither hurried nor bored keeping his subjects spellbound especially when he let his voice ascend into the stratosphere. Overall the night was a highly entertaining one, and one I would not hesitate to recommend. HIM definitely delivers!

  • HIM, DOMMIN fantastic

    by Wendyw18 on 4/11/10Eagles Club/The Rave/Eagles Ballroom - MilwaukeeRating: 5 out of 5

Overall the show was great. Was there to see HIM but now a loyal fan of Dommin. Got to meet the boys as well. Grand bunch of guys. Only problem was it was hard to hear the lead singer of We Are The Fallen, the guitars were too loud. Little hard to hear Ville as well sometimes.

This was the first show I had been to and I thought it was awesome. I had a great time other than the jerk who came and stood right infront of me. I can't wait to see HIM again!

  • by 473x4ndr4 on 4/10/10House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The line-up was Drive A, Dommin, We Are the Fallen and H.I.M. For once, the opening acts where amazing. Drive A is a punk-anarchist band with great potential and an angsty attitude. Dommin is a beautiful sound. The lead singers voice is rich and effective, and the band-members where great. H.I.M. did a great audience, and Ville Valo was really interactive with the audience. Very good in a small venue, got to meet the first two intro acts, was definitely worth going to!

  • HIM

Was totally disapointed....was soo better 5years ago. Seems he lost his edge and way with the audience. Perhaps he should start smoking again. Dommin was amazing...they were the show.! BTW my frinds saw HIM in cleveland an feel the same...lame ass performence.

  • I LOVE HIM!!!

by spicylady on 4/9/10Club Zoo - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

HIM are my fave band, I was so excited to see them and they were great!! My only complaint is I wish they would retire "Wicked Game" already, do they really have to do it at EVERY show??? I'd much rather hear "Your Sweet 666", "Vampire Heart", or "It's all Tears". But I was thrilled they played "Scared to Death" instead of "WLADE" because they played that when I saw them in Cleveland, that was the only setlist switch. I would love to see them in every city!! Unfortunately that's not possible, but I am glad I got to see them twice and both times were great!! Oh, and Ville did an awful lot of talking between songs but I could not hear a word he said. Maybe it's cause I'm old and my ears are shot? I wish I coulda heard him!! And I wish he woulda took off that hat and jacket, it was hot as hell in that club, I don't know how or why he kept that hat and jacket on. Everyone should see HIM live, because they're great!!

  • HIM at Club Zoo

by GinnyRose on 4/9/10Club Zoo - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

HIM has been my favorite band for years and when I finally got to see them for the first time at Club Zoo they did not disappoint. They were sonically amazing. Even with sound problems in the beginning they still rocked. Ville's voice was flawless and Linde is possibly one of the best guitarist in rock. They are an incredible band that does not get the credit they deserve in the states. So sad. I will be seeing them the next time they come to town for sure. No matter the cost.

  • Amazing night!

by Anonymous on 4/9/10Orbit Room - Grand RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

The opening bands were great. It's my third time seeing Drive A and they only reinforced my love for their music. Though they were definitely the odd ones out in the lineup, they did an amazing job getting me pumped for the rest of the show. Dommin, let’s just say that they are one of my new favorite bands. Their sound was eerie and incredible. We Are the Fallen was alright, and HIM was utterly amazing. I enjoyed every second that they were on stage. I would definitely see them again. Overall, an unforgettable night.

  • H.I.M headlined but Dommin stoled the show!!

    by Szudy27 on 4/8/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

Drive A, Dommin, We are the Fallen, and my favorite band HIM!!!!! Drive A was the worst band I have ever seen or heard. SUCKED!!! DOMMIN are rock Gods!!! Beefy and very handsome too :) We are the Fallen - mixed emotions there. Pretty good live show. Will buy their album but she should find her own sound. HIM need i say more :) Valo acted bored by the whole thing. I didn't see him look at the front row once. Otherwise they were great. Lots of technical difficulties.

  • great show.

i didn't personally like drive a too much, but i liked the other openers. HIM went on quickly and were very good. the crowd was pretty chill and the show was overall great.
