About

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it's apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how Loveletting was born".

Loveletting, the first single off VV's debut album 'Neon Noir' out in early 2023, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music's most distinctive and intriguing voices. It belongs to the same forlorn world of woe and whimsy once conceived and governed by Valo in HIM, but with the nuanced notes of a fine aged Cabernet.

"Artistically speaking the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It's the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn't want to witness that?"

Throughout their career, VV has drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like Theatre of Living Arts, the Depot and Summit to capacity.

  • HIM Live = Disappointment

by LindeFan on 4/24/10House of Blues San Diego - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

I am a huge HIM fan. So much so, that i've actually bought their CDs. This is a true testament to how much I enjoy their music. Imagine my excitement at being able to see them live? Boy, was I in for a shocker. It was a horrible performance. When I go to see a band, I go to enjoy a performance. What Ville did was putz around onstage, stopping in the middle of songs to ignore the crowd and spout gibberish nonsense. I was not entertained by Ville in the least. He came across as someone singing a HIM song in a Karaoke lounge. Now, I'm not saying the whole band was horrid, it was that Ville did not deliver. I felt like he was drunk or high or both? I did come out of this a Linde fan, though. Wowzers!! That boy can play!!! And I am utterly impressed by Linde. It was mesmerizing watching him onstage. Too bad he was let down by the "leader" of the band (shame on you, Ville). Another solid point was the 2nd band to play, Dommin. I have to say, they were my favorite and I thought they outshone HIM in their performance by a landslide. I had not heard of them before, so this was my first time seeing them as well. They did an amazing job!! All in all, I doubt I will ever pay money to go see HIM play live, especially if they are headlining. I hope Ville get's his act together and learns to put on a better performance. We all like to be entertained. I doubt anyone wants to feel like they are paying to watch a karaoke version of the actual band. But that's what this felt like with Ville hanging around onstage like a limp noodle.

  • HIM was a bomb but the other bands ROCKED!

by RNMama on 4/23/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Ville Vallo sang poorly and if it wasn't for the band's great lead guitar, I may have walked out. The openning acts were incredible. I was particularly impressed with Dommin, and Drive A was pretty good for a young punk band. It reminded me of the early Ramones and Sex Pistols but better.

  • Great Show

by Hiosta on 4/23/10House of Blues San Diego - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

I probably would have like the show more if I had been more of a HIM fan. The music was boring lacked energy giving a blain performance. If it hadn't been from the awesome energy displayed by the Bassist HIM's show would have had no steam. Most of the band members of HIM performed as though constrained to square block barely moving. Then you have Dommin and We are the Fallen. Dommin is a phenominal bacd that sounds as though they were pulled from the early 90's. Their music reminds me of a darker upbeat Breaking Benjamin with a hidden goth undertone. They totally Blew me away b/c the only song I had ever heard by them was "your heart, my hand" and they struck me b/c every song could be a hit. Next you have "We are tyhe fallen" They sound a lot like Evanesence b/c it kind of is with a different lead singer. Yeah the band from Evansenece has teamed up with Carly Smithson to form this mind bodling group. Over all wonderfull show. HIM might have just set the bar too high with the opening acts giving us a hint of great music to come~!

  • HIM was outshined! We Are The Fallen ROCKS!

by Anonymous on 4/23/10House of Blues San Diego - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

Drive A is an upstart band and did a good job! Dommin was very good excellent musicality with a heavy organ sound and good guitar work. Next up was We Are The Fallen, with their Evanescence influences this was by far the best band of the night! Carly Smithson has an amazing voice and their sound was amazing! HIM .......well we didn't stay for all of it.....not impressed :(

  • Excellent

by helloerinxo on 4/22/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

I couldn't give this a 5 star rating, due to the fact Valo spent way too much time just rambling into the microphone. Other than that it was a beautiful show. Valo's vocals were better than on some of the band's albums. And the energy I was getting from Linde was just brilliant and phenomenal! His solo was beautiful. Gas was - in the best way - "uncontrollable" as Valo described at the show. Midge and Burton kicked some ass on the stage as well. I've been a fan for many years and finally getting to see them the other night was one of the best musical experiences of my life.

  • H.I.M was very impressive!

by ShayShayLaFemm on 4/22/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This was a very intimate setting with the crowd of mixed fans young and old alike! Although as intimate as it may have seemed the die hard love metal fans made an unobstructed wall in the front! All the screams from the girls throwing their hearts up to Ville Valo hoping to be noticed echoed louder then the amps!! When they began they started hard, and kept an even uplifting pace! I was very impressed with how good they are live it seemed as though I was listening to their record play! The only upheaval was when they began to play (HeartKiller) and the sound cut off! Ville and the rest of the group kept there cool which showed their professionalism, and his entertaining personality kept the crowd in check! This was defiantly a show like I had never been to before. There were breaks in between songs with talks between the band members with random topics. It really showed you and made you feel like "hay these are regular guys, just having an amazing time"! As a new H.I.M fan I would recommend anyone seeing this band they were very good to say the least!

HIM was one of the greatest shows I have ever been to!! the opening acts were really good and my favorite one was the little punk rock band called "Drive A". they were all really good at bringing up the energy for us to get ready for HIM!!!! they played all my favorites and it was overall a good show :)

  • HIM on 4/20/10

by MetallicaRocks on 4/22/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

HIM was excellent! Wish they played a bit longer though. I'm happy that they sound just as good in person as they do on an album. Great show! Thanks for coming to California!

  • H.I.M was amazing

great concert, loved it, all members of the band rocked Ville was b***ing a little about technical issues, but still, amazing performance

  • AMAZINGish..

by StphySynystrr on 4/22/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The Drive there always sucks haha; The Venue was great, We sat in the Seats since everyone was WAY taller than me. Drive A were alright, Dommin was AMAZING, and We Are The Fallen... Could do WITHOUT the Lead Singer, H.I.M. was THE BEST! We Are The Fallen's Lead Singer was barely heard. Ville Valo was either way to drunk, or just not in the mood to sing. But nonetheless the concert was great. The Best was the Jokes Ville Made about Gas and the PA system, the PA in the Venue gve out during Heartkiller, Not cool, But Ville made up for it by throwing the Mic and dancing. I Would DEFINITELY recommend this to EVERYONE! H.I.M. never Disappoints.

  • HIM was amazing!

by HeartagramGirl on 4/22/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Although admittedly I am biased (HIM is my favorite band), I thought they put on a terrific show. Ville seems to have loosened up since the past two tours and had more fun on stage than I have seen in a while. The entire band played excellently (despite frustrating PA difficulties!) and all in all, I was enchanted.

  • HIM was good.

by Typingclown on 4/21/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

The show was overall good. We Are The Fallen was the third band to perform before HIM, and the sound was so loud that it hard to hear the lead singer and she was being drounded out by the instruments. My ears were ringing afterwards which I didn't appreciate since I was there to see HIM. Dommin was very good. HIM had some PA trouble and Ville Valo seemed off his game and didn't seem to be in a good mood. He tended to ramble incoherently. His performance was good but lacked the energy I was expecting.

  • HIM & guests - VERY BAD

by RBCA on 4/21/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

The 3 intro bands took 2 1/2 hrs. The second DOMIN was good. The others were not. HIM was only on for a little over an hour and was terrible. You could not understand any words, the other instruments drowned out the vocals. You could not even understand the lead singer most of the time when he was talking, which he did too much. They had equipment problems during the performance. I really like their music, but was VERY DISAPPIONTED!

  • H.I.M. so-so, They are the Fallen steal the show

by ZapBranagen on 4/21/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Missed the first band. Dommin was not bad, a bass playing pompadour dude and roses on the mic stand should paint a picture of what they were representing. They are the Fallen were the surprise of the night. A cute girl comes out on stage wearing all black, and tats on her right arm, I'm thinking, "O.K., at least she'll look cute while playing music I'm prob. going to not like". WRONG!!! I think it was like the 2nd or 3rd song, I can hear the girl say, "I think it's time for some Maiden!" And the band proceeded to bust in to the Iron Maiden song, "The Flight of Icarus". And they made that song their own, and that girl blared out Bruce Dickinson licks like she had been doing it her whole life. Come to find out later that the band is actually former members of Evanescence, which would explain their polished sound and stage presence. The sound hampered the vocals all night, but that girl never let it bother her, which I can't say for the diva like Ville Valo of H.I.M. He stopped a couple of times through his set, and decided to entertain us by talking to us about H.P. Lovecraft and Peter Jackson......REALLY!!! I"ll be honest, I'm wasn't a fan of HIM before I came into the show, but after hearing the rambling and the 2, count em, 2 cover songs from HIM, I can safely say that I am never going to see this band live again.

  • by Anonymous on 4/21/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Excellent performance. I enjoyed the opening bands, especially Dommin. HIM was great as usual, aside from Ville's drunken exit to the bathroom halfway through Wicked Game. The music and atmosphere were awesome.

  • him at regency

by himfan666 on 4/21/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

it was a great show, get to get real close to the stage, lights awesome, sound was enormous, felt small & personal, merch and drinks easy and professional, setup was clean and really a beautiful building. if i could do it all again tonight i would.

  • Hello? They're called HIM for a reason!

by lethalxlunacy on 4/21/10The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Their set was great- covering classics from their old albums and of course Screamworks! To speak to the other bands- Drive A did their best to start up the crowd... Dommin showed a lot of love, and We Are the Fallen killed it with a booming bass and drum. Overall a fantastic hi energy show- I don't know if it was because it was 420. But I have a feeling we were all pumped to behold His Infernal Majesty.
